It was intense and I really liked it, but I did find some aspects a bit disturbing. One of the things that has stuck out for me is the language. I'm not British, so there are so many words and phrases that I don't know. Context helps, but some of them are truly foreign words for me.
I do like this series and the ongoing character development with Kim and her team. The brutality both physical and emotional bothered me a little in this one. And Helen as the arch villainess wasn't my favourite resolution in the series. I liked the last book better. Lynn, interesting that you notice the difference in the language. Being Australian and watching a lot of BBC and English TV over the years it isn't a problem for me.
Really enjoying our buddy read discussions of this series. Thanks everyone for your comments.

Watching all the excellent British police shows like A Touch of Frost, Inspector Morse and Prime Suspect really makes me enjoy Marsons books even more. In fact, Kim is a lot like Jane Tennyson in Prime Suspect.
Lauren how do you watch these shows? Im quit interested. This was morbidly my favorite book so far. The twist and turns made for a suspenseful read.

That said, I think many of them are on US streaming services. Not sure which ones.
Shelby, there is a service called "Brit Box" where you can stream British shows. I don't know how much it costs. Or if you purchase a membership with your local PBS station, you can stream many of the British police shows.

Lynn, when I first started reading British crime dramas and police procedurals, it was on my Kindle. I’d actually look up the definition using the embedded dictionary, which was the Oxford version. For many of the terms, there was a British definition! I also Googled a lot so I’m now self taught. I can certainly understand how it might be confusing because it’s not always about context.
I loved this story because it had everything I want in a police procedurals, mystery and series development. I couldn’t put it down and the audio version is outstanding.
