I'm surprised, but at the same time not really, that this is not really a YA or at least it doesn't feel like YA for me. It's more for younger... young adults 😅 I guess I'll see how that goes because last month I read something that was giving me the same vibes and it was okay, but I wasn't much impressed with it.
So what are your thoughts on Shoshanna and her telling everyone in the store that Jake doesn't like books?
For me it was a bit too much. I understand that she's a book lover and that she's working at place she loves, but it was judgy how she acted because he's not a reader. I mean okay, he's not a reader and maybe the bookstore job would've fit much better for someone else, BUT people need jobs nevertheless, and a lot of people are working jobs they don't love so... On the other hand Jake was acting like a jerk.
Not getting her coffee the way she likes, but getting himself the perfect cup was a douche move, but her response to it - throwing the coffee - was so childish. And here was I thinking they are semi starting to have a normal coworker relationship.
Oh-oh, I kinda have a bad feeling about the video. I mean it can be nothing, but...

I agree about the YA but not quite YA voice, feels kinda basic and watered down.
I'm not the biggest fan of Shoshanna at all if I'm honest. What's going on at home is hard and her money worries are more than understandable but I do feel like she's acting like a child a lot younger than she is. But then she goes very heavy in on sexualising Jake from the minute she sees him which is making me a bit uncomfortable with the constant and repeated description of him.
She shouldn't of announced it cause come on - it's a job at the end of the day. Yeah loving books makes the job easier but I wouldn't say its like number 1 concern especially as he obviously interviewed and got it in the first place and there'll be a reason for that. Taking his sale was a dick move (even if he started it) but the coffee one made me laugh a little.
Yeah I really think this video is gonna bite them in the ass somehow/in some way.
Oh, I hope everything turns out good.
I read today's set of chapters, and they went by fast.
I agree with the home and money problems, it's understandable but she's acting childish. The Jake thoughts.. made me a bit uncomfortable, especially because I don't feel like this is classic ya as we said.
Her having a surprise for her moms was cute, but it backfired..
And the moment she decided to upload the friends video I knew that's where shit is going to happen... and I was right. It was with good intentions but it wasn't thought through.

Yep still feeling very uncomfortable about the Jake thing. Glad they've calmed down and actually started getting along now though.
She seems to of grown up a little in the middle of today's chapters - I'd say about the time the books fell. Then again I realised she's only 16 and I think everyone cringes at stuff they did in that mid-teen phase. So for her age the characters okay, still not majorly likeable but it comes back to this feeling like younger YA rather than the upper end of it due to her age.
We both knew something was going to be wrong with the video thing but I did not predict it going that way! Thought they'd get busted or something honestly. I agree, well intentioned but definitely not thought through at all and a big mistake.
True about cringing about past stuff, I guess I've gotten used to other contemporaries with characters that are more mature.
Yes, I thought the guy's boss will catch them, and then he'll lose his job.

Is it just me or that apology was.. weak? I mean I'm glad she's back on good terms with her friends but.. too easy.
The Jake thoughts make me uncomfortable. Especially her imagination when he asked her if she needed a lift to see the mirror. If this was any other ya contemporary I think I would've been okay with it but here.. no.
I like that Shoshanna has these amazing ideas how to get more customers. I think that's the thing I like most about her, other wise she doesn't really stand out to me.
I'm stopping in the middle of chapter 13 for now, but I'll finish it later and post my thoughts.

Her creativity is a plus for me also - the elf ears and face painting were so cute but as a librarian I cringe at the idea of kids with glitter and face paint running around a bookstore because yikes that could end badly for the books!
I agree with your first paragraph.
And the glitter must be horror around books
I finished the book. By the end it was cute. They got to know each other a bit more, but I'm not wowed by the book. One good thing is I was feeling slumpish, and still do, but this was made me a bit less that way, probably because it was an easy read.

Personally I think the last three chapters and the epilogue were much better than the rest of the book. Shoshanna became a bit more tolerable and thought things through a lot more. Couldn't help cringe when she went snooping in his room but it lead to a cute scene between them.
Overall a nice read but not a favourite for me.
It definitely got better at the end. Oh, yeah that scene 😬😬 I skimmed over it because I saw she got caught and I felt embarrassment for her. She's bad with boundaries.
