Monster Mash Ch3
"Lisa, Tammy have you thought of what you wanna be for Halloween? It's tonight! I can't decide. Mom made a costume for me, but I don't know..." Carrie starts to shrug her shoulders in despair, but Tammy interrupts with a roll of her eyes, "No one does that here. We just put some stuff together and have fun.”

Lisa nods her head in agreement. "Let's go to our houses and look for some stuff.” Tammy quickly adds, “Carrie come back here after dinner.”

The girls sit in Tammy's living room going through the endless shirts, belts, jackets, hats, and costume jewelry piled into a high mound. There was even an old moth eaten fox stole desperately trying to grab its tail to complete the endless circle of life. The pile is overflowing and looks like an eccentric pirate booty waiting to be dispersed by the conqueror. The three girls squeal with delight. Light bounced off the costume jewelry creating even more chaos among the odds and ends that they have discovered through the day.

"Do you think we have enough to make something?" asks Carrie with a wrinkled nose.

Lisa grabs an antique dinner glove and crams her hand in it and asks why would someone wear a glove that goes up to your elbow and how impractical it was for everyday use.

Carrie laughs. "It is what people use to wear when going out to dinner or for parties.”

"How do you eat then if you are wearing gloves all night?" Carrie gently shows Lisa how there is a small hole to pull the glove back over the hand or tuck it out of the way while you ate if you had that type of glove. Lisa turns bright pink from embarrassment.

Miss Dottie peeks her head inside the room and asks the girls if they have decided on anything. All three shake their heads no.“Well, I have a few ideas, what if the three of you went as pirates, witches or a monster? You have enough clothes, all three of you could be something different.”

“Mom, what if we went as a three headed monster pirate?” Miss Dottie’s eyes crinkle up in silent laughter and slowly looks around the pile of junk.“Hmmmm, that could work, let’s see what we can do to put it together.”

Finally! The masterpiece. Their creation will make any museum proud. Carrie, being the tallest is in the middle and the two shorter girls are on either end. Carrie has covered her face in green face paint and draws a red line down her left eye to make it look like she is crying bloody tears. Her hair is pulled up into a wild high ponytail that was wrapped in a multicolored gyspsy scarf.
Lisa has the fox stole wrapped around her neck like a choker and one white dinner glove on her left arm. Her hair has been teased to an inch of its life and the Amazon rainforest is in danger from all the Aquanet that has been sprayed to keep it in place.
Tammy, on the right wore the other matching dinner glove with a gold bangle that was set with large glitter rhinestones that shone like stars in the moon beams. Tammy placed one of Carrie’s fancy hats on her head at an angle and the veil dropped from one corner of the hat.
“Mom how do we look? Are we weird enough? Could we pass as a three headed pirate?”
Miss Dottie ties them together with a belt that is hidden under a large leather overcoat and tucks a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
“I think we can call you the weird sisters, not a monster or a pirate because the three of you are just too weird looking.” She snaps a picture with the Nikon camera of the weird sisters. A snapshot of time caught forever.

The October air is crisp with a moon that hangs low in the sky. Clouds reach across the moon like a well worn blanket. The girls are whooping and hollering. Boys from one of their classes head toward Tammy, Lisa and Carrie, “Hey! Great costume.” One boy makes a silly face, “The green face is super cool.” The girls giggle from the attention and continue to head to Tammy’s house.

They have finally reached their destination. Tammy’s house. Tammy’s dad always went above and beyond during Halloween. All Hallow’s Eve was his favorite night of the year. The girls heard whispers at other houses about what her Dad was doing that night, but they wanted her house to be the last house for the night.
The girls pass another group of kids screaming, “Wow! I can’t wait for next year!” and “This is the best Halloween!” “Tammy, your dad is crazy!”

Tammy’s house sits on a bluff near the lake. Boulders line the walkway up to the house. Honeysuckle snakes through the boulders leaving hidey holes for critters to nestle. Old railroad ties are placed on one side of the bluff and blackberry bushes have been planted so they could make blackberry jam at the end of the season. The trees that were left after building the house are large oak trees. Gnarly and bent little old men with arthritis with a few wild mulberry trees peeking out among the oaks like tufts of ear hair. The house wasn’t the largest but it was imposing. There were not any windows facing the street that could be seen, just a massive front courtyard with an iron gate. You go through the gate before you see the front door. Walking into the courtyard and looking immediately to your left you might have missed a single octagonal shape window. It is the only window on the front of the house.

Tammy, Lisa and Carrie walk through the gate to the front door and notice that the wrought iron fence is adorn with blinking pumpkin heads on the top pikes. The single tree in the courtyard is covered in a tattered white sheet that moves on invisible air. Carrie reaches for the doorbell and the old Spanish Mission door swings open and an old crone’s hand reaches out to hand Carrie a treat. Directly behind the old witch is a stone fireplace that has candles dripping down towards the ground.
Suddenly, the trio hears a screech and a lit pumpkin flies past their heads. Lisa does an abrupt turn and sees a figure riding a horse that is at least 20 hands high. The man is missing his head.
The soldier waves an antique military sword yelling. “I need a head! Where is my head? I will take your head!”
The girls careen against the locked side of the gate pushing and pulling to leave the hell that has them trapped at that very moment. While the girls panic, horse and rider spin around and gallop towards the trees and disappear into the inky night.

“Wow, Tammy! This is the best Halloween ever!” screamed Lisa and Carrie.

Tammy, Carrie and Lisa finally break free from the gate and run like a wild dog chasing them. Screaming and laughing the entire way to the truck. The girls pile into the back of the pick up truck and end the night of trick or treating. It is a fun filled night with memories that are captured by one camera hidden from a distance.
