Nothing But Reading Challenges discussion
A Novel Role-Playing Game

The Local Tavern

I'm hoping we can do another world even this fall but it would be everyone working towards adding a new game dynamic.

you'll need to level up your hero to LVL 7 (135 XPs), your sword to LVL 7, get 1 Minor Poison Potion, ..."
Oh Wow, Zuzana, I can't believe you've spent so much time doing that. Thank you, thank you!

P.S. It wouldn't have taken so long but I worked with different options for weapon levels and potions to see what would be most efficient.

I don't believe you answered the question of selling the balance (1900) at market. :-) "
Lol. No selling bugs at the market..."
The quote is:
He gave her a curious look, probably referring to the pesky insect that descended on Florida twice a year. The creatures went flying around in swarms, Thousands of Pairs Conjoined in bliss until they splatted en masse onto every car in the state lol
at a minimum Thousands of Pairs Conjoined means 1000 x2 = 2000 bugs. Do you not agree?

my question: "So if there's a fly mentioned 3 times on a page it counts as 3? Even if it's the same fly?
And if there's a swarm of a hundred flies mentioned once it counts as 1.
Is this right?"
Kelly's reply: "Right Zuzana"
Has anyone read The Bees by Laline Paull?
1) does it refer to their bee-ness during the text? and if not...
2) as (almost*) every character is a bee... can we take reference to a character = reference to a bug???!
(* hedging my bets, as this is an assumption, not having read it yet)
Also: look at that cover! is bee-tastic! Can we count cover image bees in the bug-hunt count?!
[yes, this is a VERY tongue-in-cheek question, but it'd by super-awesome to find all those bugs in the one (reportedly very good) book!]
EDIT: amazon look=inside garnered me 6 (if I include "fly" thought technically it was used in the verb not noun) insects in the first three/four pages. I suspect this is a winner for the bug challenge!

quote from the quest description:
"Bugs include Ants, Beetles, Flies, Mosquitoes, Spiders, and anything else you would denote as a creepy crawly."

SCORE! LMAO

The Swarm: A Post Apocalyptic Thriller by Chris Pearson
"When Dallas is attacked by a horde of giant mutated insects the only thing on Meg Donner’s mind is returning home. Home is Kansas, home is north on the highway. Home is the last stop on a terrifying journey that will take her through the heart of nature’s First World War.
It's Mankind versus Bugkind, and the collective mind of The Swarm."
So if giant mutated insects count we're fixed. :D

Zuzana wrote: "LOL! I just got The Swarm by Chris Pearson. I did a Kindle search and it has 104 separate references to bug or bugs. ;) I didn't bother to search for swarms and insects. :p XD"
The Swarm is awesome. as well as BUGS. BIG BUGS. (that's a truncated quote) there's lots of discussion about Jungian theories of Collective Unconscious. And bikes (my boyfriend would be keen that that be mentioned. Bikes as the best mode of transport in an apocalyptic situation)
Plus, in the first FOUR chapter (36% in) I have counted the following:
39 Bugs
12 Ants
7 Locusts
4 Mosquitoes
3 Beetles
3 Dragonflies
2 Moths
2 Insects
1 Fly
1 Bee
1 Grasshopper
1 Cricket
================
76 Creepy Crawlies
Plus uncounted mentions of The Swarm
A truly excellent find Zuzana!

That's amazing that you found a book with so many bugs!
Maybe I'll just have to find a book that takes place in the jungle or something.

Why settle for anything else? If it ain't broke...

I've also found a book that gets me all the way from Paperville to Novelette - 80 furlongs in one bound :)

If you are Ok with bees, The Bees by Laline Paull will fit the bill (333 mentions, according to kindle search). less blood & gore &car-sized mutant insects.
I am slightly worried how I'll sleep tonight!

Do you have to download the book to do a word search? Is there a way to check before you get a book?

so far as I know, you have to download it. Kelly seems to like googlebooks, which might be searchable (and return a count) before you own/download it. I've never been able to get on with googlebooks though.

People also have luck using the preview function in Amazon. I think you have to go to the print edition of a book to do that though.

I'll work it out tonight. I might launch both the next ones since one is aimed at higher level players only.
For those who might also be reading Zuzanna's find The Swarm, my tally of creepy-crawlies is:
107 Bug
40 Crawling ones (ant, beetle, etc)
52 Flying ones (dragonfly, moth, bee, wasp etc)
13 Grasshopper types
94 Spider types
==========
306 TOTAL
plus some slugs, which I refused to count on account of having a huge horror of them from reading Shaun Huston's "Slugs" at a too-tender age.
The book itself does what it says on the tin: mutant insect apocalypse road trip fun: enjoyable nonsense!

So Dr. Cottage will be having a few more announcements soon.

hahahahaha

I'm so lost that I don't even know what that means and so that my exit to head out to bed *yawning* it's after 12 midnight and need a functioning brain in 5 hrs

Your health level
The level of your sword
The level of your staff
What Dragon you plan to attack.
Are the cat and horse active?
Do you have Spock's plasma weapon
Death's Wish
Minor poison potions
Damage or Enhanced weapon potions
Minor Heal potions
Heal potions
Major Heal Potions

Heh. I think I might be asleep by then. I shall check in the morning to see if Dr. Cottage can make his announcement.

"There were so many bugs I couldn't keep count" would still only be one :P "
