Jo Elliott | 1838 comments I'm putting this up a tad early, but I won't be properly talking about the books until next year, I just wanted to share the books that Twitter has chosen for me here at the same time as on my blog (I'll be doing that list tomorrow). It's exactly the same as last year's challenge, I've had Twitter pick 12 books off my TBR (well 11, I chose one) and I'm going to read them over the course of next year. All the books are backlist books, so basically nothing released in 2021, there are some releases from this year on here, but by next year, they're technically "backlist".

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments Here's what I will be reading for this challenge in 2021:

January- A Court of Wings and Ruin (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3) by Sarah J. Maas

February- The Silvered Serpents (The Gilded Wolves, #2) by Roshani Chokshi

March- Where Dreams Descend (Kingdom of Cards, #1) by Janella Angeles

April- Scarlet (Scarlet, #1) by A.C. Gaughen

May- The Unbound (The Archived, #2) by Victoria Schwab

June- Dreams of Gods and Monsters (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #3) by Laini Taylor

July- The Last Magician (The Last Magician, #1) by Lisa Maxwell

August- Song of the Current (Song of the Current, #1) by Sarah Tolcser

September- Children of Icarus by Caighlan Smith

October- The Near Witch (The Near Witch, #1) by Victoria Schwab

November- Forest of a Thousand Lanterns (Rise of the Empress, #1) by Julie C. Dao

December- Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

I'll keep this thread updated with my thoughts throughout the year! Some of my favourite books of last year came from this challenge, so I'm hoping next year's challenge brings some new favourites as well!

Oh! Ill read A Court of Wings and Ruin with you in January!!!

You have some books I am quite interested in on your challenge this year. So you may have more buddy read offers. Hope they are amazing!

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments Cool, sounds like a plan! I need to catch up with the series before the fourth book comes out, so I'll be reading that and the novella in January. That's cool, I like doing buddy reads! Thanks, I hope so too :)

I'll probably join you for the novella too. I have both on audio

I'm planning on ordering the Illumicrate mini-box for it coz they're doing book sleves for the full series that match. I was like... yes please haha

message 13: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments Ha ha they know how to get us! I think I'm going to get the audiobook for it, I've realised that I consume longer books so much better in audio and I don't really love the cover for the new one, so I don't really mind not having it for my collection.

I try really hard to listen to audiobooks but my current listen I've been listening to it for 4 months haha. I'm just not an audio person I don't think.

message 15: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments That's fair enough, we all read differently! I like audio when I'm reading anyway, I often listen to music or podcasts as I read, so audiobooks work quite well for me because I already relate audio to reading quite a lot if that makes sense?

Brittany | 6445 comments Mod
Makes total sense Jo and I'm the same way!

Also absolutely to a buddy read of the new one. As long as you can wait a couple months. I listen to them and with them being such long audios I need breaks between!

message 17: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments Glad I'm not the only one! Yeah that's absolutely fine Brittany, I'm going to listen to it as well and I have other audios planned as my next listens!

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments Have started The Silvered Serpents (The Gilded Wolves, #2) by Roshani Chokshi , I wanted to finish A Court of Wings and Ruin (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3) by Sarah J. Maas by the end of January, but it's SO LONG and I started it with only two weeks to go, so I'm putting it aside for now and coming back to it later.

message 19: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments I finally finished The Silvered Serpents (The Gilded Wolves, #2) by Roshani Chokshi , this year has been off to a slow start, I think I'm still feeling kind of slumpy from the end of last year tbh. Anyway, I enjoyed it, not as much as the first book in the series, it's a bit of a slow starter but I love the characters and once it got going it was really exciting.
(view spoiler)

message 20: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments I've been feeling very slumpy since the beginning of this year and my friend suggested trying some shorter books as what I've been reading so far has been quite dense fantasy so I've switched out Where Dreams Descend (Kingdom of Cards, #1) by Janella Angeles for now for The Unbound (The Archived, #2) by Victoria Schwab as I love VE Schwab and it's a shorter book, so I'm hoping that it will help get me out of my slump!

Totally agree with your friend! Read some shorter ones to try and break out of the slump

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments Laura ☾ wrote: "Ooh I liked the Archived series!"

I enjoyed the first book but have been putting the second one off for ages because I knew it was originally meant to be a trilogy and I didn't want to be frustrated at an unfinished ending. However I know it's going to be a while before VE Schwab gets the third one out there (she has expressed that she'd like to and I'm sure now that's she's so successful her publisher would probably let her do it) so I didn't figure it was worth waiting longer!

Hopefully it works! The unfortunate part of fantasy is that 90% of them are super thick reads!

message 25: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6445 comments Mod
Isn't that the truth Jo! I'd love to read more true fantasy instead of offshoots of it but they are just so large!

message 26: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments I feel that, have definitely been put off reading a lot of epic fantasy because of size!

message 27: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments I'm so behind on this challenge! The Unbound (The Archived, #2) by Victoria Schwab took me FOREVER to read, so I'm now two books behind where I was meant to be because I was reading it through all of April and May. I'm going to try and catch up as much as my reading slump allows, but I'm taking a short break to read Beloved (Beloved Trilogy, #1) by Toni Morrison as I borrowed it from a friend last year and need to get it back to her! Hopefully it won't take me as long as The Unbound did and then I can try to get back on track with my challenge reads.
