Daniel | 3 comments (Military?) SF: Multi-system space war with alien race that eats other races.

At least 1 other allied hi-tech race (humanoid cat I think - humans fought war with them in the past?).
systems have one or more fixed (hidden) points where ships can travel ftl between them.
Read paperback in mid 2000s.

***potential mild spoilers below ( don't remember details very well...)

It had a Subplot about survey ship finding hidden route between systems with military implications.
Survey ship Encountered another alien race (avian I think?) also fighting same enemy.
The survey ship captain pretended to have authority to act as a diplomat or something to try and get an alliance with this new race as humanity needed help fighting these aliens

I've been trying to remember/find this book again for years now, so any help would be appreciated.

Terry Stofer | 22 comments some of it reminds me of David Weber, but with out the eating part

Daniel | 3 comments Thanks, but it's not one of Weber's unfortunately ( I've read all of his stuff )

beichst | 171 comments I know you indicated you have read all David Weber's items. However, does that include his collaboration with Steve White on the Starfire series? The reason I ask is that Steve White wrote novels based on the Starfire series which match many of the points you raised. E.g. In Death Ground. It is military SF. Has an alien race that eats other races. Has an avian species (Ophiuchi), etc.

If not that series the other series you might check out that has an avian race, military SF, etc. is 'The Damned' by Alan Dean Foster. The first book being A Call to Arms.

Daniel | 3 comments Yes! I'm almost certain the starfire series was it! I looked over some of the blurbs and they match up. Re-buying them on a kindle now.

Brad, Terry, thanks to both of you.

Sorry I dismissed Weber before. I somehow had no idea he wrote that series despite reading everything from his honorverse and safehold series.
