Well that escalated quickly. these chapters have so much going on and tbh it’s only going to go up from here lmao. i have a few questions for us to discuss chapters 10-20.
what did you think about the story of how the cloak helped save castallan from enslavement?
what would you do in alfie’s shoes when luka was dying?
what was your reaction when it was revealed to be ignacio that was controlled by the dark magic?
do you think nocturna is new adult or young adult?
let’s discuss!!!

I loved this section so so much! I think we need more Latinx fantasy that acknowledges slavery and reading Castallan's story of enslavement and their fight for freedom is one of the reasons I love this book so much. Alfie really was in an impossible situation when it came to what was happening to Luka. I really can't blame him, especially because he is still grieving his brother. Losing someone else close to him would be unbearable.
I forgot just how terrifying Ignacio was! I think him being the one the magic possessed adds such an interesting layer with regard to Finn. I am so devastated for her. I would consider this one YA, but that's because I don't think publishing has properly made room for books to call themselves New Adult.

I think this is YA but I would have loved to have seen how this would have turned out if it New Adult was more accepted by publishers.
I agree with Alicia, there aren't enough stories that talk about colonization and how heritages/languages have been erased because of it and this is one thing that really drew me into the story. While I was screaming (in my head) at Alfie for him to not do it, what other choice did he have? After losing his brother so soon, he couldn't bear the loss of losing another family member.
There was so much mentioning of Ignacio in previous chapters; I knew he was bound to make an appearance but the scene at the bar was absolutely terrifying! And with the dark magic magnifying his propio makes him all the more terrifying and such a good villain. But seeing Finn's reaction to him- Finn who is such a strong and somewhat fearless character- really shows how dangerous he is and this was before he had the dark magic within himself!

Yess!!!! I agree I wish we had more stories like this. Omg yes tbh I don't know how I would react in Alfie's shoes. I understand why he did what he did. Although in my first read I questioned it but now on my third read I definitely why he did what he did.
Ignacio is terrifying as Jessica said Finn was terrified of Ignacio even before the dark magic consumed his so I can only imagine what she went through. One thing I noticed from the first chapter in Finns' pov was that she was triggered by the puppet performance. And it just now hit me that it's because of Ignacio and his propio.
Also, I do think that Nocturna should be NA because of the gore and violence. I also don't think Alfie and Finn are 16-18 I feel like they're 19-21 but that's just my opinion. I brought ou the question because I discussed this with my friend Alison and we both think it is too. It definitely reads as YA because it is pretty easy to read and it's quick pacing. But, I still don't think it's YA. I don't know if that made sense but what do yall think??

I agree, I would probably label it upper YA like The Gilded Wolves. I always felt that those character read older. Oh my gosh, I did not connect that first scene with Finn to Ignacio. Aaahhh!

omg, I didn't realize it either! Ahhhh all these little details are making me enjoy this reread even more!
Yeah I wish they aged them up a bit. I remember when I first read this and when Finn was kidnapped and we were shown a decapitated head, I was not expecting that at all!
