I recently finished book 4 of the mortal instruments Currently reading the Rose Society.

It's late so I don't know how to phrase this delicately, but does mortal instruments get better? I actually like the story well enough, but the characters feel a bit flat or something.
I liked 1-3. In 4 Jace and Clary get really annoying. 3 is the best one I've read so far.
