Book recommended by someone older than you

I'm interpreting that to be a book recommended directly to me, but if you want to take a broader view and pull something off of a best-of list or whatever, go for it. My mom has recommended Ivanhoe, and my husband has recommended The City in the Middle of the Night, so those are just two of my contenders.

I had mentally written this prompt off, but I just got a book from my sister-in-law, so I will likely count that one.

I finally got around to reading Ύπνος: Εννέα ζωγραφιές και ένα διήγημα, which was a gift from one of my Greek BookCrossing friends. (He's not *much* older than me, but it still counts.) It is a bilingual edition (English title: Hypnos) with a concertina binding, and I had looked through the paintings on one side but not actually sat down and read the story on the other side. This is a super-neat volume and one I hope to re-visit regularly.
