No you don't need to read TMI before TID series but there are references to TMI series in TID. Nothing major and TID is actually set before TMI as sort of an origin story for the families in TMI series. I actually found TID series more captivating than the TMI series so I highly recommend reading the series.
you can read TID before TMI. It's totally okay. I also read TID before TMI and i didn't feel like I'm missing something.
It is totally fine to go into TID without reading TMI and you will understand it, but after that if you plan on reading TDA you will have to read TMI.It is like TID is the starter for The Last Hours series
and TMI is the starter for the TDA series.
It's fine to read them both in any order... that said, TID may spoil some of the things in TMI, if you plan to read it later. Brother Zachariah and Will Herondale are mentioned quite a few times in TMI, and are integral to TID's plot... But if you don't plan to read TMI, it's totally fine to start with TID, it won't harm your understanding of the series at all if you haven't read Mortal Instruments. And there is the fact that TID is much more intricate and captivating than TMI, so yes :)
You can definitely read TID before TMI. I actually like it better than TMI.It's better written, and I'm really excited that they're making a movie.
I read Mortal instruments and then the Infernal Devices and it went pretty good. But I'd prefer I went with TID and then TMI because you get the kind of "introduction" to the world there. In TMI, you just five into the world. You've gotta figure out what the setting of world is eventually. But in TID, they explain the world in words. But honestly, it doesn't matter what you start with(but don't start with TDA first. Finish TMI then go with TDA as you could get idea about Emma and Jules). You're gonna love it anyway.
I would start with the infernal devices and then mortal instruments. It does, after all, happen first in the timeline :)
You don’t have to, but i feel like u should read TMI first. The best way to read the series is the way the books were published.
No. But if you want to read TMI before TID, it's fine too. But I prefer you read TID first because it's the prequel of TMI.
I feel that it doesn’t really matter what order you read the books. I started reading the mortal instruments first and then read the TID and it really did not affect the series. TID is completely different from TMI, and they have different characters to. Because Cassandra Clare also wrote a new series (The dark artifices), I recommend that after you read the mortal instruments you read this series because the last book in TMI relates to the main character in the dark artifices.
Thanks for this post because I was also interested and we’re probably not the only ones. I might have to start with TID because I was struggling with TMI but perhaps I’m just too old lol. Either way, I prefer reading in chronological order now I know for definite what comes first and heard good stuff about TID anyway
TID is one of my favourite series and definitely my favourite by Cassandra Clare! You can read TID before TMI if you do plan on reading TMI at some point TID will spoil a couple things but nothing major. As many people have already said, if you want to read TDA then you do have to read TMI

I feel you because I was also struggling with TMI, but I heard so many good comments about TDI that I think I would like it a lot more. From what I can tell by the people answering me, it's okay to read TDI without reading TMI first, so I think I'm gonna give it a try!
I read TMI first but definitely agree that TID can be read first without feeling like you're missing something or don't understand it. TID is written so much better than TMI and an overall better read for so many other reasons, too. I used to love TMI so much but after reading TID, TDA and TLH it's my least favourite series and I do not rate it as much as the others. It still holds a special place in my heart, but (unless you're aged around 12-14) I don't think it's as thrilling or unique a read.
I am currently reading City of Bones 1st book in The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. I am on Chapter 14 /Page 272.catrinlawn@icloud.com
I read and really liked the first book in Tid, so it looks as if I’ll be reading these books in chronological order and hopefully I won’t completely dislike the first Tmi book if I ever return to it. I liked the characters a lot more in The Clockwork Angel than I did in the very little bit of Tmi that I read, plus chronological order just makes more sense to me

I tried to read TMI a few years ago and I just couldn't bring myself to read the whole series. However, I'm interested in reading TID but I've seen some people say that in order to understand it I would have to read The Mortal Instruments first. Is that true? And is it worth it?
