Nothing But Reading Challenges discussion
A Novel Role-Playing Game

The Local Tavern
I have a question and I KNOW it's been answered before, but I want to double check. For any instance where your weapon only gets only half their usual damage... this includes weapon extras right?
So if I have the Growth Weapon Enhancement and Orb of Earth and Combat hat, do I add all of those before taking half?
Round 1:
Level 16 Staff (18 base attack), + Growth Weapon Enhancement (+1) + Orb of Earth (+3), 1 Combat Hat (+1) /2 = 11.5 rounded down to 11
Round 2:
Level 16 Staff (18 base attack), + Growth Weapon Enhancement (+2) + Orb of Earth (+3), 1 Combat Hat (+1) /2 = 11
etc?
My puppy has just achieved combat certificate and now has an AP of 1. During battles at what stage would my puppy attack:Scenario 1
Hero attacks
Puppy attacks
Monster attacks
Or
scenario 2
Hero attacks
Monster Attacks
Puppy Attacks

Hi Louise,
your puppy attacks at the same time as the hero. I personally add the puppy's AP to my hero's attack power.
Rebecca wrote: "Okay I'm thinking this how it works.... and then I can add the pets on, after I take the half?"I need to look into it. But I think you are right, Rebecca.

Cathy wrote: "I just entered my werewolf battle in the training yard. Looking for input- does it look right?"This looks good! My only question is about the last round - the red gem doesn't apply to pets (sorry if I'm reading your notes wrong), does it apply to weapon potions (enhanced, major poison, etC).
I'm also going to use The Shadow of the Orb of Earth.
After a book with 20 and one with 24 “control”s, I have found Murderland! It has at least 25 “control”s, plus some plurals. In case I’m not the only one who wants to read 500 pages about lead poisoning and serial killers….

Thanks for catching that. I have edited it and added a round so I don't need the red gem. I'm not sure it it applies to the weapon potions but this way it doesn't matter (-;
*Lady Tea stumbles in The Tavern covered from head to toe in cobwebs and dust bunnies. With sleepy eyes looks around, yawns, sneezes*That was a nice nap. What did I miss? ☺
*coughs up dust bunny*
I've noticed that my tote bag has expired. So, I've been adding books to tote all this time (or at least most of it) but since I wasn't updating challenges, my tote is over 500 books. Should I exchange all of them for points or is there maximum of points for that. It really feels too much.I'm still trying to decide should I continue my previous character or start new one. Or maybe even both....

Welcome back, Tea. :) Cobwebs will come in handy in the Halloween quest (Last Orders at the Haunted Tankard). ;-)
You can exchange all books read before the end of 2024 for XP; there's no cap. For higher-level heroes 500+ XP is not an extravagant amount.
Was somebody asking about the RED GEM?The pets and anything that enhances pet's attack (Radagast, fish, PPP) can't be doubled!
The potions, hats and bonuses that increase damage made by weapons, are doubled.
Example:
This is my old calculation of my "mightiest" strike with my LVL 18 Magic Staff:
The Mightiest strike
= Red Gem, Damage Potion, Weapon Enhance Potion, Growing Strength Potion, Pet Plus Potion, fish, lucky 13 collar, Orb, Magic Hat, baroque horse, puppy with LVL 2 attack, kitty, bauble for my staff
1st round
2 x (20 + 3 orb + 1 hat + 1 bauble + 1 GSP + 3 damage + 3 WEP) + (1 horse + 2 puppy + (2 x 3 cat) + 9 PPP)= 64+18=82 AP

Also I know this has been answered a million times, but any potion can be duplicated with the magical pumpkin as long as you own one right? I'm specifically looking at Stoneskin Potion and Greater Poison Potion
Rebecca wrote: "Also I know this has been answered a million times, but any potion can be duplicated with the magical pumpkin as long as you own one right? I'm specifically looking at Stoneskin Potion and Greater ..."Hi Rebecca, unless it's a "luxurious potion" (https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...), it can be duplicated. So far, we have only one luxurious potion and that's the Re-animation potion.
In short, Halloween Potions can be duplicated by the Magical Pumpkin.
EDIT: Only to add, that there is a post in the FAQ thread that explains what can and what cannot be duplicated in more detail. You might find it helpful. (https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...)
Hear ye, hear ye, bookish heroes of the Novel Kingdom!I’ve prepared a very gentle, low-stress, no-dragons-required end-of-year challenge: The End (of Another Year) Is Nigh!
It’s a nice, soft-ball kind of quest to help you wrap up the year without your brain melting out your ears. You’ll get Santa Coupons for your efforts (because even heroes deserve a little festive bribery).
It’s a participation challenge, which means your books won’t be used up - they’ll simply work double duty and help you along on other quests. Think of it as multitasking, but with more reading and fewer explosions.
So dust off those TBR piles, claim a comfy chair, and join in before the calendar gives up entirely!

I love this quest! Definitely have too many quests to work on.I absolutely love this part: Pages upon pages of uncompleted tasks have begun to accumulate in dark corners, forming small, feral colonies of paperwork that hiss when disturbed.
I work in a library and am now imagining the books hissing at me or getting angry if they think they are mishandled.
Glad you like the quest. I wanted someting fun, easy and useful.
@Natasha, my niece works as a librarian, and this part was inspired by her talk about the stacks of books waiting to be put back on the shelves. :)

I have a question about The Curse of the Crystal - for the 1000 page books... are we allowed to use book glue to glue to books together to work for these?
Ray, I'm sorry, but you can't have on your list more than three books towards a single quest. From the rules: You may not assign more than three books to a single quest. This means you must commit to at least four different quests. (Yes, mathematics is cruel. The Queen knows this.)
Rebecca, of course you can use book glue. It would be too difficult otherwise. :)
The End (of Another Year) Is Nigh!1. The Teapot Conspiracy: Read a book with a teacup or teapot on the cover. - The Secrets of Strangers

Ok. Those were just the books I already had planned & I wanted to get it in bc family stuff is happening this weekend and next week so I’ll be busy. I’ll revise.
Alright, edited my post above. That was hard as I only have 5 quests left and one only needs 1 book!
You mean, you have completed all of the quests bar 5?! That's impressive, Ray. *slow clapping and impressed stare*
Zuzana wrote: "You mean, you have completed all of the quests bar 5?! That's impressive, Ray. *slow clapping and impressed stare*"Yeah. I’ve been here almost 10 years 😁👍🏻 And it’s 4 now, I wrapped one up last night, I’m just behind on updating 🤪
Does anybody participate in the Scrounger hunts? I wonder if I should create a new Scrounger quest every 5-6 months or so or if it's a waste of time.
Rebecca wrote: "I like the scrounger because I have a lot of extra books, but I don't know if others do."Good to know, Rebecca. I was worried that nobody did them. Do you have enough quests to work on?
I hoped that the cut-off for old books would help a little bit.
Rebecca wrote: "Yes I still have quite a few I am working on!! :)"Great.
I have two quests ready for December and want to add at least two more. Any ideas on a theme? Any suggestions will be appreciated.
I'm thinking something to celebrate Jane Austen's 250th anniversary. But want to add at least one more quest.
