It starts off pretty slow and doesn't really get going till part 2 the war parts are the most interesting to me.

Ah yeah but the start's always background haha. Have you read Henderson's Boys by Robert Muchamore? That's a really good WWII series, also the prequel to his Cherub series.

Haven't heard of Henderson's boys before but I have been wanting to read the cherub series

I can start them whenever you want, because I'm always up for a re-read of Cherub :p One of my all-time favourite books.
