My original title was Competitive Junkie. My agent sent our a first round of manuscripts and I received a number of favorable responses but no offers. The favorable responses were similar in that they loved the idea but thought that they needed an expert author to sell it. I really thought that they were not grasping what I was trying to accomplish which was a journey to discovery told not by an expert but by a real person who shared a strong competitive drive with countless others. So, using Eat, Pray, Love as an inspiration for a terrific journey of non-fiction, I came up with Compete, Play, Win. While I can't be sure the title made the difference, the book sold to the first publisher it was sent to under the new title. While you can't judge a book by its cover, the title is important in conveying the right perception.
