R | 4 comments My friend read this book in 2016. If it helps any, they checked it out at a library in Multnomah County in Portland, OR, but doesn't remember which library it was and hasn't been able to find it on the website.

Scientists and people in the military were staying on this planet to study it for future terraforming plans. There could have been cities or colonies on this planet with people completely unaffiliated but my friend doesn't remember and all of the main characters were either a member of the military or a scientist. The military was there to help protect the scientists from the dangerous wildlife by shooting them with their futuristic space guns.
The characters have to leave the safety of the colony/city/whatever they're staying in to escape something that starts attacking them, possibly against the wishes of their government back on Earth.
There's a group of scientists led by a woman military leader who gets separated later somehow. She ends up losing an eye. There is also a morally gray/antihero type scientist who discovers telepathic gryphons who show him things, possibly while he is naked. (???) He befriends them and is psychically linked to them. (????)
The planet was really dangerous. The things living there would attack them. The gravity was a bit higher than Earth's and the air was technically breathable but not really good for you. The characters have these power suits to help them navigate with the higher gravity but they get abandoned at some point.
The majority of the book was written in third person but every so often there'd be a journal entry kind of chapter from someone's point of view, usually describing the wildlife and stuff.

(view spoiler)

The book was bright red and they think the cover had green army men on it. The title was possibly in yellow text, but they're not entirely sure.
I'm sure they have more details from it because they remember a lot but not enough to find it. Honestly I'm curious to read it too. If anyone can help it'd be appreciated.

R | 4 comments Somehow. Somehow I found it. I scrolled through many pages of the Multnomah County Library catalog. It's called Red Claw.

Anyway, I'm pretty happy. If only I could find the book I'm looking for now.
