Matthew oh my goodness can I relate! I go through phases and seasons. Finding that balance is difficult. Reading though gives me something I cannot find elsewhere, so I personally am glad I have been able to find time for it again after a couple of very busy and social decades.

Welcome Patrick! I love that you have found us and look forward to hearing your voice in our discussions. We have four books and a short story that we are reading each month. In addition there are Buddy Reads and Challenges. I think the variety of discussions as well as the challenges make this group interesting. Please feel free to comment on any thread as they never close. For example, I commented on a June short story thread last night that people are still discussing.

Patrick Thank you so much! I am kind of helpless at group reads because I read too many books “at once”, but I will look at everything.

I like the “Catching Up” idea because even though I have been an enthusiastic reader all my life, there are always gaps to fill, and my retirement is an ideal time to do it.

LOL retirement... I tried that. I had planned on "just" substitute teaching when I got a call from a teaching friend who is now a principal. She said, "I know it's the day before school starts but we really need...." I am now beginning my third year at that elementary school and hoping retirement will be four years away.

I agree we all have a list of books we want to read. A running joke here is how that list of books keeps multiplying.

Happy to have you here, Patrick. I love finding those gems I missed, and you are right, retirement gives you the opportunity to fill those gaps.

message 860: by Patrick (last edited Jul 04, 2023 08:27AM) (new)

Patrick I retired in 2020 as a result of (1) COVID decimating my private English teaching business in Querétaro, Mexico, and (2) turning 62 and becoming eligible to receive my Social Security benefit. No regrets. I’m really enjoying it.

Filling the gaps is very enjoyable. There are some titles that should have turned up in one of my many literature courses, but they just never did!

message 870: by Martina (new)

Martina Pugliese Oh hello everyone! First time I try the groups feature in Goodreads, thought I'd join as I've always been a huge fan of classics, though I've not read that many in recent years, preferring essays and contemporary fiction.
At the moment, I'm on East of Eden which is an absolute masterpiece and made me remember what is genuine, outstanding, great literature. So, here I am. I live in Scotland, I'm Italian, by profession I work in tech but I've always been interested in all aspects of culture.

I'm trying out groups for the first time too! I've never understood why people don't like classics, and I've tried so hard to get my brother to read them (and I failed lol). I'm glad that people who like classics exist 💀

message 877: by Lina (new)

Lina | 1 comments Hello everyone!
My name is Lina and I am a student from Sweden.
I’m not really used to this website, I’ve mostly just read by myself, but figured I should try and be a bit more social. I have not read that many classics in the past except for children’s books, so I’m trying to catch up. I’m currently reading “To the lighthouse” by Virginia Woolf which is…fun…when you’re not a native English speaker. I don’t think I’ve registered a single thing I’ve read so far, but hey, at least I’m trying…

message 878: by Patrick (new)

Patrick Virginia Woolf is the deep end of the pool! 🙂

Welcome, Lina. Woolf is a challenge, even for a native English speaker. Don't be discouraged if most of it escapes you, you wouldn't be the first!

Lorraine Donovan | 1 comments Hello book friends!

So excited to discover this group- I grew up in NJ, now split my time between Denver and Topeka, KS. My all time favorite author is JD Salinger (his short stories) and I seem to reread Wuthering Heights a lot. Looking forward to discovering new favorites!

Emu, Lina, and Lorraine welcome to the group. Threads never close, so feel free to comment on anything you find interesting. Also, it's never too late to start a Reading Challenge. Those are always fun. I hope you find many books and people here that you enjoy spending time with.

Welcome to the group, Kathleen. I hope we can get you enthused again! There is always a lot going on, so take the time to check the threads and join any discussion that interests you. Also, for getting yourself motivated, nothing beats the challenges...you can pick and choose from the buffet and only go for a line bingo if you don't want to over-commit.

message 886: by Ela (new)

Ela B (elab) | 3 comments Hi :) I am new to being active on Goodreads, and I have to freely admit this: When I had to read classics at school, both in german and english, I did kind of dislike them very much (although that could be because I "had to" read them) Now, being able to choose for myself which ones I would or would not like to read, I am rather inclined to do so. There have been years in between, of course, maybe maturity too, who knows. Discovering many interesting authors, enjoying the prose and way of writing of most, albeit the plots do not always agree with me (I am looking at you, Daisy Miller). Hopefully I can find many more authors and books unknown to me, that is big part of the fun of Goodreads for me.

message 887: by Sara, Old School Classics (new)

Sara (phantomswife) | 9407 comments Mod
Welcome, Ela. I find many people who say they only discovered they loved the classics when they were no longer forced to study them. I do hope you enjoy reading them here, with us. There is truly some of everything to discover.

Hello from Denmark, I am looking forward to reading classics with you. I am a slow reader and may not be able to finish in time, but I will join the discussion later on, if that is acceptable ;-)
I am currently reading Austen and Dickens - and will get to Little Dorrit at some point.
