If you are interested in particular cities of India, I would recommend Banaras - The city of light by Diana L. Eck. This book gives a historical as well as the religious perspective of the great Kashi.

thanks for bringing this up Preeti. After you pointed it out, realised we don't have many non-fiction Indian books recommended here.

I will try to create a non-fiction Indian recommendation list.

I just finished a book set in Mizoram and I know that it is not easy to find books set in this state and about Mizo history and people, so I will share it here in case someone else is interested.
