Genre column and chart implemented... not really sure where to put the chart, since there's already 2 charts in the easily fittable spots, so for now it just blocks the point breakdowns of the first dozen rows..

You can modify your genre list over in column S, and it will populate the dropdown list in column F, you can use all 13 rows that line up with the red pie chart... once you settle on genres, just hide column S...

If you want to add your own info without messing anything up, then yes... anything on the far right of the sheet won't screw anything up...

Anything to the left of the hidden columns would require some formula fixes on the Participant Data sheet, and maybe elsewhere...

@Soo: Good to see you're figuring out my sheet... I copied it for you this year, and then forgot half the special formula changes... like how the BR column needs to be the BR date to count points in the points column...

Clearly you figured that out at some point...

Also, my sheet doesn't really support switching between physical books and audiobooks anymore, in favor of the hours measurement... that didn't seem like an issue, tho, since I checked if you did read & listens in 2020, and didn't see any from my quick skim... I know you did some in 2019, tho... if you need to do that, you'll probably want to just make 2 partial entries...

It varies by sheet... but you can see where hidden columns are by the little arrow to unhide...

On your sheet, it looks like yes, it's just R... and the Frozen columns A-B make it easy to do tons of columns and still see the book name...

Eep! Well that's good to know. I usually don't split up the percentage when I read & listen to the story. It's usually mostly audio or mostly print, so I just go one way or the other. Malazan & the Draconis Memoria series are the ones where I did both reading & listening.

Also... I'm not sure if you're doing audiobook hours right or not... I wasn't sure how to do hours as duration and still be able to do math with it, so it's just a decimal... so you need to do headmath to get the right partial hour, if you want 100% accuracy...

Looking at your sheet, I think you've just been doing Hours.Minutes... it'll be close to accurate, but I tended to just try to get close with even decimals... to be fully accurate, every 0.01 hr is 36 seconds... but realistically

Increments of 3 minutes are 0.05hrs
Increments of 6 minutes are 0.1hrs
Increments of 10 minutes are 0.16hrs
Increments of 15 minutes are 0.25hrs
Increments of 20 minutes are 0.33hrs

I usually just used combinations of those to come up with consistant audiobook lengths... I think, in the end, writing durations and converting to decimals in the spreadsheet just required so many more calculations...

message 59: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I'm definitely not doing the math. lol

The hours are going to be right and the minutes are inaccurate. If it ends up bugging me, which may happen, I'll fix it then.

It was easier to put Y/N for Audiobook. lol

I can probably get it back to that... just need to change the page points formula and copy it down...

Also means getting rid of the pages/hr data column and audiobook column coloring, and monthly audiobook hours...

It's definitely extra work... I just found it interesting how much variation there is in pages/hr, and there was a time I prided myself on listening to 25hrs of audio a day...

It's also a way to prioritize books that yield more points/hr, if you care about that (not necessarily a good way to pick books to read)...

message 61: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Nah. I'm mentally noting the things that work & don't work. I figure I can ping your brain towards the end of the year to spiff it up to what I want. It's a thought for later. Not trying to make ya do more work. =)

I'm not in the points race for the challenge. I'm in it more for recording my books & having fun chats with FBR gang.

I like seeing the various stats of books read, etc. Those are fun.

Thanks! But im not sure how to use the chart of standalones, continued series and the rest beacuse it just continues to add books in the continued

Anni | 5066 comments Paula wrote: "But im not sure how to use the chart of standalones, continued series and the rest beacuse it just continues to add books in the continued"

This chart gets its information from the colum where you fill in the series and the numer of the book in the series. Normally it should count books without a number as a standalone, I'm not sure why it isn't working, I'll have a look at it later.
You can alternatively add a “/", I tried it an your sheet and it worked :)

For finished series you have to add a star, like this one "★". I for example always write the number and the star behind it, like"Series xy 3★"
I added it in the column above the english/spanish part for copy/past-ing :) We can of course change the symbol to whatever you prefer.

I hope that helps, if not let me know :)

Elizabeth wrote: "In my tracker the Short Story/Novella/Book/Tome tracker isn't showing different colors."

I haven't looked yet, but it might be a symptom of books you've read... with how bar graphs work, even categories and odd categories are the same color... should resolve once 3-4 of the categories are greater than 0...

EDIT: There was a bug in the graph, but now the other thing I mention is the result... 1-0-2-1... 1 & 2 are the same color, so the graph looks like 3:1

Katie wrote: "Quick question for the challenge. Can you still list DNF books on your chart? And just have the pages you read? I don't know if that counts towards everything XD"

It does... I added a DNF option to the ratings column, if you want to use that to denote DNFs without giving a rating in the chart... you can also write DNF somewhere else if you want to still give a rating... the DNF option doesn't exclude it from anything... that's an advanced Virginie idea I didn't implement (yet)... and her main focus was making it so DNFs don't falsely count as short stories or novellas, because you quit early...

message 71: by Katie (new)

Katie K | 2600 comments Oh excellent!! I’ll do just that then. With the no ranking and marking DNF somewhere.

Oh good point! Yeah you wouldn’t wanted it marked as a novella or something. Huh. Anyways. Thanks!!

DNF is the first option in the ratings dropdown menu, before the star options... I added it to every sheet with a ratings column... might cause weirdness for anybody doing average ratings... but I think that's just on my sheet and Soo's because she copied mine this year...

You changed your font and background colors at some point... the way that area works, is that it defaults to visibility by being bluish white text on a light blood background, but when the number is 0 it is conditionally formatted to dark blue font AND background, so it's functionally invisible...

For a second, I thought the formula was broken... and them formulas are kinda complicated, especially for people with the graphic novel formula...

All sorted...

Hey Iain, I know you've mentioned this multiple times in different threads, but I can't be bothered to go hunting for it right now.

How do you calculate books that are only listed in audio format on GR? The book I am reading now is 10 hr and 54 min long.

Hailee wrote: "Hi I just noticed that the total points and the total pages (when calculating all 4 teams scores) on the main pages doesn't seem to be correct. Not a big issue I just thought you might want to know..."

I spent a bunch of time checking actual team scored before I realized you meant the extra data at the bottom... something I missed when creating the page... I copied and expanded a new main page, basically, because we changed from a 2 team competition back to a 4 team competition...

I'll fix it now... it was only summing the bottom 2 teams, since I think I added 2 rows to make room for the extra teams...

Saar The Book owl | 3099 comments Hi there, I've messed my sheet up a bit by adding rows. Can someone check on row 17 and 42? These are the new ones, but I can't see my points. Thanks!

message 99: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (last edited Aug 28, 2021 01:24AM) (new)

Timelord Iain | 35333 comments Mod
Generally, when you add rows, you need to drag and copy the formulas... to do that, you just highlight 1-3 rows of the formula section and use the slightly bigger square in the bottom right cell to drag copy the formulas...

NOTE: you also need to unhide the columns at the top to show the monthly helper data and copy that too... without that, the spreadsheet doesn't know what month you read the book, and doesn't input points...

Just for the future... I'll load it up and fix it right now...

You can also input a missing book at the bottom, and move it by clicking the row number to highlight then dragging it into place... or highlight all your book rows and sort by the date column... tons of ways to keep you books sorted, as long as you have rows empty at the bottom... just saying :D
