Books about: protagonist having to stand up for others - prefer (adult) fantasy

I'm looking for a (preferably adult) fantasy book about a protagonist who has to stand up for others and win (back) their trust in order to defeat the antagonist. They shouldn't accomplish this immediately in the first few chapters but should rather have to struggle a bit.
And it's not important who those others are but they should be a broader group of people.
