Hunger Games 1: Chromophobia

The Circle
Caleb jerked awake and stood up. He looked around wildy for Connall, but he wasn't there. Where... Caleb checked his shoulder, which had entirely healed. It still ached like crazy, but it was fine. He was in some sort of stone room, and- "AH!" He fell backward when he spotted the rabbits, and then froze. They were just... rabbits. He looked around again and noticed the knives lying on the ground beside him. "Okay..." He muttered, and reached out to pick them up. However, the second they were in his hands, the rabbits attacked.
And they breathed fire.
Fun.
And they breathed fire.
Fun.

The crocodile stayed completely still, watching him. As soon as he touched that mace, it would attack, but there was no way for Jaspur to know that. The small baby crocodiles started running around the area, tackling each other and messing around. They didn't seem to be hostile, but the big one was another story.
Caleb yelped as he dodged another bolt of fire. He had received some nasty burns already. The boy from District Three lunged towards one of the five rabbits, managing to stab it with his knives and kill it, but the other four kept coming. He slashed at another one and just barely missed it.
Connall stumbled up, his mind still black and blank from teleporting. His shoulder still aching from holding up Caleb.
Caleb.
Where was he?
"Caleb!" Connall yelled, his voice nearly drowned out. Wait, drowned out by what?
He finally located where that buzzing was coming from. Green-gold eyes tracked up slowly, landing on...a dragonfly? But considering its size and agitation, it was much more dangerous than those pretty water insects.
Connall whirled, searching for his bow, and found the short sword. Shit. "This is it, then," he muttered, his fingers closing on the hilt.
This is it.
Caleb.

Jaspur walked over to the mace and picked it up, feeling its weight. Jesus f*cking christ, this is heavy! How the hell am I supposed to do this?! He glanced at the large crocodile. It had METAL F*CKING SCALES! There was no way a mace was gonna do anything to that!
As soon as Connall's hands touched the sword, the dragonfly bolted towards him. It opened its mouth and revealed a set of very sharp teeth.
The crocodile roared and charged towards Jaspur. It was slow and heavy, but still very intimidating, and the glow of its scales was slowly becoming more obvious.

(I didn't know dragonflies had mouths LMAO)
Caleb sliced at another one of the rabbits, killing it, before another one blew a burst of flames at his face. He almost ducked in time, but it scorched his eyes, and suddenly everything was blurry. He could barely see, but he swung wildly and managed to stab another one. The final two were attacking quicker now.

The mace made a small dent in the creature's scales, but not nearly enough to stop it. It roared again and lunged towards him, mouth wide open.

((They do because they have to eat lmao))

Jaspur tried to dodge but his arm was caught in its mouth. He cried out in agony as his arm was impaled and burned at the same time. He managed to rip his arm away, but it was a mess of burned flesh and hanging pieces of ripped skin. Blood dripped down his arm.
The crocodile growled at him and charged again, this time aiming to pin him against the wall. However, as it twisted around, it revealed a small weak spot of unprotected flesh right at the base of its neck.

The crocodile howled in pain and then slumped to the ground, dead. A bell dinged, and the walls surrounding Jaspur's slice sank into the ground, revealing Caleb on one side, fighting the fire rabbits, and Scarlette on the other, fighting the pelican-shark.

Caleb sliced at the last two rabbits, managing to kill them both, as the wall to his right opened and revealed Jaspur. Another bell dinged, and the wall to his right sank into the ground, revealing Connall fighting the dragonfly. Caleb was badly injured and could barely stand up, and he collapsed on the ground.
Connall ducked, his speed carrying him under the dragonfly. He slashed the sword at it, knowing his grip was wrong, his stance was off - he couldn't fight with this. "Shit!" he yelped, rolling away from it again and stabbing. Those teeth were not good news.
The ground shook as Caleb's part of the circle closed. Connall turned, expecting more mutts or something to fly from the walls, but...
"Caleb!"
He screamed, seeing him burnt and wounded.
The dragonfly saw its prey distracted.

The dragonfly saw its prey distracted.
The dragonfly screeched as Connall's sword sank into its flesh. It saw the tribute distracted and charged forwards, pinning him to the walla and lunging at his face.
Caleb heard Connall shout his name. He glanced over at him, vision slowly starting to clear. No! Caleb saw the dragonfly pinning Connall to the wall, and then noticed something. "There's a weak spot! Right between the wings!" He yelled. He had to help Connall. Had to save him somehow.... but he couldn't even stand up.
Connall screamed, tearing out of the insect's grasp and flattening himself on the ground. His arms stung, the dragonfly's legs having gashed them as he ducked - but his face hurt the most. The insect had gouged out most of his right cheek.
The sword clattered onto the ground. He rolled and scooped it up again, barely able to stand. He was bleeding badly, barely able to see out of his right eye.

Caleb's eyes widened, and he tried to get up. He had to save Connall, ignore the pain. He wasn't going to survive, he knew that. He was already dying. But he needed to help Connall. He fell to the ground again and yelped.
((Wooooo my writing is shitty today eheheheheh))

A low, wounded sound escaped from Connall's mouth. He couldn't talk. His eyes fixed on Caleb. He had to fight for Caleb.
He held up the sword between both hands, shaking slightly. He was going to die. He knew he was going to die.
He slammed the sword between the dragonfly's wings, one of its legs stabbing through his side.

The dragonfly screeched and fell to the ground, dead. The wall to Connall's left opened, Noelle on the other side.
Caleb slowly crawled over to Connall. He leaned against the wall of the Circle, wincing. "You did it." He murmured quietly. He was dying, he wasn't going to make it out alive. He rested his head on Connall's shoulder gently and looked him in the eyes. "Try to win for me, okay?" He said.

Connall stared back at Caleb, squeezing his hand. He couldn't do anything anymore. He wasn't going to make it out either.
So he just held Caleb's hand, bleeding from his side, his face, his arms. He just sat with the other boy silently.

((XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD))
Caleb smiled slightly and looked back up at him before closing his eyes. "I guess I'll see you in the stars, then." He whispered, and then life faded from him. A cannon shot rang out across the circle.

Noelle landed in the circle, looking with disgust at the mace in her hands. The snake slithered towards her, and she jumped back. Looking at Caleb's body, her heart froze. "Dammit. They're going to kill us off one by one. Scarlette. I need to make sure she stays alive." She muttered to herself, backing away as she snake advanced.
Tears streaked down Connall's ruined face, saltwater stinging the gaping wound in his cheek. It hurt. A lot.
Was he hurting?
He couldn't tell.
Why was he crying?
He was about to die.
Caleb's death didn't hurt. It only hurt because, for that space of time as Connall sat bleeding out, they were separated. His wounds hurt, but for the first time he didn't feel the pain.
He was supposed to win.
Well, he was supposed to be straight, too.
Shame.
Connall smiled as well as he could. Not the arrogant smirk or sarcastic grin he always put on like armor. A real, satisfied smile. And for the first and last time in his life, Connall went after what he loved.
Cannon shot.

(ugh I don't know whether to laugh, cry or break down)
Noelle's lips twisted into a small smile - not happy at all, but full of cold. Connall and Caleb had found happiness. She only wished the same for her and Scarlette. There could only be on Victor. Live or die. Maybe...maybe I'll get back to Selene. Mara and Lilith. Crimson and Melantha. But...at what price? The snake slithered towards her, and she didn't raise her mace. Instead, she stood there silently, hands clenched. Not willing to let it rip her apart just yet. But at the same time, letting it come.

Scarlette - (view spoiler)[Mutt: A large pelican creature with razor sharp teeth, about the size of a lion. Weapon: A long wooden spear. (hide spoiler)]
Connall - (view spoiler)[Mutt: A giant carnivorous dragonfly, about the size of a small car. Weapon: A steel shortsword. (hide spoiler)]
Noelle - (view spoiler)[Mutt: A coiled rattlesnake with a scorpion's stinger at the end of its tail. Coiled up, it looks normal-sized, but it's actually extremely long. Weapon: I couldn't find any weapons that she's weak with so guess what, she's got a mace. (hide spoiler)]
Jaspur - (view spoiler)[Mutt: A large crocodile with metal scales and razor-sharp teeth. Its scales have a slightly red glow to them, and touching them will leave a nasty burn. There's also two smaller, harmless ones running around, probably the big one's children. Weapon: Again, I couldn't find a weapon he was weak with, so he's got a mace too. (hide spoiler)]
Caleb - (view spoiler)[Mutt: A bunch of baby bunnies that seem harmless but actually breathe fire. Weapon: A pair of knives. (hide spoiler)]
