It did cross my mind that one of the parents could be in on it to extort money from the other family. And Stephen's circumstances would suggest him as the most likely candidate. But didn't he act in horror when Liz suggested they outbid the other family.. But maybe that wasn't him being sensitive but being upset that the financial situation would be discovered.
I knew the third player in the game had to be someone on the inside. I wondered about the parents. I kept wanting to point at Elizabeth, but I really didn't have a reason. When Helen Barton was introduced as the same cop who had worked the previous kidnapping case, I became suspicious. She was being forced to resign or retire and had a grudge. She reminded me of the villain in the movie "Speed", a former cop with a grudge.
Good sleuthing, Robin. I should have picked up on that. She seemed such a weak character and that should have been my first hint.
Robin wrote: "he was being forced to resign or retire and had a grudge. She reminded me of the villain in the movie "Speed", a former cop with a grudge."Excellent deduction, Robin!
I also guessed it was Helen when Eloise died. Helen was the only one who knew Eloise had come to the house. Also, tucking Eloise in is something a woman would do and neither Elizabeth nor Karen left the house the entire time.
Excellent deductions, Robin, and that reference to Speed is dead on! (Loved that movie.)
I’m not exactly sure when I began to suspect that Suspect #3 was on the inside as it was a gradual knowing. Helen was one of my suspects but so was Lucas, the police officer assigned to watch the house on the inside. When Helen failed to reveal critical details from the first case, she moved up my list. I also wondered if Stephen or Elizabeth was involved but after awhile, I just couldn’t see a parent putting his/her child in the hands of Will & Symes. A fake abduction, yes. But this was awful for those children.
