A coworker’s friend has been looking for a book he read as a kid for over a month. This is the info he gave:

So there's a book within the book and it's read by the characters acting out the plot like a play. There's this little girl who this is her favorite book and she's the characters' favorite reader because she keeps coming back to watch them act out the story again and again until one day one of her friends tries to "age" it by putting a fire under the pages but accidentally sets it on fire so the characters escape into the girl's memory and she grows up to tell the story to her daughter. But then the old lady starts to lose her memory and forgets a background character, so the survivors tell her in a dream to rewrite the original book and she does so they have a new home.

Kristi, around what year did this person read the book? A range of years is fine (e.g,. 1980s, 1990s).

Approximately 2008-2010. He said it was during the time he read The Indian in the Cupboard and The Boxcar Children though.
