SarahC (sarahcarmack) | 1418 comments No, Everyman would be retaliating to your message 662. Of course, the idea of tossing in condensed books at the sale next year is a funny thought. But who would really suffer? More poor readers like ourselves :( So we wont blame the book sale, just those slightly disguised editions (or in my story, fully disguised).

Everyman, lol.

Linda2 They're still around, Sarah, under a new name:

Well that is very interesting. I suppose we could go to the RD site and see what they look like (covers). I also wonder how much they cost. Did those look like mostly U.S. authors to you? I wonder how they pick the titles they condense? or now "selectively edit" I guess :)

message 656: by Linda2 (new)

Linda2 Not interested enough to explore it. Looks like they choose bestsellers, light fare.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 604 comments That's what they looked like to me as well.

message 658: by Malcolm (new)

Malcolm Esquire (MalcolmEsq) | 344 comments Perhaps someone can help me. Earlier in the year I read a short story online. It was Victorian (I love 19th cent literature) but unfortunately I can't rember its title or author.

It concerns the daughter of a solicitor who becomes implicated in a murder for which the family gardener becomes accused. She has to resort to asking the help of a solicitor MP, who years before she rejected his offer of marriage.

Has anyone else read it? If so, can you recall the title and author?

message 659: by LauraT (new)

LauraT (laurata) | 493 comments I don't know it, but I like the plot! I'll write it down when someone will tell us who wrote it!!!!
Do you know Anne Perry's detective stories?

message 660: by Linda2 (new)

Linda2 Let's see, a solicitor is a lawyer? an MP is a Member of Parliament?

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) | 736 comments Yes that's right, Rochelle.

I like the sound of that plot also - hope you remember who it's by as I'd love to read it.

No, never heard of Anne Perry

message 663: by Malcolm (new)

Malcolm Esquire (MalcolmEsq) | 344 comments It's a good story. I rember at the time being in the mood for Mary Braddon and Ellen Wood. It was closer in style to Braddon.

message 664: by Malcolm (new)

Malcolm Esquire (MalcolmEsq) | 344 comments I've just checked out the official Anne Perry site. There's an astonishing number of titles. They obviously pander to a public taste. I might give the first of the Pitt and Monk series a glance. I must try to get over my aversion to teams of writers. If they are good yarns what the hell? What would you say of the literary style of the series?

How do they compare to Sarah Waters' style?

message 665: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) That sounds like an Agatha Christie mystery to me.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) | 736 comments Just popping on to say Merry Christmas everyone ☺ I'm away for a week now so I hope you all have wonderful holidays and may Santa visit you all with book-shaped packages a-plenty ☺

message 667: by Linda2 (new)

Linda2 You're not wearing your Santa socks. :(

message 668: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) I can't seem to put on my Santa hat, either!

message 669: by Linda2 (new)

Linda2 Send me your email again, and I'll send instructions, but only for Windows. I don't know Mac.

message 670: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) As you can see by the earlier postings, we managed to get the santa hat, now the best part will be taking it off, I may not do that.

message 671: by Linda2 (new)

Linda2 Good, a very handsome bird. When ready to switch, go back into your photos, choose the old one, and click "Make profile photo." Your Christmas one will still be there for next year.

message 672: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) Thanks so much, Rochelle. She did it so fast, I can't remember what she did, youngun's . sigh. . .

message 673: by Linda2 (new)

Linda2 Too bad the avatars are so tiny here, only 26 x 33 px. On other forums I have a generous 100 x 100 or 80 x 80 to play with.

message 674: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) Wow, I wish they could do that here, not much to work with my teensy birdy head. Thanks.

message 675: by Linda2 (new)

Linda2 I worked with your original image, which is 111 x 127.

message 676: by Everyman (new)

Everyman | 2507 comments Rochelle wrote: "You're not wearing your Santa socks. :("

I didn't have Santa socks, but my daughters did borrow a Santa Suit and dress me up in it for pictures of the grandkids with Santa.

And no, I am NOT posting copies on the Internet anywhere. You'll just have to use your most vivid imaginations.

message 677: by Linda2 (last edited Dec 23, 2010 11:32AM) (new)

Linda2 I meant Boof. I Christmasized his avatar.

I only read a couple of sir Pitt's books. I like misteries, Agatha Christie stile. Nice relaxing books, nothing more, but no less!!!

message 682: by Malcolm (new)

Malcolm Esquire (MalcolmEsq) | 344 comments Thanks. They don't really sound like my cup of tea. Perhaps equating them to Agatha Christie is doing them an injustice? However, I might give one a glance in the summer.

message 683: by Everyman (new)

Everyman | 2507 comments Rochelle wrote: "Wanna Santa hat, Eman?"

Thanks, but I already did the whole Santa bit, suit, hat, beard, and all, and I think that was enough.

message 684: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) Everyman, Rochelle means she can put one on your avatar for you, much like she has on her ears, and me on my bird head. Just for the holidays, and you can put your usual avatar back after the holidays.

Thanks, yes, I realized that, but even my avatar has had enough Santaing for one Christmas!

message 686: by Linda2 (new)

Linda2 Are you having the kids and grandkids over today, Eman?

message 687: by Everyman (new)

Everyman | 2507 comments Are you having the kids and grandkids over today, Eman?

Since over means that they walk down the driveway from their house to our house, that's a definite absolutely!

Actually, they came down last night to here and we opened our presents on Christmas eve and had a Christmas eve dinner together, then this morning they came down for breakfast and our stockings (which in our family are extensive), then we all went up to their house where they opened their stockings and presents (if we try to do everybody all at once it simply takes way too long and wears out everybody's patience), then they came down here for Christmas dinner and games. So the answer is absolutely!

Everyman | 2507 comments Is anybody else finding the site operating a bit weirdly today? When I reply to a post it doesn't start with the poster and first few lines of a message I replied to. Then when I posted a message it dumped me back out to the Groups menu. Strange. Anybody else having this or another weird experience?

message 689: by Linda2 (new)

Linda2 Everyman wrote: "Is anybody else finding the site operating a bit weirdly today?..."

Test reply.

message 690: by Linda2 (new)

Linda2 I think it's fixed. Never as bad as the software at that other place.

message 691: by Everyman (new)

Everyman | 2507 comments Not fixed for me. I just hit reply to your post and got a blank comment box.

edit: and when I hit post, it went back up to the Groups menu.

I had closed out of Goodreads, but that didn't do it. Now I'm going to close Firefox and reopen it and see whether that helps.

message 693: by Linda2 (new)

Linda2 See if the same thing happens in IE. If it persists, you have to complain at the Feedback Group. Anyone can join.

message 694: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) I had something similar to what Everyman had. I thought it was weird. I can usually go back to my email, but I guess the circuits were weird since the holiday traffic of logger as in emailers. And I also got a stupid picture-ad for tech support for parents, I don't know how that came up.

message 695: by Everyman (new)

Everyman | 2507 comments Rochelle wrote: "See if the same thing happens in IE. If it persists, you have to complain at the Feedback Group. Anyone can join."

Hmmm. No, the same thing doesn't happen in IE. But I hate using IE because I don't consider it in the least safe.

message 696: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) My troubles started on Christmas Day, should've known not to go online on the busiest day of the year. What is IE short for? I still get the group comments, and don't know why it doesn't show up the groups as in the particular group thread you are in at the time.

message 697: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) I just found out that I left mine on the update instead of the groups, so now I am good. Something so simple.

message 698: by Everyman (new)

Everyman | 2507 comments Left what on the update, Robin?

I, too, but that would tell me if the problem is in FF or GR. So it's something in FF. Try emptying your cache and cookies.
