Pe (pagevingthuit) | 3 comments While I'm an avid reader, being a teacher and a student at the same time leaves me very little time for reading 'for fun'. This year I hope to be more mindful of carving out a few minutes for that every day and read 24 books in all - 2 books a month!

[01/24] I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou ★★★★★

I'm famously awful at writing book reviews, especially when I'm trying to talk about a book that really made me feel things, like this one. I'll just say I'm very happy I finally read it, but I'm a bit concerned about the very first book of the year already being this good, because I'm not sure the rest will measure up!

Favorite quotes:
~"She said that I must always be intolerant of ignorance but understanding of illiteracy."
~"I was liked, and what a difference it made."
~"The public library gave information on the finished lesbian--and that woefully sketchy--but on the growth of a lesbian, there was nothing."
~"The world had ended, and I was the only person who knew it."
~"She was Vivian Baxter Jackson. Hoping for the best, prepared for the worst, and unsurprised by anything in between."
