Aspiring Writers discussion
i am an asparagus casserole and i need motivation.

I am a proud asparagus casserole. I wrote more than six words. Make it through, you'll be proud- especially once you finish conquering the first draft :)

I'm also proud of you! :)

And now I don't know how to start the next chapter"

I have the prologue, chapters 1 and 2, half of chapter 4, and most of chapter 6, done. Chapters 3 and 5 are plotted tho.

The key motivation is what got you writing the story in the first place. That should keep you going. Read what you have written so far and that might remind you of why you started the story.

i'm in desperate need of answers :(

Thanks!

It might help to just leave what you're writting alone for a bit if you really feel like deleteing it. But in my opion I think you just got to push all other thoughts aside and write. It's just a draft not the finished thing, you can always change it later if you still don't like it. :)

"Keep going, even if it feels like you're just shoveling s**t from a sitting position." ~Stephen King~
Don't let that pesky inner critic keep you from getting it done or you'll spend the rest of your life wondering how it turned out. As my boss would say, "Get 'er done." ESPECIALLY if you have a strong motivation for why you started in the first place. Some days, my reason I started my project is the only thing that gets my butt in the desk chair. Remember why you started and that will help you finish.

ahh this was strangely reassuring, sometimes i feel like what i write has to be perfect - i can't stand the loose ends and those awkward sentences that don't flow quite right... but indeed i have to push all thoughts aside!! thank you for your advice friend!! do you have to deal with that inner critic often?

ahh dear this was so kind of you to say!! thank you for these encouraging works!! i'll cherish that quote, it's exactly the energy i need right now :DD
and your boss sounds awesome omg 'get 'er done' YES
"remember why you started and that will help you finish" ah i love it, thank you my friend!! if i may ask, what were your reasons to start writing? and to everyone reading this perhaps, i'd love to know!!!! but i get that it might be personal, so dont worry about answering if you dont want to!!
NEVER try for perfection. You're just setting yourself up for failure.
First off, the first draft of anything is 💩
It's just you, getting the story out of your head and onto paper and a document page. A magazine editor once told a group of us, "Spill your guts. THEN clean it up."
Once the story is in the notebook or the document page, you can read it over and see what you need to fix. First, though, give yourself a month after getting the first draft (completed) onto your page.
You'll have some time to forget it. Then, when you come back to it, you'll be looking at the story as a reader.
Hope that helped some. I got the same advice when I was getting frustrated; wanting to just write it and, Voila, get it published. I was in grade five back then. My love for writing was kindled when a short story I wrote for a class was published in the school paper. I figured everything would be so easy.
The blind optimism of youth.
Keep that first draft. That way, when you're finished, you can see how far you came.

yes, after you finish, editing might seem really daunting, but i like to tell myself that i need to give my story the writing it deserves, no matter how many drafts i'll need to go through:)

haha i had the same reaction when i started up a new document for the 6th time 😫 it's painful, but i am a pantser so my first couple of drafts tend to be huge messes with only a semblance of plot. at least it's fun to compare my latest work to what i have now!
my first draft was absolutely horrifying...even i hate opening the doc. but hey, if i could get through months of this dreaded editing/rewriting phase, i'm sure y'all can get through it too!

I'm a panster too :) I will persevere, but I need to wait for another few days so my mind is ✨fresh✨

You're welcome!
Yes, my inner self is a b****. I usually end up not writing and listening to sad/depressing/angry music. But I learned that just listening to music drowns out both the world and my inner thoughts, so I take what I'm feeling and I put into what I'm writing. I tell myself that this is why I haven't punched a wall yet.

i'm in desperate need..."
I think I would LOVE to read your writing. (When you actually write instead of listening to music... ehhehe)

I agree with Aja, DO NOT LISTEN TO THE INNER EDITOR. I do sometimes, but music definitely helps a lot. Sometimes just getting everything out with a pencil and paper helps. Then, convert it to a computer and the edits just click and I insert them.

✨motivation✨
So here I am.
So I try to write but there is no motivation even though I have PLANNED OUT EVERY SINGLE DETAIL THERE COULD EVER BE
So then I manage to write a little but after I get to a few thousand words I read what I wrote and I'm like "welp, this sucks" and restart. I have done this SO MANY TIMES and I don't know how to get past this one part . . .
As Yumiko put it, I'm an Asparagus Casserole.
