Abraham Dias

What a sweet old man he turned out to be. I cried when he died. Like a teeny weeny which is a lot for me.

I was touched by his back story and the relationship he developed with Maria as she took care of him. Their conversations reminded me of the ones I have with my aging father.... and other old family members.

I also love Keeper, the wolf. I need a wolf. That'd be a great guard dog. In the last book I read, Valley of the Horses by Jean M. Auel, the main character she also picked up an abandoned predatory baby animal and it became her protector....Sabertooth tiger. I just looked up which predators I am most likely to come across in my area... raccoon, red fox or coyote. Hmmm....my cat won't like this.

Note to self: Find red boots at the thrift store

Red boots! I love the visuals in this book. I love that everywhere Maria ends up (and now Faith) women in the community come to them for cures, spells, etc. and how almost all of what they are actually doing is herbal medicine.

I'm a sucker for anything set in the very early days of NYC, too. Hoffman is very descriptive in her descriptions of past-Brooklyn.

Prediction at this point: Faith will be the one to break the curse and bring Samuel and Maria together! (I maintain that I may be completely wrong...)
