message 404: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay | 1 comments Hi everyone, I'm Lindsay. I just joined this group because I've read some classics and I want to read more. Since graduating high school, I've realized that I need to be able to talk about classics with people or risk them going over my head. Though I do love a good classic short stories. My hope for 2022 is to eliminate three monster sized classics - War & Peace, The Counte of Monte Cristo and Les Miserables of my shelfs! I'm eager to try and complete some of the challenges on this group!

Welcome, Lindsay. I think your three "monsters" are three of the best books ever written. I hope you love them as much as I think you will.

Nibble at the challenges or pile up your plate...all for fun!

Natalie (nsmiles29) | 842 comments Welcome Lindsay!

The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my top five favorite books of all time. It’s one I read over and over again.

I actually just finished War and Peace last week and I finished Les Mis last year.

Sounds like you’ve got some fun reading ahead!

message 416: by Noor (new)

Noor | 5 comments Hello all! I'm Noor. I'm from a small city in Canada. Now that I have a little more free time I've decided to get through some classics. My favourites thus far include the Count of Monte Cristo and Frankenstein! I have just finished Les Meserables and read Gone With the Wind a few months ago. I'm currently reading Crime and Punishment. I have Middlemarch, War and Peace, Call of the Wild, Overstory and Anna Karenina on my shelf that I still need to read. Hope to read some of them on here with you all. Thanks!

Greetings to all. My name is Stephen. I am a septuagenarian Englishman who has lived in the USA for most of the second half of his life, and the last fifteen years in the Pacific Northwest, a few miles north of Seattle.
I have read so many books in my time, and am now doing as much re-reading as I do reading for the first time. I have a strong preference for the loosely defined classics, books that have survived the test of time.
I am deeply involved in life long learning; organizing programs, teaching a bit, and taking a lot of classes, mostly involving history and literature.
Looking forward to some good discussions......

As you can see from my profile, I read a lot of speculative fiction and classics (especially Russian ones). I'm on my way to read more and I hope this group will help me with that.

Joanna, Stephanie, and Hedwidgebook welcome! I love to see growth in our group. Please join any discussion you would like. In addition to the five categories of books that we read each month: short story, new school, old school, revisit the shelf, and a long-read spanning three months' time, we have buddy reads and yearly reading challenges. There are chat threads to look at. Pick your favorite spot and join the conversations when you are ready! Threads stay open forever, so comment on any thread that you like

Oh and you might want to vote on our Listopia. It will let you see which books we have already read and vote on your favorites.

Your English is excellent! I speak and read French pretty well, but not at a native level. When my various book groups choose books that were originally written in French, I read them that way. Thanks to Project Gutenberg, ebooks of all the classics are available free or very cheap. Right now I am reading Les Liaisons dangereuses and will soon start The Man in the Iron Mask. I actually find it easier to read French classics than contemporary French books that have a lot of slang or modern words from technology.

I always found Zola the easiest to read in the orginal. Perhaps, like me, he had a limited vocabulary!

message 441: by Jerilyn (new)

Jerilyn | 82 comments Hello,
I am a long time member. My name is Jerilyn, and I am a retired librarian. In the recent couple of years I have not participated much because I have struggled to locate discussions as I read the books. It’s nice to receive emails about upcoming reads, and I always choose at least one.
Is it possible to link from announcements to the discussions somehow? I felt victorious yesterday after locating the current discussions after failing for months. Now today I can’t find them again. I finished The Gambler last weekend, Carmilla yesterday. Starting Razor’s Edge today.
Thank you to the moderators for your efforts.
Jerilyn

Jerilyn, All the discussions for group reads are located in the the Current Group Reads Folder, which is the second folder listed on the main group page. The books are also displayed at the top of the page with links provided there.

If you select the "group home" at the top right of this page, it will take you to the main page, scroll down and you will find everything you are looking for. If you want a quick path to a particular discussion, you can always bookmark the page in your browser.

Hope this is helpful.

Wow, Jillian, I went to your link and I am so charmed by your description of yourself! I see we are already GR friends, and it's great to know more about you. I only joined this group last year, I think, and I haven't been as active in it as in several others. But I agree, people are interesting and welcoming.

For someone who started reading "late", you certainly have made up for lost time!
