I think giving new players a free pet is a little much - I've been playing for months and still don't have a pet. But some bonus for starting I think would be good.
So what would you think would be an adequate bonus for new players? Any ideas? Has to be shiny enough to attract new people. What about the Health Gem?
Reva wrote: "I'm already liking the green gem. Every MAX HP is invaluable in surviving the rounds."I totally agree. What stats enhancement would you like to get for activating the rest of the gems? AP or HP increase or something totally different?
*whispers* Here's your chance to maybe influence Kelly and Tea. ;-)
Hmmm maybe AP? Because you can buy health potions but it takes a lot more to increase your AP?Does one of the gems increase your max HP? Because that would be amazing. There are some monsters I can't even attack yet because one round and they would totally kill me.

Yup, the activated green gem gives you + 1 max HP. The same as the Health Gem (from the Academy quest).
Zuzana wrote: "Reva wrote: "I'm already liking the green gem. Every MAX HP is invaluable in surviving the rounds."I totally agree. What stats enhancement would you like to get for activating the rest of the gem..."
LOL Like I said before, You can never be too skinny, too rich or have too many attack or defense points, so anything to enhance the weapons or HP is always greatly received.
Maybe invisibility for a round. The monsters can't attack what the don't see. That would be per battle. Not once a week. ;-D
My wardrobe is lacking armour that might reduce the monster's attack points--gauntlets, breast plates. Heel spurs.
What would everyone else like to see? I'm not as inventive as Tea and Kelly. I like the way their minds work.

Not sure I'd agree to a pet. Everyone had to work darn hard to get theirs.
Maybe a Welcome Wagon basket of goodies to entice participation Allow them 10 or 20 2015 books to use towards quests. Some free potion tokens perhaps to encourage combat. Some gold to buy stuff in the store. Remove the expiry on all quests or give time walker potions for them to decide what to unlock.

WTG CATHY! Congrats.
Cathy, I believe that Reva used LVL of her weapon as her "attack power" in her hydra battle. And I think she did it right, the hydra lust description says attack power "without modifiers". So, Cathy, if your stronger weapon is LVL 8, then hydra's AP should be 8 (-1 for Rocky= 7 AP).
Am I right, Reva?
EDIT: You can check Reva's battle here:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Her magic staff was LVL 16, therefore hydra lusts attack power was 16 APs.
Reva wrote: "Not sure I'd agree to a pet. Everyone had to work darn hard to get theirs. Maybe allow them 10 or 20 2015 books to use towards quests. If I were a new player then the difference between starting in january instead in december would be that in december I could use all my 2015 books. It means that I could probably get several of the pets at once. So one pet isn't such an "injustice" as it may seem at first glance especially if the use of 2015 books is not allowed to new players.
BTW Reva, if they're smart enough then they could cherrypick their 20 books so that they get one of the pets and a head start for another one. Just saying. ;-)

Now this is an interesting idea. But still, if they're smart they could exchange their 10-20 2015 books for a pet no problem. ;-)
I figured that the attack power is the level +2. Should I refigure? I wouldn't want to shortchange myself.
Cathy wrote: "I figured that the attack power is the level +2. Should I refigure? I wouldn't want to shortchange myself."I think you should refigure, Cathy. It worked for Reva. She posted the battle here and Kelly had no objections.
BTW CONGRATS ON YOUR DRAGON/HYDRA SLAYING! :D
Cathy wrote: "I figured that the attack power is the level +2. Should I refigure? I wouldn't want to shortchange myself."The +2 I considered to be a modifier so hydra lust's attack power for you would be 8 - rock
Cathy wrote: "Okay, I refigured and over the course of all my battles, it ended up saving me a heal potion:)"See it pays to post in the Tavern. Zuzana's eagle eyes miss nothing. ;-)
Cathy wrote: "Okay, I refigured and over the course of all my battles, it ended up saving me a heal potion:)"Glad to be of help. :)

LOL! What really helps is that there already are thanks to Reva battles posted here that show us how it's done.
Take hydra, it's quite difficult to figure out how to count either the monster's APs or the hero's APs. It's some crazy stuff. Reva attacked all of the heads first and posted her battles here. I asked Kelly some questions and what it came down to was that Reva did all the hydra battles right. So I use Reva's battles as a template. If I'm not sure how to count APs I just check out how Reva did it and it should be fine.
Thanks Reva for being such a pioneer hero! :D
BTW If you're looking for Reva's HYdra battles, they are around page 80 of this thread.
Now there is some stuff that wasn't available when Reva did her attacks - Rocky the Pet, mercenaries, baubles, shield potions, she didn't use enhance weapon potion - and it's not always clear how to combine these things. These are the questions I asked Kelly and they are all answered somewhere in this thread.
Does "4) Gather Nails - Read a book with something pointy on the cover (knife, nail, stiletto, etc.)" necessarily something sharp? Because this cover had something pointy, but not sharp:
I think a goodie basket to new players is a great idea, and I think them choosing to spend 15 books from 2015 on a pet seems more fair then just handing someone one. This way, they at least have to put some thought into which books to keep and how to spend them. Books, some gold, a couple potions seems like a decent incentive to start for someone who actually wants to play.

Looks like a paintbrush. Not sharp --just hairy.

Aww shucks. *Blush*. Thanks for the comments. I try to do my best. ;-)
And I will work on a FAQ but it might be after the 18th when I'm off work for the rest of the year :)
Kelly wrote: "And I will work on a FAQ but it might be after the 18th when I'm off work for the rest of the year :)"Are you sure that we need FAQ? After all we DO HAVE Zuzanna.
Kelly wrote: "What do you think of a world event that involves the new and existing players?"A great way to build comraderie. Just no plagues please.
A FAQ would be great since it's a daunting idea to search through 92 pages of the local tavern topic looking for an answer to a question that's been asked before.
Congrats Cathy on all your attacks!World event would be fun. I like that so many people participated and there was more interaction :)
What about putting together a party with books? We could have teams to organize catering (food/drinks) and costumes and another group to put together the entertainment?Catering could be covers with food and drinks on them, and costuming would be clothing types on the covers. Maybe some spell it out challenges too.
The entertainment could be books featuring entertainers, using covers for instruments and circus like entertainment, and title words to put together a story and/or play!
Oh, we could also have a tournament! The team for that would collect books with weapons and horses on the covers. Read books involving knights and what not. :)
We could have a petting zoo too. Mythic and normal animals allowed.
Maybe each book worth 1-2 experience. Special awards and titles for different teams.
For example, the petting zoo team would earn a special pet, the catering team would earn a new piece of clothing or recipe, the entertainment team earn a new bauble or some type, and the games team would earn a new weapon bauble. Maybe add potion bonus for each of the four groups for every 5 or 10 books added.
Maybe everyone can join 2 teams actually - that would be fun. Or more. Now that it popped into my head, I'm getting lots and lots of ideas for this. I'd love to help put something together with the mods if I'd be allowed. ;)
Brainstorming:Catering Team
Read a book with a drink or food on the cover to help feed the attendees.
Read a book with a table or chair on the cover to give everyone a place to sit.
Whip up a special food or drink! Name the special food or drink and add the recipe ingredients. Spell out the ingredients using the spell-it-out rules OR find the ingredient in the title, author, or series title
For every book read, 1 experience is awarded.
For every 5 books read, get one Healing Potion.
For 20+ books read, get a special recipe only available here!
I'm really loving this. I've already started brainstorming what I would use for these. Kinda upset I already read the
series.
RebeccaS wrote: "Wait that sounds awesome Daphne!!! So fun!!!!"Thank you RebeccaS! I really enjoy this nrpg challenge. Its not like any other one I've been a part or or seen anywhere. I hope it keeps fresh, alive, and active for a really long time to come.
I agree. I was hesitant to start at first because it seemed really complicate to me. I didn't know if I really understood at first glance and wasn't sure I wanted to commit. I've never played an RPG game before. But I'm so glad I did!! Im more committed than any other challenge (even TT) and have read so many more books than I ever have before.I would love to bring this game to other people and keep it fresh and going for many more years.
Maybe a way to entice people like me who may not be that interested in first glance?
I think a world event would be fun. I liked the way we had to work together on the plague. I would prefer not to compete against each other.
I agree with Cathy we shouldn't be competing against each other since this is a single player game and thus we can read a our own pace. But maybe if we could all work on each group (dancing, food, costumes, etc) and therefore read as much / as little as we wanted.
Sorry about this but how do you make a bed? I see with the sheets you need a bed first, but I have been scrolling through the quests and can't find the one for the bed.
RebeccaS wrote: "Sorry about this but how do you make a bed? I see with the sheets you need a bed first, but I have been scrolling through the quests and can't find the one for the bed."The bed is from the "Clinomaniac" quest that came out in October!
Here it is in case you missed it :)
Clinomaniac
Every morning, you wake up at the crack of dawn. You squint, blink your eyes several times, then yawn, close your eyes again, grumble, thrash around, pull your sheets up, push them down, itch, grumble, then finely pry yourself out of bed to face the day. Your pallet just isn't cutting it anymore. You have a severe case of clinomania and need a better bed to give in to your deeper issues. Luckily, the town woodworker is willing and able to help you on your quest.... for a price.
Requires House.
Gather 4 large logs for the bed legs. Each log may be found in a book with a tree on the cover.
Gather 4 rails for the sides. Each rail may be found in a book over 500 pages.
Gather fabric for the mattress by reading a trilogy.
Gather feathers to stuff the mattress by reading a book with a chicken or duck in the story.
Receive 10 Experience and a Bed for gathering all the materials. Bed will heal you 1 HP every Sunday.

I don't like the idea of people competing against each other. That's what other team challenges like Gladiator Games are about. - let's do it more about cooperation and common goals.
Reva wrote: "Are you sure that we need FAQ? After all we DO HAVE Zuzanna."
LOL! I'd love to remember all Kelly's answers without checking them. Scrolling through 90+ pages of this thread is not much fun. ;-)
So for the shield.....you need to get all the gems before you can have the shield? Or you get the shield and then can work on the gems as you go?
RebeccaS wrote: "No plagues on our poor animals please! But another event would be okay."Don't worry, no more plagues.
RebeccaS wrote: "So for the shield.....you need to get all the gems before you can have the shield? Or you get the shield and then can work on the gems as you go?"You need all the gems before you get the base shield. It's definitely an advanced item.
