The first couple chapters are clear as a bell.
Two lords are looking over a field where serfs are toiling. One lord 'offers' one of the women to the other, which is accepted.
She's terrified, of course, especially when she sees that he is deformed and looks like he has a lion's face. They end up having a glorious weekend and a little after she returns home, surprise! She's pregnant...she has a son with the same face 'deformities'.
I read this in 1992. It seemed new-ish at the time.
