Philina | 342 comments I've finished LibriVox part 2 now and I like it. Emma seems to be a very nice young lady. So far I much prefer her to the other Emma. Speaking of which: why do you think Austen created two Emmas? One of you (I sadly don't remember who) read the Austen and names books and told us that the pool of genteel names to choose from was quite small, so maybe this is where the repetition comes from. A real-life acquaintance maybe? Then again, the two Emmas have very different characters.

Heather | 291 comments Yes Philina I was musing in a former post about why two main characters named Emma. Seems there must have been another name to choose!!! Even swap Margaret for this Emma?!

Ruth (misselizabethbennett) | 1052 comments I had read a Jane Austen biography that stated
Emma was her favorite name. It was also the name
of Mrs. Austen's mother, Mary Brydges, had a sister
named Emma.
There is a list of names that is like a cast
of characters.
