I did like THG. At least, the first book. I haven't read the others. But I do think it was overhyped. The romance is terrible and the plot is pretty standard.

ATheReader (athereaderofbooks) | 2746 comments Same, I thought THG series was okay but nothing special. (I am disappointed that I bought the series)

can you elaborate on circe? I'm interested in reading it so I just want to hear your thoughts.

I went in with high expectations and I was really disappointed since there was nothing that stood out to me, and there was little that happened in the plot. The whole book just revolved around Circe’s exile and loneliness and that was it. There was literally no plot. I couldn’t connect well with the characters and I found the writing to be incredibly boring. Having said that, I did like the incorporation of Greek mythology, but it wasn’t enough to draw me into the story. The book just wasn’t for me, but you may still enjoy it, so I think you should definetely consider reading it.

Oh nooo. I was really looking forward to that. Maybe I'll still like it...

Did you like her other book? Isn't it called Song of Achilles or something?

message 59: by Amelie (new)

I haven’t read any of her other books, and I don’t plan on reading them anytime soon. You may still like Circe though, I’m probably in the minority of people who didn’t enjoy it...

Salma19 (And I Darken stan) | 155 comments The last two books in the Daevabad trilogy. I never have been THAT salty with a series before... I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Starless Sea either (gave it 3 stars). I agree when people call it substanceless 😅. American Royals was one of my most disappointing books of the year. Comparing it to Gossip Girl was not a good idea....

message 63: by krista ☽✧ (new)

krista ☽✧ (bookishwarriorofhope) | 273 comments I didnt like the remnant chronicles wich a lot of people seem to love , because it also had an insta love triangle and overall just was super boring. It is called a high fantasy but in the first book was no fantasy wich is well not a high fantasy.

message 74: by Eva (new)

Eva B. - The Maze Runner: boring af, and also Teresa was woefully underdeveloped. Please just give someone besides Newt an ounce of personality. Plus there were like 30 boys there and all of them were straight? Sure, James.
- Throne of Glass: I HATED this, I was bored and annoyed the entire time. Celaena was the worst, Dorian was the only saving grace.
- Serpent & Dove: cringe-worthy, and should NOT be considered YA. It was like....laughably bad.
- Fangirl: irritating as hell, not a fan of Cath's fetishization of Simon and Baz or her complete inability to understand what a college-level creative writing class is. Oh no, the teacher won't let you submit your fanfiction in their class? That's what the find-and-replace feature is for, Cather. Jeez.
- A Court of Mist and Fury: boring. Toxic relationship. Godawful character "development". Also should not be considered YA.
- The Afterlife of Holly Chase: I just really didn't like this one. It had a super interesting concept that was squandered for a bland romance. Also the main character was awful, I didn't care about her even after her development.
- All the Bright Places: incredibly harmful depictions of mental health, and basically just The Fault In Our Stars but with mental illness instead of cancer.
- Bloom: I HATED the main character, and the main romance was awful. I'm sorry, but (view spoiler)

message 75: by Eva (new)

Eva B. Oh, and also The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein: really butchered the multifaceted characterization of the original novel for a Victor Bad Monster Good retelling. Which is fine, I guess, but it felt like Victor's complexity was erased and he became an almost unintentionally comedic version of what thriller writers think sociopaths are. It would've been far more interesting to see a Victor who followed his original interpretation more closely interacting with a much more gray Elizabeth. Also Clerval was handled really badly, I hate how whenever he's included in retelling he's regulated to a plot device and used just to make drama by having some forbidden love for Elizabeth. It's such an unnecessary addition that has no basis in the book; in fact I would argue that romantic tension between Clerval and Victor has much, much more canonical basis but nope! Gotta have the hetero love triangle I guess.

message 76: by ATheReader (new)

ATheReader (athereaderofbooks) | 2746 comments I LOVE your paragraph on why you didn't like The Dark Descent. I think I can determine that you don't love popular books..

message 77: by Eva (new)

Eva B. Thank you! I do love some popular books, but a lot of others fall flat for me. I think I build the hype up too much for myself and then usually get let down.

message 78: by ATheReader (new)

ATheReader (athereaderofbooks) | 2746 comments Of course! I think that is a common occurrence for people. A lot of people hype up a book and then you read it and are confused as to why so many people love it. It has happened to me a sad amount of times (I really need to stop doing that to myself).

The rep is bad. Simon's bisexuality was completely erased. I was very unhappy with how that was handled.

Eva B. Sofia wrote: "The rep is bad. Simon's bisexuality was completely erased. I was very unhappy with how that was handled."

That's what I'd heard, and also that there were some homophobic comments made towards lesbian characters (don't remember the exact words, but I know I've seen some quote in regards to Ebb that was pretty bad)

message 87: by Eva (new)

Eva B. Also my biggest experience with Carry On was a former classmate who was one of those "uwu my gaybies!! I'm reading ~sin~" straight girls, and she LOVED it and that really turned me off of the book for a while.

I'm really unhappy with the depiction of LGBTQ+ relationships in general in regards to fantasy because I feel like everyone is always an extreme. They're either gay or lesbian and nothing exists in the middle because that would mean they're not gay. Which is false. And it upsets me.

message 90: by Sofia, duckish things (new)

Sofia (sofloaf) | 3116 comments Mod
Carry On was just a stain on the gay book reputation ugh I would like to erase it from my memory

message 91: by Eva (new)

Eva B. I'd really like to see more arospec and acespec characters in fantasy, as well as more trans/nonbinary/genderfluid/etc. ones.

message 92: by Sofia, duckish things (new)

Sofia (sofloaf) | 3116 comments Mod
Yes exactly. The rep in general is getting better, but it's mostly gay stuff and sometimes lesbian stuff and nothing else, which aggravates me. You can't have good rep if you're only portraying one part of it smh

Even if he was just a confused bean, that could have been explained more because he kept making tactless remarks about "being gay" and he never really learned from them so what's the point

It was super awkward, especially since I think she thought I was straight too? Which I'm not lol
