If you're interested here are the stats I had when I attacked my first dragon (the Green one) last week:
LVL 7 || HP: 23/23 || Sword: LVL 0 (AP: 3) || Magic Staff: LVL 9 (AP: 12) || XP: 135
In a week I healed my HP to max (Everybody lies quest) and leveled up my sword to LVL 3. And that was enough to kill the rest of the dragons (Red - Blue - LVL up - Yellow) .
To do all this I needed:
a Baroque Horse (+ 1 AP on both weapons)
1 Health Gem (+ 1 HP to max health)
2 Major Heal Potions
2 Minor Heal Potions
7 Heal Potions
1 Minor Poison Potion (see bellow)
1 Enhanced Weapon Potion (or 1 Damage Potion, if you have it you don't need the Minor Poison Potion)
4 Bat Wings
and the Orbs - you get them as you kill the dragons

P.S. I know about the TV series but I didn't watch it because I'd like to read the books first.

The first book was published 1991. -- 24 yrs. about every 4+ years.

Right now I'm working on upping my sword, but I think maybe I don't need to get it as high as I originally thought. Right now it's level 5 and I was going to get it to level 7. I'm also trying to get some gold so I can guy some potions at the next Caravan.
Since my staff is still level 0, I guess it would sense to attack the Great Red Dragon first (+2 for sword and half power for staff)?
Also I need to figure out what level to get to so I have a high enough max hp. Hmmm lots to plan.

It's your choice which of your weapons would be a stronger "main" weapon that you use for the majority of attacks. You can quite neglect the other weapon and still be fine. I personally find leveling of magic staff easier so staff is my weapon of choice.
But if you want to focus on your sword, it's fine and then you don't need to have a high level staff. Today I made my plans for slaying the Great Novel Dragon and I figured out that LVL 11 weapon is sufficient as long as you have both Enhanced Weapon Potion and Damage Potion. And IMO while LVL 11 sword is not as easy to obtain as LVL 11 staff, it's still "doable".
EDIT:
Rebecca, with your stats slaying the Great Red Dragon first is the best possible option. Good luck!

Rebecca, I got the Enhanced Weapon Potion from "The Kindness of Strangers" quest, and the Damage Potion from "Time for The Dead" quest ending tomorrow :)

I levelled up to 9 which gave me 26 +1 HP
I attacked the rest at level 9 Sword 5 and Staff 15
The orbs you win boost your sword and staff
You need lots of potions

I gather the whole kitchen/house thing isn't that important? I'm going to work on the house next because it will give me some Experience points which I need.

So the house and kitchen while not essential, allowed me to attack sooner. Otherwise, I would have had to complete many quests for heal potions or wait until the June Caravan.

But that's because you forgot about the dragons, Reva. ;) You could have slayed them much much sooner.
I killed all of the lesser dragons on LVL 7 hero, LVL 3 Sword and LVL 9 Magic Staff.

Ooh, I'm afraid it's too late fot the extension cards, Rebecca. They expired on the 31st of May. :(

If you read tons of books then it's fine to spend tens of them on building the kitchen and obtaining recipes. If you don't then it's a waste of books better spent elsewhere (upgrading your weapons, getting money for potions, getting XPs).
Buying heal potions is much cheaper than cooking your own health restoring meals.

I haven't heard about that. How do they work?

I agree about the house and kitchen and the poor value of the recipes. The market yields far better return on investment.
However, not all of us are smart enough to buy gazillions of potions. LOL. I had to make do with what I had at the time. While knee deep in bear meat and mouse meat.

As for the Meatballs I posted the math for them on the previous page. They have better cost/benefits ratio than the steaks but they're still nowhere near as effective as the potions.

Yes there are 2 new cards for you to use. You can use them same as old ones. Only image is different and they expire in August.

LOL! Reva, I wrote "If you read tons of books then it's fine ..." So clearly it's fine for you. XD

YAY! Thanks, Tea. It's great news. And thanks, Rebecca, for mentioning the cards here, I would have missed them otherwise.
P.S. Tea, where do we get the images?

Last minute :P
Good thing I remembered to post those gift cards on time :)

Not sure i understand you.
If you use one and then don't finish quest in next month, you can use second one too (if you didn't use it already).
But if you say you are going to use both of them for same quest and finish quest in one extended time, your second one is also used so you can't use it for another quest.
Does it make sense?

I was going to abandon the Time for the Dead Quest, but like Rebecca, I might use one of my cards as well if that's OK?

Here's Stanchion Achilles

And very appropriately, I managed to finish the quest by reading The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
