Luís (blue_78) Hey, book-people! My name is Luís, and I've read the classics since perhaps the age of thirteen. I studied French and English in college, and I studied German for a year. My first language is Portuguese, and one of my favorite classics is Middlemarch.

Welcome, Luis. I am always a bit awed by those who speak several languages. I think it would be amazing to be able to read many of the classics in the language in which they were written. Thank heaven for translators! Middlemarch is an excellent choice for a fav.

message 1166: by April (last edited Aug 09, 2024 05:50PM) (new)

April | 401 comments Hello!
I do not believe I ever made an official introduction here. My name is April, and I love the classics and have been on a journey to continue to catch up on them. In fact, this is where I started my, somewhat later, reading adventures. Sure, i read a few books as a child and preteen, but once high school started, it was pretty much only required reading. I loved Cacher in the Rye and another classic (totally blanking on the name now) in high school, and never really had time to "waste" risking mediocre writing. So, i continued with the classics in my free time, until i got a bit more free time (post graduation) and more organized (figured out more of what type of topics i enjoyed). Classics are still on my list, but there have also been more contemporary books that i have enjoyed or are interested in reading in the future. So yeah. That is my story!

Glad you popped in to introduce yourself, April. It is always good to include a variety in your reading, but nice to always have the brilliant writers of the past to fall back on for a solid read. Delighted you are here.

message 1172: by Dr. (new)

Dr. Jasmine Dear Friends,

My name is Dr Jasmine and I originate from the culture where one is required to read dozens of classical novels as a matter of fact, when growing up- otherwise you cannot even graduate from an average state school :o)
So this is when my love of classics started. I do read contemporary books, too, but tend to fall back on classics all the time, in between.

Three of my favorite ones are

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
Red and Black by Stendhal.

If anyone wants to chat re those books feel free to message me!

Happy reading :o)

Dr Jasmine

Hi Luis :o)

Thank you, I do feel welcomed. In your profile you've said that you like all genres "as long as they are positive". Do you guys think, that this is the essence of any classic literature book?? Those authors whose work withstood the test of time, they managed to show us something positive, some kindness, some compassion, forgiveness , empathy, even in relation to the darkest characters that they portray. For example, Lolita (Nabokov), Nana (Emile Zola), Heathcliff (Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte) are very complex characters and yet the authors make them endearing- to at least a small degree.

Yes, I like the way you put that question. I tend to like or review books since history is inside me or I am immersed in it. First, I search for the book/author to get to know each other. But you're right! Thank you for asking the question directly! It's a pertinent question, without a doubt!

Dr. Jasmine Luís wrote: "I've not enjoyed Wuthering Heights, but I enjoyed The Red and the Black much more."

Hi Luis :o)

Wuthering Heights is full of violence, which does seem somehow unnecessary and even unexpected! for the social class described.. however, I really like the book's message that "giving up on love" leads to deep tragedies for both lovers and a number of related people - a warning of sorts :o)

Hello Arius and welcome :o))

Thank you for the introduction to your favorite book, I have added it to my reading list.
From my part, can I recommend that you consider Ukrainian and Russian classics as part of your reading repertoire? They are unlike anything else, and you don't know if you'd love it until you try it..
Perhaps, Bulgakov's Master and Margarita, to start you off.?

Have a wonderful day :o)

fra | 2 comments heii I'm a new member here and I thought I might as well introduce myself a bit.
I'm Francesca, 18yo and I'm from Milan, Italy. I study languages (english, french, german and spanish) and I'm total sucker for history, art and cinema. Other than reading in my free time I play the piano, go to the gym and go running. I'd love to dive into some classics from various literatures, so I think this group will work for me! Really excited to meet new people! <33
