It's okay so far, the chapters are very short and it feels kind of choppy, which is a weird thing for me to say as I usually love shorter chapters, but I feel like under 10 mins is a little too short? 10-15 mins is probably the sweet spot for me. I also feel kind of taken out of it by the fact that it's set in France, but all the character accents are English? I don't know why it's bothering me because it happens all the time in films, but it's just taking me out of the story somewhat.

Ah that is too bad. And I agree too many chapters under 10 minutes is usually too short for me too

Jo Elliott | 1839 comments I find it hard to keep track of what chapter I'm on when they're so short!

Here's what I've read so far this month:

Clash of Flesh and Metal (Flesh and Metal #2) by Alicia Ellis I really enjoyed this one! I really like this sci-fi world and just the fact that the main character has this love-hate relationship with technology, especially now that she has an AI arm. The mystery was a bit predictable but I enjoyed the ride and just the mayhem with the androids! I am very excited for the conclusion of the series!

Orbital Operations (Space Janitor #0.5) by Julia Huni The Dust of Kaku (Space Janitor #2) by Julia Huni A Mess Of Gravity (Space Janitor #0.6) by Julia Huni The Trouble with Tinsel (Space Janitor #2.5) by Julia Huni Christmas On Kaku (Space Janitor, #0.7) by Julia Huni Glitter in the Stars (Space Janitor #3) by Julia Huni Bot Duct Skeleton (Space Janitor, #0.8) by Julia Huni Sweeping S'Ride (Space Janitor #4) by Julia Huni I binge read the entire Space Janitor series and all the short stories I could get my hands on! 😆 I really enjoyed it! I liked the mysteries and the banter between the characters... although I honestly could've used more of that romance 😏 It IS meant to be a clean book, but at least give me more kissing! Lol. Regardless, it was a lot of fun! And I am so glad that there is a sequel series because I just love this world! I wont be starting it immediately, but I did purchase the two books in that series so I will get back to this world soon-ish.

I just finished this book today Brittany! And I agree, it was pretty disappointing. The mystery was very intriguing, but wow was it an unsatisfying ending. I needed more of my questions answered!

Glad you are enjoying that sci fi world Lili! Awesome for a binge readable series like that. Seems like its been a good reading month for you!

Yeah the mystery itself for All These Bodies had so much potential but just didnt do it. That ending was rather awful. And Lili (view spoiler)

Elena Granger | 1788 comments I love that you all are enjoying your books!
Here is my small weekly update :)

Finished:
Get Even (Don't Get Mad, #1) by Gretchen McNeil - I'm so into school-based mysteries and loved this one too
The Box in the Woods (Truly Devious, #4) by Maureen Johnson - setting is different to the first 3 books but the characters and the vibes are the same. I loved the story and the ending was what I wanted :)
Dream Country (The Sandman, #3) by Neil Gaiman - I've read vol 1-3 in one sitting! So good and suitable for the spooky season.
Every Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children #1) by Seanan McGuire - I expected much more of this book, something mysterious and captivating but it turned out to be just creepy :( so disappointed with this book!
Kingdom of Ice and Bone (Frozen Sun Saga, #2) by Jill Criswell - on the contrary I didn't expect much of this series and ended up loving it :)
I Love You So Mochi by Sarah Kuhn - such a cute (in a unique Japanese way) romantic story, very light, happy and motivating! Loved it.

Currently reading:
The Raven Boys (The Raven Cycle, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater - decided to start the series, for now I'm about 25% into the book and honestly don't get the hype :(

Gord | 1009 comments Another week and some more books to talk about.

John Dies at the End (John Dies at the End, #1) by David Wong -4 Stars
Maybe it was just me this time but this book just didn't seem to hold up as well as I remember. Don't get me wrong I still enjoyed this book but I also noticed its flaws a bit more this time. Those moments where the story kind of dragged a bit, the more episodic nature of the story instead of a flowing narrative. It's mostly nitpicks and I really think it's just me being in a bit of a spot lately. On the whole I still loved this book though. It's crude, it's nonsensical, it's weird and I love it for that. I think most of the great memories I have of this book are actually from the second book though.

Bloom into You, Vol. 1 (Bloom Into You, #1) by Nio Nakatani Bloom into You, Vol. 2 by Nio Nakatani -3 Stars
I know that some will view me only giving this series a 3 star as heresy but bear with me. I enjoyed the story and the characters but it was just missing that spark that I have liked in other yuri series. The thing that I loved about other yuri series was that ooey gooey kind of sweet romance and this just doesn't have that. The romance in this is odd and it's just not quite sitting right with me. It's not bad or wrong but there is something about it that just doesn't sit quite right with me. I think it's the one sided power dynamic of it all. Regardless I do plan to keep reading because I do think that there is something here though.

Bartender バーテンダー Vol. 6 葉巻の煙 by Araki Joh -3 Stars
Another volume of drinks and customers

Specter Inspectors by Bowen McCurdy -4 Star
This was one of the surprise hits of the week for me. I was looking for a comic to read on Friday and was browsing through the recent releases on Hoopla when I discovered this. I saw it was from Boom!, the cover art had that recognizable style that I like, and it just seemed like something I wanted to read. This is, of course, about a crew of ghost hunters that are checking out this super haunted location. One of them gets possessed and the crew has to solve the mystery of the town before they can leave. This just landed well for me. The mystery was good, the characters were good, the sprinkling of romance was good, and that last chapter really nailed the horror element of this book. I was actually rather shocked at the horror stuff in the last bit as I just wasn't expecting it to go that far. Definitely a strong recommendation from me if you are into books like this.

Thirsty Mermaids by Kat Leyh -4 Star
Another random pick for me. I discovered this one while browsing through the libraries physical collection of comics. I knew I needed a book with mermaids for a challenge and it looked interesting enough. This book didn't initially click with me. I'm just a crotchety old man and the drunken party lifestyle in the beginning of the book just kind of put me off a bit. The characters all felt a bit abrasive to me. Overtime though I really started to warm up to this band of idiots and kind of fell in love with them. The core story of this book is about family and how family is not always normal. As I mentioned I really warmed up to things as the story went along and we learned more about the three mermaids. By the end I was grinning ear to ear and felt all happy.

As for this week I plan on reading Tales of the Peculiar by Ransom Riggs The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker Whisper Me a Love Song, Vol. 1 (Whisper Me a Love Song, #1) by Eku Takeshima Whisper Me a Love Song, Vol. 2 by Eku Takeshima

Elena sorry to hear you were disappointed with Wayward Children. I quite enjoyed that one. I liked the different worlds and everything. I did think the mystery part was easy to figure out.
I never got the hype for Raven Boys either I read the first one and didn't enjoy or continue.
Glad to hear you enjoyed Mochi though, that one is on my soon list. Overall seems like a good reading week

message 775: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1788 comments Thanks Brittany! Yeah book-wise it was a great week indeed :) Hope you also like Mochi. It might be not suitable for people who like reading books of the current season but I don't mind so I enjoyed the summer vibes it gave me :)

message 776: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments @Elena - sorry to hear you're not enjoying Raven Boys :( It is one of my absolute favorites - I fell in love with the characters and go back to them as a comfort book often! But I totally get how Maggie's writing style and the fact that there really is basically no real plot makes it not for everyone!

I finally sat down and finished A Vow So Bold and Deadly (Cursebreakers, #3) by Brigid Kemmerer and ended up quite enjoying it. I went in with really low expectations after having seen so many people were disappointed so maybe that helped me >.<

Just started No Exit by Taylor Adams but also trying to get myself to finish NOS4A2 by Joe Hill (hopefully before the year ends lol).

Oooh everyone is read some fun, spooky books. I love to see it!

Last week I read A Good Girl's Guide to Murder (A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, #1) by Holly Jackson and I LOVED it! I love the way it was told with the notes and the interviews and texts and all that. And moreover, I loved the mystery! It was really intriguing and had a lot of interesting plot twists! So naturally I started in on the sequel Good Girl, Bad Blood (A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, #2) by Holly Jackson . I'm about 25% into it and I am really enjoying this one so far as well! I can't wait to see where this mystery goes!

message 782: by Gord (new)

Gord | 1009 comments *breaks out into a happy dance* glad to hear that you liked the book.

If you are looking for spooky recommendations might I suggest The Screaming Staircase. I'm working on a reread of the first book and haven't read the rest of the series yet but it has some good spooks in it. It's about ghost hunting in England. I'll also add that the audiobook is pretty dang good. That's being said with my limited knowledge of audiobooks though.

message 783: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1788 comments @Brittany I haven't read A Good Girl's Guide to Murder too. So we may someday BR it :)

@Heather It's not like I don't like the writing style or something in particular. Don't get me wrong, if there was no hype I might even enjoy the book but the expectation was too high so I ended up DNFing for now. Maybe after some time I get back to reading it.

message 784: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments @Elena.. yeah hype can definitely end up causing books to fall short! I think negative reviews kind of do the opposite for me sometimes too - like I go into it with such low expectations that I end up enjoying it more than anticipated

Brittany wrote: "Dont really care what as long as it holds my attention. Haven't read enough spooky for spooky month"

Okay, so the first book that came to mind is Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper (Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper, #1) by J.L. Bryan . We're about 15 books in on this series at this point, but all the cases are interesting and I just love books about ghost hunting! They are pretty quick reads and they can get quite spooky.

Another book about ghosts is Sisters of Blood and Spirit (The Sisters of Blood and Spirit, #1) by Kady Cross (this one is YA). This one is really interesting because it's about twin sisters, one who is dead (a ghost), and one who is not (but hunts ghosts!). Their complex relationship is one of the things I really enjoyed about the duology, but the story itself was interesting too! The book actually gave me strong Supernatural vibes, which is one of my favorite shows Lol.

Riley Sager writes some pretty good adult mystery/thrillers... except for the one that came out this year. Don't read that one. Lol. Two of his books I really enjoyed are Home Before Dark by Riley Sager which has some haunted house vibes, and Final Girls by Riley Sager . I really liked the crazy plot twists and just the intriguing mysteries. I also really liked Lock Every Door by Riley Sager . The plot twist was insane and I did not see it coming. I feel like there were some people who weren't a fan of this plot twist, but I liked it. Lol.

And last is an adult horror comedy Tales from the Gas Station, Vol. 1 by Jack Townsend . I absolutely love this series! I know you listen to a lot of audiobooks, and I actually listened to these in audiobook form because I love the narrator! The setting is this isolated gas station in the middle of nowhere where really weird things happen. And when I say weird, I mean REAL weird. The book is just really wacky, but it's also definitely spooky... and gory. I feel like the book is definitely more character-driven, but I didn't really mind because I love the characters. Lol.

Thanks Gord! I can get Screaming Staircase on audio so I will try it out!
I actually got the first Ellie Jordan as a freebie a year ago so I will bump it up the list with how much you enjoy them Lili.
Tales from the Gas Station sounds like fun but isnt available from the library
Sisters of Blood and Spirit sounds neat so I got an ebook copy from the library.
And maybe its time I finally read Sager

Thanks for the recs!

If you'd like someone to buddy this with you Brittany, I've still got it to read, so I'd be happy to do it with you at some point! I always think mysteries are good ones to buddy read because you can talk about the plot twists!

message 793: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1839 comments Just finished Dangerous Remedy (Battalion of the Dead #1) by Kat Dunn and it was a big let down, plot was way too rushed, characters barely had time to develop and though it was a cool idea, it was poorly executed. It's a shame because the ending actually had me wanting to read the next book in the series, but I found this one such a slog that I don't really want to commit to the rest of the series. Moving onto We Were Liars by E. Lockhart as my next audiobook, my friend recommended me this one, she really loved it, so I really hope I enjoy it too!

Finished Good Girl, Bad Blood (A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, #2) by Holly Jackson today and it was SO GOOD! I really enjoyed it! It took a turn there at the end that I was not expecting, but I kinda loved it. Lol. And Jo, you are so right! Mysteries are good for buddy reading because I wish I could talk about the craziness that went on! Lol.

I was planning on starting As Good As Dead (A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, #3) by Holly Jackson , but unfortunately it's still on its way from the library. Hopefully it will get here before my mood decides it doesn't want to read it anymore. Lol.

Meanwhile, I started on None Shall Sleep by Ellie Marney . I'm only about 50 pages in, but so far so good! I am intrigued.

Gwen | 83 comments I finished quite some books since I have to take the train to college and read between classes.

Sweet & Bitter Magic by Adrienne Tooley I rated this one star 'cause I felt like a lot was missing and could use some proper editing, but for a debut story I think it was okay.

Loveless by Alice Oseman Also rated this one star even though I enjoyed reading it. There are too many harmful things in it which should be called out in my opinion. I wrote quite a long review about it in case anyone wonders why I think it's harmful.

And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer by Fredrik Backman This isn't a book I'd normally read but I cried throughout the whole story and I think deserves so much more attention because it is absolutely beautiful.

The Foxhole Court (All for the Game, #1) by Nora Sakavic I finished the whole trilogy and I loved it even though I think the writing was quite messy. I saw a lot of people reading this so I had to give it a go and I'm glad I did.

Right now I'm reading Kings Rising (Captive Prince, #3) by C.S. Pacat and I finished the two previous books a few days ago. I'm also still reading The Pillars of the Earth (Kingsbridge, #1) by Ken Follett but since this one is way too heavy to bring with me to college, I'm not making a lot of progress in it. I hope I'm able to finish it before the year ends.
