There are seven books in total.
I discovered this series at my local used bookstore around Christmas of 2019; they had combined the first three as a set. Little did I know that there were four more books I wasn't buying, haha.
I was blown away by the intriguing characters, the dystopian/fantasy themes, and the creative world rich with unique magic. I HIGHLY recommend the series for anyone who likes any of the above (dystopian, fantasy, magic).
I find it really surprising that my library (and perhaps many others) cataloged the series as CHILDREN'S books. Not YA, but over where the bookshelves are 33% shorter and there are cute stools and stuff.
So, if you've never heard of this gem before, now you have!

My recommendation for anyone who likes historical fiction or a book that teaches you something you never knew before is Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys (or really any book by her, but this one's my favorite).
Ive already mentioned this a bunch of times on this group, but im doing it again bc its that good. Its about a group of people, each with their own inner struggles, who are trying to escape from Germany during ww2. Its an absolutely amazing book that taught me about a major part of history that i had somehow never learned or even heard of before. I love metaphors and poetic writing in a book, and this one has that and so much more. This is my favorite book of all time!❤️😭

Btw I really recommend Without Choice by Elizabeth Andrews. If any want a good mafia book to start out. It’s pretty new but interesting.

Tokyo Underworld and Tokyo Vice are both awesome accounts of the Yakuza in Japan.

Here's one if you like Murakamai, but also with a bit of Kerouac or Hunter S. vibe added

A delightfully debauched, spiritual quest through a hallucinatory Japan of cursed gaijin houses, seedy hostess bars, a Beatles-themed McDonalds, mysterious internet cafe denizens, and one seriously pissed off cat.
Rainy Day Ramen and the Cosmic Pachinko is told as a uniquely clever mix of Murakami-esque magical realism and gonzo Japan travelogue.
