Welcome to the Group - Introductions

Hi everyone! I'm Celestine. I'm today years old to know that Goodreads has these kinds of communities to connect readers together, but I am so excited to join this group and hope to read more classics! I have a special place in my heart for "1984" by George Orwell, about how relevant it is despite the time it was written. Apparently, classics become classics for a reason! I think that's my original incentive to start reading more classics.

Welcome Celestine. We have 4 group reads each month, challenges you can play with, and Buddy Reads. Threads stay open, so feel free to comment on any book you wish. I hope you enjoy the group as much as I do.

  Welcome to the group.
Hi everyone, My name is Tim. I've returned to Goodreads (having had no desire to leave) by virtue of the fact that I retired December 1, 2023 and in the process of moving out of my office of over 35 years lost my GR passwords and my 600+ books read record. Oh well, plan on recovering some/most of those over time. Bottom line, I love reading classics and I love alphabetical challenges. I am filled with joy that I found the CUOC community. I am signing up for Challenge 16, Alphabetical Authors Challenge. Thank you, Bob and CUOC family, for being. Tim

Oh that's a heartbreak. Losing a work email can cause such disruption. I'm glad you joined our group. You may join any thread. The discussions never close.

Hello, everyone. I'm Susan, and I discovered this group on the profile of a new GR friend.
Hello, everyone. I'm Susan, and I discovered this group on the profile of a new GR friend. I read and re-read classics. (Often I just open one of my favorites at random to read a few pages during a coffee break.)
I was immediately hooked by the listing of Middlemarch because I just snagged The Marriage Question: George Eliot's Double Life from the New Books shelf at the library. It seems to be a bio told in the light of whichever novel Eliot was writing at the various stages of her life and her relationships. And it seems to call for some memory refreshing, especially re: Middlemarch.
Looking forward to exploring that, and other books, with the group.

Welcome, Susan. I'm so pleased that you found something to dive into immediately. The bio sounds very interesting, so you are probably already expanding my overweight TBR.

I've read a fair few classics but I definitely need encouragement to read more so I joined this group! :) My area is Greek & Roman myth but I have a love of the gothic and I'm looking forward to the upcoming group read of The Picture of Dorian Gray, I've had a beautiful copy sat on my shelf for years so this is the perfect opportunity!

Welcome to the group, Jenny. I'm glad you have already found a book/discussion that you are interested in joining. Enjoy!

Hey I'm Siena! I mostly read classics with a mix of romance and other genres. Right now I'm reading Crackpot by John Waters! I am just figuring out how to use Groups, I've been looking for forums to discuss books and get recommendations.

Hi :) I'm Kenzie, I'm 22 and I thought I'd join a group that shares my affection for classics. My favorite at the moment is East of Eden by Steinbeck, but I've also really enjoyed a fair amount of Oscar Wilde, as well as Albert Camus (though I don't really enjoy his books they literally haunt me). Anywayzzzzz I'm always open to recommendations and discussion! <3 I'm thinking of tackling some of the Russian classics next :D

Hi all! My name is Victoria. I fell in love with classical literature when I was a kid reading Great Illustrations Classics, abridged for children. I was shocked by how long the actual Count of Monte Cristo was lol.

Hi, the name's Mike over here. I'm a « 90's » boy growing up with fantasy fiction, and just recently I fell into the « Classics » trap for uh... what reason ? « Elevating my cultural knowledge ? » « Reading books over 1k pages ? » « Taming my impulsivity by tackling monsters ? ». Well... turns out my naivety caused more consequences than I suspected, as I fell in love with them, became even MORE articulated and learned to take the time to enjoy long, long, loooong stories filled with poetic descriptions of the mundane. It surprised me. And I loved it.

They'll sure continue to sooth my brain for a while.
To the next time, folks !

Hi everyone, my name is Sheryl and I'm from Malaysia! I don't know of many people who read classic fiction around here, then I found this group and thought it would be a great way of discovering more classic discussions!
I'm also especially excited that one of April's read is The Picture of Dorian Gray! (Wilde is my favorite author by far)
My favorite classic reads are Frankenstein and The Metamorphosis!

Hello Craig and Sheryl. Welcome! Look around. We have 5 current books/short stories/plays being read each month. There is a Buddy Reads thread with even more books than the 5 that were voted in. Feel free to join any thread you like, and threads never close! We look forward to seeing you in the discussions.

Hi everyone, I'm Olivia, a writer, film reviewer, and musician!I made a new Goodreads account to get myself back into a regular reading routine - I had let it slip after a few years unfortunately - and I'm hoping to share thoughts on books I've read, and get some great recommendations from other people that I may have otherwise missed :)
