Hi, I'm Wendy from Illinois. I love classics, my favorite being Grapes of Wrath and Wuthering Heights. Right now I'm into reading American historical fiction/non-fiction and learning so much history I was never taught in school! My goal is to read an historical novel from all 50 states. Hobbies, in addition to reading, include RV travel, knitting and volunteering at an amazing Frank Lloyd Wright home/museum.

Have to say I love your goal--may have to steal it. :-) We have a personal challenge thread, so if you ever feel like sharing your progress it would be fun to follow your travels!
Welcome, Wendy. I love historical novels for the same reason, always so much to learn! Good luck with your personal challenge. I'd love to visit the museum--love FLW's style.
Hi Wendy! Welcome! That is such a fun goal! It would be fun to see your progress and which books you find for each state.
Wendy, welcome. Since you like historical novels, there is a buddy read group that will read The Color of Lightning by Paulette Jiles next month. Maybe you would like to join us? We recently read Enemy Women and several other historical novels and we have quit a list of them ahead of us. Check out Buddy Read feeds for November.
Thank you everyone! Terry, I put The Color of Lightning on my want to read list; sounds exactly like one I would love to read. As far as my personal 50 states goal, I'm shelving my books according to states to keep track (some cover several states). I also started an American Spirit book group on here (only 3 members so far though), which led me to finding this group! As far as classics, another favorite was Upton Sinclair's, The Jungle, which covers classics and American history and pretty close to home as I'm not too far from Chicago.
hello, i am elizabeth and i am new to goodreads and all this group thing so i do not know exactly how this works. I enjoy reading classics and was hoping to catch up, and i think this group will be great for this purpose!!
Hello and welcome to both Wendy and Elizabeth. I'm glad you are with us and I hope you enjoy catching up on the classics.
Hi, Elizabeth, welcome aboard. You should catch on very quickly, but if you have any problems, feel free to ask for help. Take a tour of the site and join in any discussions you are interested in.
Thanks a lot bob and sara, i really appreciate it!!
I've been out of town for the past couple of weeks. Welcome to all of our newest members. So glad to see the group grow with more bibliophiles.
Hello, Folks! my name is Aqeel. I really like classics but unfortunately i haven't read many due to lack of time and anxiety about reading other books. Fortunately enough i discovered this group which gave me the enthusiasm to dive into classics. I hope i keep with the group's pace. I'm currently starting with Metamorphoses by Ovid.

Yes , James Herriot has got such a sweet and wonderful writing style ! It's a pleasure to read his books - real mood elevators ! 😊
Hello everyone! This is actually my first time joining a group on Goodreads (I hope to get how this works soon!). Of the authors you mentioned above, I especially enjoyed reading Jane Austen (it's a pity she couldn't write more novels!!).
The Brontë sisters were amazing aswell. Jane Eyre is so beautifully written, Wuthering Heights is a page-turner (even if I felt like slapping them both 'til my hands burned haha), Agnes Grey's autobiographical and clear depictions... I was also recommended to read Shirley some time ago.
For now, I plan to tackle Middlemarch. I'm really looking forward to read it!
I hope to make good bookish friendships on here, nice to meet you all!
Hi Lucia! Welcome to the group! I also love Jane Eyre and agree with you 100% about Wuthering Heights! We actually read Shirley as a group read earlier this year. I’m glad I read it even though I didn’t love it like I do Jane Eyre. ☺️
Welcome to the group, Savita and Lucia. I am so glad that you have joined us. I look forward to reading and discussing classics with you.

Hi , Lucia ! I agree with you about Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights . I didn't like Middlemarch though . 😕

Thank you everyone! I'll keep you updated on my progress with Middlemarch. For now, though, Dracula butted in (so far so good! the writing is somehow so immersing). I also understand people who didn't like this or that classic; I read Mrs Dalloway some time ago and didn't get the hype, maybe it just wasn't the right moment for me, idk. I guess it wasn't what I expected yet I liked the writing.
Some years later, I happened to take a course on support services for mental illnesses, and I read an article on Virginia Woolf and how her mental health had influenced her work. It was pretty interesting. I think I'll read more of her novels in the future, maybe The Waves (I've heard good things about it).

Yes , that's true , Lucia .
That's interesting information on Virginia Woolf . I didn't know.
I haven't read any of her books.
