Gord | 1010 comments Here is what I have kind of planned for the month

For Sure

Oh and of course more Fairy Tail. I'm trying to read two volumes a week right now.

Ones I hoping to get from the library this month
The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse The Burning God (The Poppy War, #3) by R.F. Kuang A History of Heavy Metal by Andrew O'Neill

Things I'm either considering or want to get to if I have time

Then there is a whole lot of unplanned. Things I'll grab on a whim and what not. For instance to try to read more Western comics I've been using Hoopla and taking a look at new additions in the past seven days. I'm trying to read at least one of those a week if possible.

Elena Granger | 1790 comments I'm currently into several manga series and books.
Definitely going to finish:
Kamisama Kiss, Vol. 10 by Julietta Suzuki

Currently reading:
Arcanum Unbounded The Cosmere Collection by Brandon Sanderson - so good (all the stories are great) and so much about Kelsier from Mistborn!
Жалобная книга by Max Frei - in my native (Russian) language, pretty interesting magical realism with Moscow setting but I don't know if it's translated into English
Beard with Me (Winston Brothers, #6) by Penny Reid - one more great romance by one of my favourite romance authors
Tower of Dawn (Throne of Glass, #6) by Sarah J. Maas - in started slow but I hope it's going to be better soon
The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1) by Rick Riordan - still reading and really enjoying this one

Some plans:
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas The Hating Game by Sally Thorne The Frozen Lake by Elizabeth Edmondson
The last one is with WWII setting (which I don't read) but I really love the author and hope there will be not much about actual war. Anyways I can always drop it.

Jo Elliott | 1839 comments I'm still feeling kind of slumpy but these are what I want to finish:
The Unbound (The Archived, #2) by Victoria Schwab
Scarlet (Scarlet, #1) by A.C. Gaughen
Olive, Mabel and Me Life and Adventures with Two Very Good Dogs by Andrew Cotter

Elena I loved Tower of Dawn so I hope you do too. I really need to read Arcanum Unbounded

Jo, hope you get out of your slump soon. How is Scarlet going?

Christine, are those books you are reading? Have read? Just random books? You can put more than one in a post if you wanted to.

Gord, looks like a manga month! Enjoy!

nightlyreadingheather (heatherhy01) I am currently trying to challenge myself to complete as many unfinished series as I can in April, May & June.

Currently reading A Matter of Truth (Fate, #3) by Heather Lyons

I'm not on Scarlet yet, still reading The Unbound! Hoping to be able to start Scarlet before the end of the month.

Gord | 1010 comments I bought Bofuri I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense., Vol. 1 (light novel) by Jirou Oimoto this morning and I can't wait to get to it. I've been wanting to read the source material ever since I watched the anime last year. I'll get to it this weekend after I'm done my current book.

Katie Bokan (katiebokan) I'm reading The Bone Witch and really enjoying it so far!

message 327: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1790 comments I finished and started several books though had not much time to read this week as I had to work on weekend.

Finished:
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern the writing style is great but the story is plain. The book overall is overhyped.

Beard with Me (Winston Brothers, #6) by Penny Reid one more amazing romance. When I finish the series, I know I'm going to miss those heartfelt stories.

Started:
The Girl in the Tower (The Winternight Trilogy, #2) by Katherine Arden whoa! Great book with amazing descriptive language. You can feel how cold the story is!

message 328: by Brittany (new)

Elena, I love how our opinions on books vary. I thought Girl in the Tower was beautifully written but I was bored for a lot of it. I do agree you can feel the cold!

Gord | 1010 comments Salvation in Death (In Death, #27) by J.D. Robb -5 Stars
This was a slow read but an enjoyable one. This one here felt like it was more of a cold case mystery then an active murder mystery. It was still an active murder mystery as someone gets killed in the first chapter but after that it was all about things in the past. Who this person was, what they had done, how they got to where they were, what they were doing there, etc. As a result it was a lot more talking and research then one of the books about, say, a serial killer who is actively hunting. The section in the middle with the second murder kind of felt forced a bit but meh, I still had fun reading it.

Owlflight (Owl Mage Trilogy, #1) by Mercedes Lackey -3 Star
This was the book that took up most my week. Like a lot of Lackey books it's not bad but it moves at a glacial pace with only a couple of scenes where things pick up a bit. I have to say that it was nice to have a much more focused novel compared to the last few I've read but that being said there was some weirdness with this book. The first involves the MC. The first part of the book basically shows the reader how flawed the MC is and how he got that way. Great, you establish the MC and his characteristics. In the next section it felt like Lackey then pulls out the psychology textbook and breaks down exactly how the MC got to be like he was and what needed to be done to "fix" him. It just felt weird and hyper focused on this thing. The other thing was the constant mini flashbacks in the book if you can even call them flashbacks. You read a scene involving person A and B from the perspective of person A. The very next scene in the book is the last section of the last scene but this time from the perspective of person B. To the point where entire lines of dialogue were copied on the same page. I understand that maybe the author wanted us to understand what both characters are thinking during that moment but this just feels redundant. It takes an already slow moving novel and just makes it even slower. It's not a bad premise and I'm interested to see where things go but the weird little Lackey things in these books is getting to me I think.

Bofuri I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense (Bofuri I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense, #1) by Jirou Oimoto -4 Stars
I've been eagerly waiting for this novel since I watched the anime last year. To me this is in the same vein as Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear and Killing Slimes for 300 Years. Cute girls doing cute things in a fantasy setting and the MC is beyond stupidly OP. It's pure fluff and I love reading novels like this. This one is basically a brand new player logs into a VRMMO game and creates the most broken character in the history of the game. She dumps all her stats into defense, takes a great shield, and basically becomes a walking fortress that no one can hurt. Or at least until they nerf the game a bit and she then stumbles across new ways to break the game. It's just a cute and fluffy read and exactly what I needed after this week.

Otherworldly Izakaya Nobu Volume 1 by Natsuya Semikawa Otherworldly Izakaya Nobu Volume 2 by Natsuya Semikawa
Another niche corner of the manga/light novel world that I enjoy. The slice of life in a fantasy world where the central theme is food. This one revolves around an izakaya (basically a bar) set in our world but opens into a medieval setting. Various members of the local time come in at the end of the day for a drink and some food with each chapter centered around a particular character and a particular dish. This one doesn't seem to have the more fantastical elements of a fantasy novel (dwarfs/elves/etc) but instead focuses on regular people. Just a chill and relaxed read with some really tasty looking food.

With things slowing down at work I should be able to get to some more reading over the next week.

For comics/manga I'm currently revisiting my childhood with some Asterix and Obelix. I also plan to read another couple volumes of Fairy Tail as I never got a chance this week. This afternoon I also plan to start a new manga series called Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle.

As for novels I'm hoping to read Mattimeo (Redwall, #3) by Brian Jacques and The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse

I read Magus of the Library, Vol. 1 by Mitsu Izumi and Cosmoknights (Cosmoknights, #1) by Hannah Templer today both were really good. I am sad there aren't more Cosmoknights out!
I also tried to read Goddess Mode, Vol. 1 by Zoe Quinn and had to dnf it. Such a mess of a graphic novel, didnt work for me at all.

Jo Elliott | 1839 comments Have finished Olive, Mabel and Me Life and Adventures with Two Very Good Dogs by Andrew Cotter , non-fiction is not my usual genre, but I really enjoyed it, especially as I listened to the audiobook and Andrew Cotter narrated it himself. Plus I love labradors and listening to him talk about Olive and Mabel reminded me of a lot of happy memories of my own dog.

Jo Elliott | 1839 comments Started my next audiobook, The Rose Code by Kate Quinn , can already tell I'm going to love this narrator!

message 339: by Marlow (new)

Marlow (waywardsprong) I just read I Wish You All the Best (I Wish You All the Best, #1) by Mason Deaver , and I don't think I've ever been this touched by a book before. I must've almost started crying in the middle of school at least six times. I really think that this is one of those books that everyone should read because... wow.

Elena Granger | 1790 comments I'm so glad you're enjoying your reads so far!

Beard Necessities (Winston Brothers, #7) by Penny Reid A Beardy Bonus Bonus and deleted scenes from the Winston Brothers Series by Penny Reid I just finished the romance series (which usually not my genre) and really enjoyed it! Penny's romantic stories are so warm, cozy and heartfelt.

The Girl in the Tower (The Winternight Trilogy, #2) by Katherine Arden Oh my! It's been a while since I've read the first book in the series and so happy to be back into this amazing cold world with all the Russian dark myths and magic. So atmospheric, cold, mysterious. Just loved it!

Elena Granger | 1790 comments Here are some of my finished / current reads. It's been a great week!
The Silence of Bones by June Hur - one more book with lots of Korean culture. Joseon period in particular (1800s). It was a nice read, I'm so glad that nowadays there are much more books about this interesting country and culture.

The Winter of the Witch (Winternight Trilogy, #3) by Katherine Arden - almost finished the last book in the series. Though the season featured in this one is summer it still has the cold dark mysterious atmosphere. I love the series! Every book was very good and interesting!

Tower of Dawn (Throne of Glass, #6) by Sarah J. Maas I'm still reading this one. Though I craved more Rowan-Aelin line I found myself enjoying reading the Chaol-Nesryn line too. (view spoiler)

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas I'm a little bit on and off with this book because of lack of time, not interest. It's definitely interesting but I still have some books to finish before diving into this one for real.
