Carolyn F. Oh my gosh, I just finished chapter 19 and I'm so depressed. Also, I'm angry for Spin with the way she's being treated. So unfair. I'm really enjoying this book so far.

Jennifer | 135 comments Alas, this is a slow going book for me. I think one of the things I'm struggling with is that I am having trouble finding Spensa likable. I think this is going to be a test of whether the character development pays off in the end because I happened to see a video in which someone spoke highly about the book and made mention of character development.

I think another thing challenging me with this book is that I am getting Ender's Game vibes. It's a bit of a been there, it was done better before feeling.

I, too, was saddened and surprised by the loss within the flight. I had been hoping for more to develop with the character of Morningtide since Spensa had so badly mischaracterized her initially.

One silly thing I do like about the book is Doomslug. I'm starting to realize maybe I'm a sucker for cute, small sidekicks. :)

Carolyn F. I love Doomslug. It's funny how she had never seen anything like him before when he's native to the planet.

I never read Ender's Game so I didn't have that to bother me.

While it's not just about this, much of Ender's Game takes place in Battle School, and the students are all quite young (younger, I think, than even Spensa and her classmates.) There's a lot of simulated flying and combat practice.
