Don't start over! My sis has so many drafts of different ways one story could go, so that's something you could do if ya don't like what you wrote. But DON'T get rid of what you wrote, who knows it could have really good parts that you can keep and use later. Or just sit down and write, then have someone else read it before you decide to change anything. And remember it's just the first draft, it's not supposed to be prefect.

Hope this makes any sense and is somewhat helpful.
I'm down with being the person to read what you wrote if ya want. Just PM me if it's something you want to do :)

Jace (jace_is_reading) I feel myself slowly slipping into writers block....or oblivion, one of the two. :|

It's like I'm just writing in a haze. WHY CHAPTER FOUR WHY???

message 161: by ATheReader (new)

ATheReader (athereaderofbooks) I haven't written in more than a week. Whoops

message 162: by Jace (new)

Jace (jace_is_reading) I'm fine when I'm writing something else in this story, but for some reason I can't seem to get through writing chapter four.

message 163: by Brooke (new)

Brooke W (thereadersgame) | 26 comments I haven't had time to write too much and I'm frustrated because I have so many ideas!!

Aja, I would recommend just picking a favorite book off of your shelf and read your favorite part. What do you like about it? Look for new words and synonyms. Reread what you have of your whole story so far, even if you know every word by heart.

Jace (jace_is_reading) I found out what my block was!!

I stared writing what would be the end of the chapter and that went well. But then I read the first part of the chapter and realized that what I was trying to write as the next part of the chapter {cause there's a bit of a time jump} wasn't working. So I'm using what I just wrote and taking out the part that doesn't work. :)

I FINISHED CHAPTER FOUR!!!

CONGRATS AJA!!!

I carry a little notebook in my purse, just in case. More often than not my best ideas come to me when I'm at work and can't just sit down. So I write the ideas down in my little 'work' book and play the idea through my head.

There is something to giving yourself a diversion. Trying to figure something out, you end up with some sort of mental gridlock. "Overthinking." A diversion loosens the mental tangle.

Jace (jace_is_reading) Hi, this is me on a hype from finishing chapter five and not wanting to add stuff to the beginning to chapter six so it makes sense.

message 170: by Jace (new)

Jace (jace_is_reading) Ahhh why is this so hard???? I finished six but it's on to seven and I have little of that thing you call "motivation" help?

Brooke W (thereadersgame) | 26 comments Aja, I'd encourage you to just keep writing! I'm having trouble with my second draft and I have to tell myself to keep going. I've read your writing, it's incredible, it nearly brought me to tears, my emotions just- you have a talent Aja! It's hard because nothing worth something is easy(someone wise said that). You can do this! Just keep going!

Hi Mike!

So true. I heard one writer say, "the water won't flow til the tap's turned on."

No one who wants to become an Olympic athlete runs at top speed the first time, or does their best at gymnastic routine. There are gonna be screw ups. Falls, trips. "The first draft of anything is crap". ~Ernest Hemmingway~ Just get started, and it will improve as you go.

"There are two things writers need to do; read a lot and write a lot." ~Stephen King

The thing to do is NOT read what you wrote right away. Give yourself some breathing room. When you're writing, you're all stoked up and your inner critic is on the job. As soon as you write something, put it aside for a bit. A week or even long enough to let yourself forget YOU wrote it. That way, you can look at it with a reader's eyes.

What was your motivation for starting the project in the first place? When I hit a low point, that's where I go to refuel.

When life gets to be a real jumble, the WHY of starting a project is what keeps me returning to it. IF you don't have a personal motivation for starting a story, apart from wanting it to sell, it's dead in the water.

ALWAYS have a personal, PASSION reason for writing. Know why you started or you'll have no reason to finish.

message 184: by Mike (new)

Mike Ssendikwanawa (andmike) | 3 comments Very TRUE!
When you Know your WHY? You will Always find HOW? to Accomplish something Nomatter the Hindrances Amidst!!!
So Focus on WHY? And Ensure that its STRONG ENOUGH! To Keep You Motivated!

Exactly, because your reason(s) for writing a particular story have to be yours.
I recall some time back, when I was writing soap opera fan fiction, everyone wanted me to write Robert and Holly (General Hospital) stories and I just wasn't into it. I had characters I liked better but the Robert and Holly crowd just kept pleading with me to continue with their tales of romance and betrayal. I wrote the stories but my heart wasn't in it.

Write YOUR passion project and you'll always have the motivation to finish. If you want to be a voice for a cause, tell that story. Do you have a new direction for an old trope, work it!

jenann (jenannisreadingrightnow) | 1 comments When you guys first start writing do you place a word count??

message 187: by B (new)

B | 1 comments I don’t. I just write how much i think is needed for the story. If I put a word count it pressurises me and hinders my creativity. :(

What about everyone else? :)
