null 1981 or 1982 paperback horror book about a man who kills all of his family including possibly a female child. The cover was black and may have had a haunted house and a rooster on the cover. It would have been mainstream enough to have been sold at drugstore checkout counters because that is where I remember buying it. (It was NOT the Amityville Horror).

Musher, can you tell us more about the man - e.g., his job, why he killed his family (insane, possessed by evil spirit)?

Is this a horror fantasy novel?

I added some details to the header/topic title. You can update it by clicking the small "edit" link after the header. This only works on the full Desktop website - not the Mobile website or app. (On the Mobile website, click the "Desktop version" link at the bottom of the page.)

null It was straight horror, not fantasy. I do not recall the reason for sure that he killed the family but I believe it may have been Satanic or evil spirit or the house. Since I read it 40 years ago it’s very foggy. I seem to remember the rooster quite vividly on the cover but it’s possible it was another animal or bird. I have looked at as many lists and blogs that I could find before posting here.

null The rooster would have possibly been in the window of the house. It was a small detail of the cover.

null It was not The Amityville Horror :) The man in the book I am trying to remember killed his wife and daughter I think, and it was quite gruesome or so it seemed when I read it.
