I finished White Hot Kiss (The Dark Elements, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout a couple days ago
Next up on ebook is Network Effect (The Murderbot Diaries, #5) by Martha Wells

Elena Granger | 1788 comments @Brittany yeah! I finished chapter 5 yesterday. But I can wait and read another book. I've just started a bunch of books.

Read Firefly Lane (Firefly Lane, #1) by Kristin Hannah and it was amazing! So emotional and the friendship theme... I love it! It was a spontaneous read and I decided not to wait and go straight to the next book in the series which is Fly Away (Firefly Lane, #2) by Kristin Hannah .

Started Endless Magic (Star-Crossed, #4) by Rachel Higginson I like the series but it was up and down for me. Not all the books were good. Let's see how this one is going to be.

I always hear such good things about Kristin Hannah's books glad you loved it!
Sounds good! Once I actually sit down to read it Ill get through Murderbot pretty quickly I'm sure.

Will let you know once I'm done! I've heard mixed things, but I'm excited anyway because it sounded so up my street.

Gord | 1009 comments I'm about half way into The Dragon Republic (The Poppy War, #2) by R.F. Kuang and I'm loving it currently. The MC is a fascinating character to read. I also feel that this is how to properly do a middle book. There is no middlebookitis with this one. No characters sitting idly around waiting for the last book to happen. It feels like its own story while still being part of the overarching story of the trilogy.

Jo Elliott | 1839 comments Switching out Where Dreams Descend (Kingdom of Cards, #1) by Janella Angeles for The Unbound (The Archived, #2) by Victoria Schwab , I'm feeling so slumpy and I'm not really in the mood for another dense, descriptive read after The Silvered Serpents, so I thought I'd change things up a bit and hopefully try to break this stupid slump! I really want to enjoy Where Dreams Descend and I feel like my mood right now would definitely affect my enjoyment so I'd like to come back to it when I'm feeling less slumpy!

Gord | 1009 comments I finished up The Dragon Republic (The Poppy War, #2) by R.F. Kuang today and. just, wow. I love this series so much. In my opinion this is how you properly do a middle book of a trilogy. It's a continuation of the story from the first book with it's own story line all while setting up things for the final book. I love the main character and how absolutely flawed she is.

I think the only criticism I'd have of this book, and this is on my own expectations, was just how hard it hit. Before reading this book I was seeing a lot of comments about how much darker and intense this book was compared to the first book and I just don't see it. There are definitely brutal moments in this book but for me it never reached moments like it did in the first. There were moments in the first that left me straight horrified. That made me set the book down for a minute or two and just go "damn".

Today I plan to finish off Strange Planet (Strange Planet #1) by Nathan W. Pyle and Vampirella Archives Volume One by Bill Parente before moving on to Storm Breaking (Mage Storms, #3) by Mercedes Lackey

Elena Granger | 1788 comments @Gord I'm glad you've enjoyed the Poppy War series. I've read the first book in January and was in love with it!

Just finished Endless Magic (Star-Crossed, #4) by Rachel Higginson and ok... let me calm down a bit, it was the worst book I've ever read. I was a bit emotional writing the review. But here is the link in case you wonder why.

Elena Granger | 1788 comments Finished The Reluctant King (Star-Crossed, #5) by Rachel Higginson and it was horrible. Though I'm going to finish the series as I want to know how it's going to end (the idea is great, just the later books in the series are meh).

Finally got to reading The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1) by Rick Riordan and Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia . Both books are great and very captivating. The second one is my first book with the Mexican myth theme and I love it!

Elena, why are you still suffering through terrible books, I get wanting to know the end but yuck.
Yay for Percy though!

nightlyreadingheather (heatherhy01) I just finished Prey (Blackwater Pack #2) by Hannah McBride ! So good if you like shifter wolves! I am obsessed with this series and cannot wait for the next book!

Just started a book in the adult genre today Anyone But Rich (Anyone But..., #1) by Penelope Bloom for some reason, I am needing a romance fix?

message 223: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1788 comments @Brittany (I might sound a little bit angry but actually I'm not). It's just because the main idea is very interesting, but the romance thing makes the series a disaster (it's so unreal and full of repetitive descriptions, there is nothing wrong about being beautiful and gorgeous but when the man who thought he never gets to love a girl sees a girl and is startled by her beautiful long legs, but at the same time he out of nowhere discovers that she is so kind, caring, generous, also when he is a meat eater and never understood vegetarians again out of nowhere comes to try all the veg food... sorry, I don't believe it). I loved the first couple of books as there was not so much of it and more to the actual story (all the magic and immortals, the India line with all the plotting against the king and saving the people...). I got carried away here :D So I just decided to skip all the romance and go straight to the story parts.
Aaaand Percy somehow balances out this creepy romance thing.

Finished Jinx (Bigtime, #3) by Jennifer Estep and it was not great. The romance in this series is just... infuriating. I hate instalove 😒 However, I started Instant Karma by Marissa Meyer ... I'm only about 30 pages in but I already love it! Which is surprising on one hand because it's contemporary-adjacent. On the other hand I loved The Lunar Chronicles so there's a good chance I'm gonna enjoy this one too. Lol.

message 226: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1788 comments @Lili Indeed it is :D It wasn't so popular where I lived when I was a child. I also totally get you. I'm currently reading the series with bad romantic line. I don't hate instalove if it's properly done but in most of the stories it's done pretty bad.

message 227: by Gord (new)

Gord | 1009 comments I'm finally done Storm Breaking (Mage Storms, #3) by Mercedes Lackey and wow do I have some conflicted feelings about it. On one hand it's not a bad book, it's got some interesting character moments, but overall it was a very frustrating book. A whole lot of talking and not a lot of doing is the shortest and easiest way to explain it.

Now it's time to start my 100th book of the year.

message 229: by Gord (new)

Gord | 1009 comments Time for my weekly update. Let me know if anyone has any issues with this longer format I normally use and I'll trim it down.

Storm Breaking (Mage Storms, #3) by Mercedes Lackey -3 Stars
Boy oh boy do I have things to say about this book. So this book was the big finale of the Mage Storms trilogy, the story arc that started with the Arrows trilogy, and just the main Valdemar story line. I was already a bit conflicted heading into this book. Part of me was expecting this massive finale that would wrap up all these story lines with big reveals and what not. Another part of me was dreading that it would be another slow paced, meandering book, like the last few books I've read. I haven't been a big fan of the Mage Storms trilogy or the Mage Winds trilogy because of that. After finishing the book I can say that my dread was pretty much on the nose. I love the Valdemar series and I think Lackey is a good author but some of her books just feel like they lack direction. Like she's not sure how to get the story from point A to Point B so she just fills the page space with words. For something like the first 10-15 percent of the book nothing happened at all. We basically established that one party would stay in place because the winter would be rough and then Elspeth recapped the trilogy for us. After that things would happen but it was surrounded by so much talking that didn't feel like it did anything. A prime example of this is the story line that takes place in the Empire with the new heir. This story line took up a good third of the book and contributed nothing to the finale of anything. Sure it was an interesting glimpse into a new country and culture in this world but it contributed nothing to the story. None of the actions in the story line affected the other two story lines that we were following. It was like a .5 book dropped into the middle of the story that we were following. Then there is the threat in the story. The story device that creates the tension within the story. In the first book we established the Empire was going to invade Valdemar and everyone needed to band together to try and stop this. Then the mage storms hit and started messing things up. By the second book the Empire was no longer a threat due to the mage storms and Valdemar had shielded/delayed the storms. Most of this book felt like the threat was this vague presence lurking somewhere off page and that people were doing things to prevent things from happening...maybe. This leads us to the finale itself and for me it just felt underwhelming. The storm comes, things happen, insert expected emotional moments, characters ride into the sunset probably never to be seen again. Whoooooooo. I just wanted so much more than what I got. Now there are revelations in this book that were pretty cool and I would love to know more about such us what was going on with Iftel. I would also love to know what happens with the world after the end. It made it sound like a lot things had changed and left it at that. What changed? How did it change? How are people dealing with things? I don't regret reading the book but I am glad to be done with it.

Fury's Goddess (Rogue Angel, #35) by Alex Archer -3 Stars
After a year of waiting I finally get to return to my favorite pulp series. This was exactly what I expected. Annja is off to India to investigate some suspicious bodies for the TV show Chasing Histories Monsters. Insert a Kali death cult, a corrupt business man, intelligence agents, terrorists and we have another entertaining action book. It was exactly what I needed after finishing Storm Breaking.

On to the comics/manga of the week.
Scooby Apocalypse, Vol. 1 by Keith Giffen -3 Stars
I'm just a wee bit of a fan of Scooby Doo and this series caught my eye. To start with this series is not the usual Scooby Gang that we know. This is alternate time line/universe Scooby Gang. The characters had the same names, shared some of the looks, had all the catch phrases, and shared some of the personality traits that we would expect. Outside of that this is an all new story with these characters basically meeting for the first time before the world goes belly up. There is enough here to hook me in and I'll keep reading. I have some gripes about the story telling and some of the art work but it's kind of minor stuff.

Secrets of Camp Whatever Vol. 1 by Chris Grine -3 Stars
For me this was like Lumberjanes lite. It had a band of female campers at this strange summer camp where strange things happen in the woods. It didn't have quite the charm or depth that Lumberjanes has but there is enough here that I enjoyed myself and I'll probably read more when it comes out.

Outside of that I also read more Shaman King and Fairy Tail and it was more of the same.

Next week I plan on tackling So I'm a Spider, So What?, Vol. 5 (light novel) by Okina Baba and Spirit Hunters by Ellen Oh

I like your long format Gord.

Also as much as I love Lackey, I can only do her books in small doses for that exact reason. Its why I wasn't able to keep going with you guys.

Gord | 1009 comments Some of her stuff I can sit there and read it back to back no problems. Then there is some of her stuff like these last two trilogies that just dragged for me.

Thanks for the thumbs up on the long format.

Elena Granger | 1788 comments Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia I finished reading this book yesterday and it was extremely good! What? Only 3.91 rating here? I was surprised to see such a low rating for such a great book. Perfect story, good writing style, a great adventure and such a good love story! But the ending is the best part here! Yeah! I'm so into this book and plan to read more books by the author.

I finished Instant Karma by Marissa Meyer and it was really cute and fun and I really enjoyed it!

So for the board game I am currently doing I rolled my die a couple times after landing on Roll Again and Go Back and so on... but long story short, I landed on the Contemporary square AGAIN! I don't know whether to laugh or cry because just... HOW? 😭 Contemporary is one of my least favorite genres, yet here I am landing on that square TWO times in a row! 😂 Granted, I really enjoyed Instant Karma, but still. This is crazy! I think the universe hates me... which is particularly hilarious after having read a book called Instant Karma 🤣

Anyway, the next contemporary I settled on is Dating Makes Perfect by Pintip Dunn . It sounds like another really fun read. I really loved Malice by Pintip Dunn , and especially the romance, so I think I will enjoy this one too. Let's just hope I don't land on Contemporary again after this cause I swear... I'm gonna lose it! 😆

That's awesome Christine!

I am currently reading Crave (Crave, #1) by Tracy Wolff . Has anyone else read this? It reminds me a little of Twilight but I am a sucker for anything supernatural! I have been sucked into this book though and do not want to put it down! I have the second one on my kindle ready to go:)

Elena Granger | 1788 comments @Lili great you've enjoyed Instant Karma (I decided to add the book to my TBR after reading your thoughts :D).

@Heather never read this book. I love the concept of Twilight but didn't like the book or movie (though the dark atmosphere was perfect). Is the book you've read better than Twilight?

I'm currently reading:
Exile (Keeper of the Lost Cities, #2) by Shannon Messenger - for now I can only tell that the first book was better.
The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1) by Rick Riordan - still love this one but I'm a little bit slow reading it.
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell - not the worst book I've read so far this year and I'm happy it's not :D somewhat about 80% into I started to enjoy reading it

I cannot say that it was better than Twilight or worse.. If you really like paranormal teen reads, then you may enjoy it. It's your typical girl goes to an academy and learns about all things supernatural, meets a swoony boy and trouble ensues.

Heather, is Crave more paranormal romance than urban fantasy? The synopsis definitely gives me Twilight vibes and just vibes of those types of books that were big back in those days. I'm not super into PNR these days, but I did love those types of books back during my Twilight phase. Lol.

Finished Dating Makes Perfect by Pintip Dunn and I enjoyed it! It was very cute and awkward, as first loves usually are. Lol. It was fun!

I also read COVID-128 (The Lunar Chronicles #4.6) by Marissa Meyer because I landed on Read a Short Story for the board game I'm doing (I'm out of the contemporary loop! YES! 😂) and I really enjoyed it it! It was so nice to revisit these characters. I missed them!

Up next, for the board game, I landed on Read a sci-fi/fantasy. It doesn't really specify what type of fantasy, so since I already read my one epic fantasy for the year, I'm gonna go with either urban fantasy or sci-fi. I just don't know what yet. Lol.

Elena Granger | 1788 comments @Heather Thank you :) I'm a little bit tired of this trope as I almost finished the horrible series with exactly that trope and written not in a good way.

@Liliana thanks :) after some solid high fantasy books which I crave now I'm definitely going to jump into more cute books.

Just finished Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell and it was not very good. Nothing special happened and the line I've been into was written pretty poor.

The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1) by Rick Riordan - I'm actually in love with this book for now! And still can't read too much as I had to finish some other books.

Exile (Keeper of the Lost Cities, #2) by Shannon Messenger - as the story twists it becomes more interesting, I like where it goes.

Dr. Strange Beard (Winston Brothers, #5) by Penny Reid - I decided to read something which should be nice as all of Penny's romances I've read were good. But honestly this one is not as good as the others.

Finished The Boyfriend by R.L. Stine . It was fine. I figured out everything that was happening as soon as I started the book, pretty much. Lol. But I liked the very last page... some very interesting character development was implied.

Up next I'm thinking maybe Japanese An Essential Guide to Japanese Language Learning by Language Learning University and The Red Scrolls of Magic (The Eldest Curses, #1) by Cassandra Clare .
