Eva B. Sofia wrote: "I hate when straight authors write about gay characters and then get rich but don't do anything with their money to support gay rights"

Or their gay rep is super stereotypical. Like gay rep written specifically to appeal to straight people who fetishize them.

Yes. Like, can you not? And then real gay authors are passed over.

message 103: by Eva (new)

Eva B. Like, I disagree with the idea that you need to be openly queer to write about queer characters* (since it's not always safe for people to be out) but it's incredibly annoying to see straight authors get famous off of writing queer lit while Ownvoices books are passed over.

*Not that I think that's what you mean or anything, I've just seen it around

I love how this description of Carry On calls it a "lush fantasy"

ahahaha what
it's literally the opposite of lush

I AGREE WITH YOU

ATheReader (athereaderofbooks) | 2746 comments It is extremely stupid that authors profit off of lgbtq+ characters when they are NOT lgbtq+ and don't support the community further than "supporting them" which is THE BARE MINIMUM!

message 107: by eli ♡ (new)

eli ♡ | 469 comments that's ridiculous. I'm not saying a cis, straight author can't write on LGBTQIA+ issues, but if you're going to write about what we deal with, you should at least do something to solve the problem in real life. give money to a charity, go to a rally, something. do something.

yes they SHOULD DO SOMETHING SO THAT PEOPLE CAN BE THEMSELVES

Salma19 (And I Darken stan) | 155 comments I did not enjoy Ninth House. I was into it at first, but it got so BORING. The writing style did not work with the thriller plot line because it did not excite me about what is gonna happen next. It read like a horrible fever dream. I gave it 2 stars instead of one because of the social commentary.

Very good points. It is completely welcome for an author who is not LGBTQ to write a relationship into their book as long as the problems are not solely based on them being lgbtq+, ones that the author hasn't experienced. (The second point you were talking about happened to Becky Albertalli.)

Sofia wrote: "Even if he was just a confused bean, that could have been explained more because he kept making tactless remarks about "being gay" and he never really learned from them so what's the point"

1. because the mage is a fascist and hid every source of information that would help simon figure himself out from him

2. he didn’t grow up with anyone to talk to him about these things

3. and.. i would just like to bring up this moment
penny: gay people have an unfair advantage!
simon: only when it comes to visiting their roommates
so simon was very quick to shut down penny’s idea of gay people being privelaged or some shit

this is not me saying that you can’t not like the book, lmao, we know each other and you know that im not that petty, but im just sayin.

message 119: by [deleted user] (new)
