I read Past Life by David Mark It is a dark, gritty mystery with several murders and some graphic violence. Definitely not a cozy mystery. It is set in Hull, Yorkshire, England. My 4 star review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Stephen McCarthy | 54 comments i just read The Flag by Robert Shaw. An old book but a 4 star read. Religion and politics in rural Suffolk between the wars. enjoyed it.
Didnt know the author also played Quint in Jaws.

Lissa Oliver | 113 comments I hadn't heard of it, Stephen, many thanks. Although I've currently ditched reading for writing and managing to complete around 1,000 words a day on my next novel! The Flag is on my list, though.

message 110: by Stephen (new)

Stephen McCarthy | 54 comments You're welcome Lissa. I am also getting through about 1000 words a day on my latest novel. I find the reading helps to clear my mind every few days.

Lissa Oliver | 113 comments My goodness, Stephen, well done! I just can't manage my time for both. What are you working on, if it's OK to ask?

message 112: by Stephen (new)

Stephen McCarthy | 54 comments No worries, thanks for asking. I am trying my hand at a thriller.
It is set in an alternative present where Communism won the Cold War. The US has splintered due to a second Civil War and the world is governed by a continental council...and there is a serial killer on the loose.
It has been fun to write so far as my previous novels were character-driven Irish tinged stories. Hoping to have this one done by Christmas and maybe for sale on Amazon with my other books in the New year.

All the best on this merry adventure.
S

Lissa Oliver | 113 comments Wow, it sounds very original and enjoyable. I look forward to that in the New Year. I always find writing a book much like reading one, as you are engaging with characters and never quite sure what's coming next. You've a lot to be having fun with there and I like that you have a unique world to take control of. Happy plotting!

I read Tin Badges by Lorenzo Carcaterra
It is a well done thriller with some unrealistic police procedures. My 3.5 star rating rounded down https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Colleen Chi-Girl (colleenchi-girlakacolleensnapped) | 32 comments I’m finishing up a book set in the late 1930’s through WWII set in France and England, fighting and subterfuge toward the Nazis. Probably 3.5 or 4 🌟 for some silly language and over dramatizing of the gutsy, sexy, brilliant woman spy Nancy.

I read The Violin Conspiracy by Brendan Slocumb
It is as much a mystery as a commentary upon challenges faced by black classical musicians. I enjoyed it and rated it 4 stars. My review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I read My Heart Went Walking by Sally Hanan I enjoyed and rated it 3.5 stars rounded up. It is the story of an unmarried teenager in rural 1983 Ireland who refuses to give up her baby for adoption. Not a mystery, but literary fiction.
The author was born in Dublin, but now lives in Texas after winning a green card lottery.

Stephen McCarthy | 54 comments Morning,

In honour of my saint's day I have decided to put my three books on Amazon for free in kindle format.

Nobody's Hero
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...
Battered
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...
Searching for Ahimsa
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...

The Kindle Editions are free for 5 days from today so if you have a spare moment and fancy reading books with an Irish flavour then they are there.

Luckily I don't need money from my writing because as you can see I am terrible at marketing.

All the best on this merry adventure and Happy St.Stephen's Day.

Stephen
