Kirk, I wasn't talking about you. [snicker] Yeah, actually I was. I knew you would want to make Scott feel comfortable in all this estrogen-centric climate. You know we love you. I am delighted with that description of yourself. That is so cool.

Scott and all the others who have joined since I visited this board, welcome!
Scott, I'm especially excited to hear what you think of Pride and Prejudice. I have every hope that you'll love it, but if you don't like it -- or don't like parts of it -- I hope you'll share that too. It's always fun to see a beloved book from another person's fresh perspective.
Speaking of which, you've all probably seen this video before, but in case you haven't, here's a great six-minute clip of critic and scholar Cornel West on Jane Austen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHZGq...

So fellow JAFF reader, Kirk, checked in. There's Stanley Michael Hurd and Jack Caldwell and Mark Brownlow just to mention a few off the top of my head = authors as well as Don Jacobson, C. P. Odom

Welcome!!! Happy reading!(nearly all of Austen is happy reading)
All,Thanks for the kind words, advice, anecdotes and encouragement both here and in my tracker. I've got P&P mentally queued up for my next read as soon as I conclude my current read. I promise not to rush through it. I've only got one reading speed, and it's very slow by design. I'm looking forward to it.

Let me add my voice to the welcoming choir, Scott!
I only discovered Jane Austen after university. In fact, my introduction to JA was watching the Colin Firth/Jennifer Ehle Pride & Prejudice miniseries one Thanksgiving weekend with my grandmother. I was utterly charmed, and picked up the book of P&P shortly thereafter. Reading the original Austen novels & watching the various movie and TV adaptations eventually led me to the world of JAFF - and ultimately to this wonderful group of readers here on Goodreads. We enjoy all things Austen, Austen-related, and even Austen-adjacent here. :-)
Wishing you much pleasure as you nibble and taste your way into P&P and the literary world of Jane Austen!
Hey all!My reading has finally slowed down. LOL
I got the 1st jab a couple weeks ago, had a bad reaction in my back. Which has since gotten worse and I now am suffering from an inflammation of the Femoral nerve. Party time!.
I have been been given so many types of meds, pricked by acupuncture and spent 6 hours in the ER and still no end in sight. *SIGH* Now I look forward to getting the 2nd jab, not knowing what the reaction will be :) Am praying there will not be anything further...
Meanwhile, just trying to take things really slow. Hope you are all having a wonderful Sunday!
So sorry to hear about your reaction, Sam! Back pain affects just about everything one tries to do, doesn’t it? I hope the second jab is kinder.

      Oh, ouch, Sam!
You sure went through the wringer. Wishing you well and hope the pain is relieved by the second dose. :)

Sam, was your variety the Pfizer one? I got the Moderna one and had no reaction but everyone tells me the second dose gives you flu like symptoms for two days. Sorry to hear you had such severe reactions.

Thanks guys!Yes, it is the Pfizer vaccine. I have heard lots of people were affected with ailments their bodies have a weakness for. back pain, migraines, stomach issues. Mine just got complicated.
Oh well. on a good note - Ichelov hospital in TelAviv seems to have come up with a successful treatment for Covid. Gets seriously sick patients well and home in 3 to 5 days! Now that could be awesome!
Sam, adding my well-wishes to the mix! Here's hoping the second-half of February is better than the first half!

That would be awesome - a cure. I have been praying for that.

Hi All. What a great idea to run a JA reading challenge for 2021! I am Mary, joining from Ireland. I am a long-term fan of all of Austen's works, ever since I was a little girl. In the last week or so, I have been delving back into my Austen, which is how I accidentally found this group. I am aiming for 6-10 Austen-related works this year, as part of my overall reading plan for '21. If I manage to read more, I will revise that estimate, but for now that is what I am aiming for.
Happy reading, everyone!
Welcome, Mary-Bridget! You will definitely find plenty of Austen-related and Austen-derived books to choose among here! This is a lively and active group.

Welcome to our neighborhood. The people here are very warm and welcoming and helpful. Enjoy your reading.
We have so many new faces this year joining our little party. YES! We love Austen and welcome any and all who also love Austen. Mary-Bridget, we are so glad you found us and hope you have a great time discussing all things Austen... and perhaps a few other things along the way. Blessings, have fun in the stacks.

Thanks everyone for your kind welcomes! I've already picked up some recommendations from browsing through your reviews. Looking forward to tucking into them this weekend.

Glad you were able to find our fun group and we are so thrilled to have you join us, Mary.
Cheering you on as you delve back into Jane Austen's works and others. :)

Hello everybody! I'm Maria and I'm Italian. I love Jane Austen (of course haha) and Austenesque books. Last year I didn't meet my goal but this year is going very well already. I hope to read 10 books at least. Happy reading everybody!

I didn’t meet my goal last year either, but I always think it’s great to have a goal — and to have this community, which is so supportive, no matter if we reach our reading goals or not! Looking forward to seeing you around the boards, and have fun reading!

Thank you, ladies! I love this group exactly for what you said. I have joined it since its first year and it has always been lovely to share my thoughts and read your opinions. :)

Ciao, Maria, welcome back for another year. No worries on that goal. I didn't meet mine either. Oh, well, we do what we can and that's all that matters. Having a fun place to go where you can talk about your favorite author, fan fiction, and such is priceless. I'd be lost without my Goodreads friends. No one else talks about reading let alone Jane Austen. Good luck with your goal.

Welcome back, Maria!
Woohoo on getting a good start and working toward ten books. :)

  Welcome back, Maria!
Woohoo on getting a good start and working toward ten books. :)
I’m living in Akron Ohio and working my way into retirement this year. I read and loved Jane Austen some time in college (40+ years ago). Like so may others 2020 brought professional and personal troubles. Sometime during The summer my anxiety level was very high and I stopped watching the news and by October stopped watching television completely. I read an article about why people enjoy watching reruns (basically-knowing the end we can relax and enjoy the journey with less anxiety) so I decided to start rereading old favorites, one of which was P&P. And then I discovered my first P&P variation and then discovered the world of fan fiction.
Since then I’ve gone down this rabbit hole of reading just about every P & P variation I can find.
I’m wondering if I might run out.
I’ll make my goal 200 for 2021 even though I’ve almost reached that I think I’ll be slowing down.

You will never run out of JAFF stories. Look up https://austenesquereviews.com/ and look at Meredith's lists....thousands over the years available and that doesn't include the non published ones.

Welcome!!! There's a tiny world of non-P&P JAFF out there too! :)
Adele wrote: " I read an article about why people enjoy watching reruns (basically-knowing the end we can relax and enjoy the journey with less anxiety) ..."Funny you should mention that. I've watched mostly old re-runs on TV for years now. I started because I got rid of cable but now I actually prefer them! They are comforting, just like Jane.

Yay, Adele! Glad your journey from cable to TV to reruns led to re-reading and discovering JAFF. So glad to have you with us and working on the hefty goal of 200. :)

Welcome, Adele! While I'm sorry that this past year has been a difficult one in many ways, I'm so glad that Jane Austen and JAFF could help you find some peace and enjoyment! I'm so impressed with how much you've read already this year! Have fun exploring!

Hello, fellow Janeites! My name is Amanda. I'm a devoted Janeite, but I've been out of the game recently. My reading was restricted to materials that related to work and grad school. I came to love JA's books in college, way back during my undergrad years, when I took an 18th century literature class. After that, I was hooked!
I'm folding my Austen Lovers challenge into my larger 100 book Goodreads challenge for the year. I have eclectic tastes and am part of two non-Austeny book clubs, so I've set myself a manageable 15 book goal.
I look forward to reading with you!
Welcome, we are a friendly group and our reading challenges range high and low but who cares. We just hope you enjoy reading and we will cheer you on. Sometimes you may read a book which we have not read and we thank you for bringing it to our attention, especially if you loved it.

Howdy, Amanda!
We're so glad you found us and got a chance to read non-work related books. Sounds like a doable challenge goal to hit fifteen. We'll be cheering you along the way.

Welcome!
Wow! Look at all the new people that have joined in with our madness... um... love of Jane Austen. LOL! @183: Adele: I hope your retirement progresses well for you. I highly recommend it. The first year is a bit rocky as you adjust to new routines. Your schedule changes, sleep patterns, mode of dress [thank goodness for casual wear], even relaxing with a cuppa [your favorite] is such a blessing. Allow yourself to just unwind. As far as running out of something to read in JAFF... we know you are kidding. Bwahaha!! Just look at any of the threads and you will see loads of stuff to beg, borrow, or steal off the lists being posted. Many of my favorite stories... I found listed on someone's comment. Oops! Not Sorry!!
@191: Amanda: Welcome to our madness... um... our fun. I hope you have a blast. Most of us enjoy a variety of genres so you are in good company. Have fun in the stacks.

Delighted to have you three ladies join us! You've found your way to the BEST group EVER!
We're a diverse group - members of every age, nationality, gender, and interests - but we all share a love of reading JAFF and talking about it together. No-guilt approach to your challenge goals, just encouragement.
The same with participation. Feel free to comment as much or as little as you're comfortable with. I've been largely absent this year because I've just had too many other things going on, but the party always feels like it's still in full swing when I pop back here and we're all part of the "in" crowd. Enjoy!
Hey All,I am happy to have discovered this group! Exactly the group for me :) I am from SoCal and have been loving all things Austen since high school when I discovered Pride and Prejudice. Anyways. I am going to attempt to go all the way to Mr Darcy's Library. Last year, I read over 200 P&P variations just for fun and cause well the Pandemic and there was nothing else to do. So going to attempt to do it again this year. I am already at 95 books.....so definitely making a good dent in my goal and it is only May.
Great and we are here to cheer you on. We do check out how other readers rate stories in their reviews (or just in rating them) so that we can find our own next great story.
