On a foggy day the three Baudelaire children are testing an invention. At 14 years-old Violet is an inventor, at 12 years-old Klaus is an obsessive reader, and an infant named sunny has surprisingly sharp teeth. During their time at the beach the local banker Mr. Poe informs them their parents have died in a fire at their home. They are then transferred to their closest living relative (closest to their house) where they meet Count Olaf. His house is in complete disarray and forces the Baudelaires to clean it up. He also tells them to make dinner for his frightful theater troop when they arrive. When they do Olaf becomes angry and slaps Klaus in the face and taunts the others that he will drop Sunny. Some time after Olaf forces violet to be in a play with her. Knowing something is up the children go to their kind neighbor, justice Strauss for legal info. The children find out that the wedding scene in the play between Violet and Olaf will be legally binding, allowing him to inherit their fortune. They try to stop him but he holds sunny hostage in a cage. During the play Violet botches the signature on the marriage certificate once sunny escapes her cage, but before Olaf can be arrested his troop turns of the lights and he escapes. The story is not over when Mr. Poe tells the Baudelaires that they will be delivered to their Uncle Monty.
I will give this book 5/5 for it's plot, and overall presence the characters and the story itself brings.
