Welcome, Bojana. Since you already love classics, you are going to find a home here and lots of kindred spirits.

message 152: by Jacqui (new)

Jacqui (jaxlef) Hi

I'm Jacqui from the UK. I'm an eclectic reader as I've found most people on Goodreads are. Mysteries, Fantasy, Sci Fi, Historical and Action/Adventure are what I read the most but I have a ton of classics that I keep putting to one side.

There they are sitting on the shelves looking at me reproachfully!

Hopefully this group will help me get motivated to finally read some I've been meaning to read or re-read those I've actually forgotten about.

Michaela | 386 comments Welcome Jaqui and everyone I missed! :) It´s nice to read Classics in a group, though I fear your bookshelves will grow! ;)

Antoinette | 61 comments Hello all,

Thank you Sara for inviting me to the group. My name is Antoinette. I live in Calgary. Work part time as a nurse, but retirement is looming in the near future.
I love books and I especially love classics. I am in two physical bookclubs- but of course, we have had to meet through Zoom. One of them is a classics group. There are so many books I want to read, so I am super happy to be in this group.

Natalie (nsmiles29) | 842 comments Hi Antoinette!

Welcome to the group! I’ve read lots of fun books with everyone here. Some I would’ve never thought to read. 🙂 That’s fun you’re in other physical book groups! I can’t find one that reads books I’d like to read. They’re all chick flicks all the time. 😂

Truly happy that you have joined, Antoinette. I know this is a group you are going to enjoy, and I always love having your input on anything I am reading!

I'm with Natalie in envying you the physical group. I hope you aren't confined to meeting on Zoom for much longer.

They're fun and a great way to finally read books you've put off. They're also great for reading books out of your comfort zone and realizing that there are even more books to read. Enjoy. :))

Alan Scheer | 13 comments Hi I just stumbled across this group last night and I’m really excited about what you have all been doing for years now.
I’m trying to work my way through the folders and I haven’t found a short story for May.Is there one?
I’d also be interested if there are people keen on doing classic drama? The short story and drama are huge areas I love and even though I’ve studied both of them before, there are massive gaps in my reading of drama.
Finally,I think the selections for bingo are so great. But is the current bingo chart for 2021 only.
Finally again, apart from the English nineteenth and eighteenth century novel,I’m a huge fan of the nineteenth and twentieth century Russian novel. I did a course once which started with Pushkin and then went through all of the big names. Then I did a course on what was then called Soviet literature-that indicates my age. I would be keen to do this with a buddy or set up some sort of folder by myself to travel through the nineteenth and twentieth century novel.
Thanks-sounds like a great group.

message 176: by Alan (new)

Alan Scheer | 13 comments I tried to do the French novel-Balzac’s first is very boring-looking,but du Maupassant and Zola and the rest of Balzac really interests me. I tried The Red and the Black but found it so boring I had to stop.

Welcome, Alan. As you and I have already met on a thread, I'm happy to see you are jumping in and adding to the conversation.

May's short story is Babette’s Feast and the discussion can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Please feel free to set up a thread in the Bingo folder and join in the fun. There are other challenges as well that you might check out. Never too late to join.

Your expertise in Russian lit will come in handy. We have often read Russian authors and I imagine we will have some Russian reads in the future. You can always ask for a buddy read if there is a particular book you are interested in reading.

Enjoy the group!

Alan Scheer | 13 comments Thank-you everyone . I started Babette’s Feast yesterday.

message 188: by Alan (new)

Alan Scheer | 13 comments I think when we think of what is classic lit. Pre-1900,we are all pretty much familiar with the same canon. Unfortunately, apart from some major stars in the nineteenth century-the Brontes,Mrs. Gaskell,George Elliot, there isn’t a lot of discussion about women or writers who do not easily spring to mind.
There is an exceptional publishing house located in Canada where I live which has been trying to unearth many of the forgotten works of this period. They are called Broadview Press, and just looking at their catalogue of never-heard of writers is very exciting. Unfortunately because of the nature of publishing, they seemed to have shrunk their catalogue, but there are still many surprises in it. If you live in the U.S. or Europe shopping from Canada can be quite inexpensive as our dollar is very low in comparison. I don’t work for the company,I just think it’s a very exciting resource.

message 189: by Steven (new)

Steven Meyer | 12 comments I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask. But, I had a question about challenges. Do you have to sign up to do personal challenges when the topics are announced or can you start when you join the group? I'd like to do a challenge, but wouldn't be able to complete a whole year since I just joined.

message 190: by Sara, Old School Classics (new)

Sara (phantomswife) | 9407 comments Mod
Steven, you can absolutely join the challenges at any time during the year, and we hope that you will. Feel free to adjust your challenge according to the number of months left in the year. For example, with the Old and New Challenge, since you would be joining basically in June, you would only need to list six books, two for each category, and one alternate. Have fun!

Steven Meyer | 12 comments Sara wrote: "Steven, you can absolutely join the challenges at any time during the year, and we hope that you will. Feel free to adjust your challenge according to the number of months left in the year. For exa..."

Thanks so much. I'm going to look through the challenges right now and pick out one. I can't wait to start a challenge and start reading the group picks. I'm going back to school and the semester just ended and I haven't been able to read too much in the past couple of months.

message 192: by Zehra (new)

Zehra Nur (drawingarts64) Hello people!

I'm joining this group to hopefully read more classics and enjoy your presence while I'm at it. I am a highschooler and after having been traumatized by my literary classes (and some teachers) to stop reading books, this year I've decided to confront my bad feelings and start again. I'm hoping to complete 40 books this year, although my enjoyment of the books is more important to me than their quantity so I might not reach my goal. You can call me Zehra and if you don't know how to pronounce it don't worry, nobody does ;)

Overall I'm a very curious person in a wide variety of subjects so I have a lot of interests ranging from art to sports. I hope that we'll get along well and have fun exploring the worlds of past geniuses!

Hi, Zehra, and welcome to Classics for fun. I hope you will reawaken your love for reading. I do wish classes and teachers would not turn so many off of reading these wonderful books. You are sure to find something you can love here, though, and always someone to discuss it with! Hope to see you in the threads.
