Query abandoned by poster > ABANDONED. Book in a Reader's Digest Condensed Book (?). Man travels to island/tropics, talent for imitating people's voices, pretends to be other people on the radio. Possibly island/war related. Retro illustrations. Probably from 1960s-1980s.

McKayla Csr | 1 comments I used to have a lot of old Reader's Digest Condensed growing up. I really think it's not the 90's on, probably 60s-80s. The pictures were very retro looking. I remember there was a book in one of the condensed that was about a man who travels to an island or somewhere in the tropics, and he had a talent of imitating other people's voices and other characters used that somehow. He would get on the radio and pretend to be other people. I think one of the people he pretended to be was actually dead. There was also a girl and an implied sex scene, where the main character talks about it felling like Krakatoa erupted. There were pictures, one of him using a radio and falling out of a chair, and another of him standing with the girl. I think maybe it was war or military related or maybe he was just a journalist. I remember there were locals and they were trying to get something. I'm sorry, I was young when I read it and not a lot sticks out. Thank you so much, I have looked everywhere

Becca (beccalikesbooks) | 5548 comments Apologies if you've already tried this, but have you looked at a complete list of Reader's Digest Condensed Books? After 1997 they were rebranded as Reader's Digest Select Editions - you think the book was from before the 90s but mentioning it just in case.

If none of the titles / authors jump out at you when browsing through, you could try looking up each title individually to see the blurb / synopsis. It will take a bit of time but at least it's a finite list you can work through methodically.
