Welcome, Em. We will be so pleased to have your comments and outlook here. It took me three tries to get through The Brothers Karamazov, but I'm very glad I persevered. Be sure to sandwich some lightness between those Russian reads. :o)

Thank you, Sara! I appreciate the reminder about adding in some lightness :) it is definitely needed with some of these reads. I am so glad to hear that you made it through The Brothers Karamazov, it will be interesting to maybe compare thoughts on it sometime too.

Shawn Davis (shawn_davis) I'm a new author in the Teen/YA genre, but what I love best are classics. Just picked up several new ones at a used book sale the other day and looking forward to working through them: Death of a Salesman, Tess of the D'Ubervilles, One Day in the life of Ivan Denisovich, and The Prince.

Nice to meet a bunch of others who love old books.

Best,
Shawn

Jackie (goodreadscomrumbelle517) | 1 comments Hello, I'm Jackie, I just joined a few days ago. I'm from North Carolina. I read Fantasy, Horror, Historical fiction, and I'm trying to get into science fiction and non-fiction. I read a little romance. Some of favorite classics are Jane Eyre, Bleak House, Treasure Island, Middlemarch, Something Wicked this Way Comes, A Tale of Two Cities, Anne of Green Gables, Anna Karenina.

message 821: by spoko (new)

spoko (spokospoko) | 134 comments Hi all! My name’s Matt (though online I do more commonly go by spoko). I’m from Nebraska. I read pretty broadly. Left to my own devices, I lean heavily toward non-fiction, so one reason I like book clubs is they help me counter that.

I’m always reading several books at a time—never fewer than half-dozen, and more typically around a dozen. I’m almost exclusively an audiobook listener, so the one time I run into trouble is when two audiobooks have the same reader. Otherwise, my long commute gives me plenty of time to keep up the variety.

Some of my favorite classics: A Christmas Carol, The Screwtape Letters, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Mrs. Dalloway, A Tale of Two Cities, Beloved, The Plague, and Man’s Search for Meaning.

Yeah, I’ve gradually grown to this approach, and it works for me. I find that doing several at a time really helps me be willing to give a new book a shot. After all, even if it’s mediocre, it’s not like it will be (even close to) the only thing I’m reading. And I almost always find some delightful ideas that bounce back and forth between books. I was recently reading Middlemarch and The Lincoln Highway simultaneously, and found that both were exploring the way that too much of a good character trait can easily become a real flaw. I might have read either individually & missed that, but they reinforced it in each other as I was reading them alongside one another. I like the way it makes my brain work.

message 831: by Ron (new)

Ron Hi everyone, I'm Ron. Texan here (unfortunately. LOL!)

Someone in another group told me about this place because of a current read that's going on around here (for 'Into the Wild') so I figured I'd join as well as check out the rest of your page.

Looking forward to the interactions with you all.

I'm mainly a nonfiction reader though I try classic books every now and then. I think the last classic I read was 'The Picture of Dorian Grey', but that was the last one I can remember.

I hope to have fun around here though and maybe get introduced to other books that normally aren't on my radar.

message 847: by Mina (new)

Mina Hi! I'm Mina from south Louisiana. I hit a reading slump in 2020 and am trying to get back into it. I love the idea of reading the classics, but had no idea where to start. So glad I found this group! I'm a little all over the place with what genres I read. My favorite classics I've read in the past are Pride & Prejudice, Treasure Island, and The Masque of the Red Death.

Anyway, looking forward to July's reads and getting back into reading in general.

message 849: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Martin | 1 comments Hi all! I’m matthew, a 19 year old physics major going into his sophomore year of college. When I was younger I was a certified bookworm. Always nose deep in some book, whether that be a Percy Jackson novel or an instruction manual on how to build a DIY drink dispenser using a watermelon, I just liked reading. When I went into high school, I very purposefully shifted my persona into something very different than what I was(like I’m sure many others have); and there were growing pains associated with this desperate metamorphosis. I always felt a little fraudulent, not comfortable in my own skin despite having transformed myself into who I thought I wanted to be. I felt was always putting on a show even when I was the most relaxed. I’m trying to deal with this incessant imposter syndrome and Now, I’m just realizing that I am and always was way more comfortable reading a book alone than I am aggressively socializing. There’s nothing wrong with my natural introverted-ness and I’m embracing it!

So this kind of re-evolution of myself starts (at least I think) by reading more like I used to. I only just picked back up reading but I can’t believe I’ve gone so long without doing it. I’m trying to stay consistent and I love discussion so I figured I’d join this group! I certainly feel like a real novice among all y’all veteran readers and I know I’m young but I think I have a lot to add to some discourse over these classics! looking forward to reading along with you all. Cheers.

For what it is worth, Matthew, I think all of us go through those stages when the reading takes a backseat to life--or to figuring life out. I'm very happy that you are ready to embrace your "reader" side and hope you find a lot of social outlet in reading with our group. Welcome!
