The Local Tavern
Well done Sally! Hope it has helped make sense of the game.
Oh that sounds like an interesting feature that I haven't come across before. Might have to check it out soon.

I have a question regarding the Book Reserve - can I use any book that I started after I joined this adventure (plus my 15 books from the welcome basket) for any quests unless the quest specifically says otherwise (like the Winter Holidays)?
Thanks!!
Yup! Tasks will say if they require "fresh" books to be used to complete them, like the Winter Holidays one. If it doesn't say anything then any from your tote and/or basket are fair game!
As Cat said, using anything unused since you started is fine for the quests, unless they say otherwise.

Welcome Stephanie - I’ve just finished my apprenticeship and it was such a great help.
I’ve slowed a little with Christmas activities - but planning to get into it again in the new year.
My helpful tip is to pop into other apprenticeship threads and also look at the threads of the mentors and other newly minted heroes to give you a wide view of how people do things.
Also ask questions - someone will always answer. The only stupid question is the one not asked 😀

Welcome Stephanie! Have fun and good luck with your adventures. The others have already given the best advice to get you started and I'm sure Cat will point you in the right direction on most things.
I've decided that staying in the palace with Queen Skye is a bit dull, and it's time to go exploring so I've found a mentor (thanks Natasha). I look forward to seeing you all as we explore.
Queen Skye is eager to know what you all think of the quests and challenges in her kingdom. Please give yourselves 5XP and 5 gold for completing this questionnaire

Thank you for lovely Christmas presents! 😘
P.S.: Could you please add both the new quest and the questionnaire link (BTW great idea!) to the Notice Board? Thanks.

Your post has inspired me to gift you (and the 10 other newbies) each a potion token. I posted it in the Apprenticeship Scheme thread.
You might consider buying a duplication potion and using it for the 600 page book. Best of luck adventuring.

Thank you Sir Ray - your kindness is much appreciated - and advice on how to use it is noted 😀

Like Sally906, I found Bestselling Authors' Exclusive Insights on Their Biggest Books quite interesting, although most of the books mentioned I haven't read and don't plan to. It is enlightening to see where an author's head is at when they come up with a great book idea, though.
The article I really enjoyed was Jennifer Weiner on the Power of Women's Stories and Killing 'Chick Lit'. She talks about her book,

There were a lot more articles and interviews I peeked at and I know I'll be back to this section of GR in the future! Thanks, NBRC, for the impetus to explore the site more!

Welcome everyone new and old! It's lovely to see the tavern full of life again and to hear about your discoveries in the kingdom. Don't be strangers now.

I did recently add a quest idea to the Melting Pot - just wanted to make sure you saw it.
Thanks Laurie! I'm keeping them in mind to help bring something out each month.
I love reading your thread btw - it's very creative.

I love mysteries, I'm very fond of YA books, but having recently shifted from lovers to friends with my ex-girlfriend, I'm most interested in losing myself in some romances.

Introducing Sir Mel
In pursuit of the best winter waterfall picture ever, Mel heads up the icy trail. Stopping every so often to warm her hands and check that her telephoto lens isn't frosting up, she snaps a picture or two and looks around for better angles. Spying a particularly enticing vantage point, she replaces her camera in its hip holster, balances her tripod on her shoulder and heads up a steep incline. Nearly to the top and on the edge of a thin ledge, her foot slips. The weight in her camera bag shifts, pulling her backwards, and she begins to fall. Cringing, she closes her eyes and waits for the inevitable impact.
A hearty thump on her shoulder causes her eyes to pop open in surprise.
"Welcome to Novel Kingdom, Sir Mel. Good luck on the quests! You're gonna need it."
A smiling but swarthy looking fellow removes his hand from her shoulder, turns, and saunters towards a ramshackle building, disappearing within. A sign above the door says Mercenaries for Hire. Not expecting to be standing upright, she closes her gaping mouth and slowly looks around her. Other buildings line the dirty cobble-stone street. Judging from the clinking of glass, laughter, and what generously could be called music, coming from a building on her right, a tavern is close by. She blinks and swallows.
Realizing she's no longer cold, she glances down at herself. She's wearing long leather boots with styling and coloring reminiscent of her winter hiking boots, dark blue and brown leggings with a thicker, leather front piece (almost like chaps, but sewn in) that remind her of her ski pants, a similarly styled leather jacket, and thin, dark blue leather gloves. She's not sure she wants to see what is on her head in place of her ski cap. In her left hand is a black staff with orange highlights. It looks an awful lot like her tripod, only morphed somehow. On her right hip is a sword with a black pommel in a lovely white scabbard. She bends her head a little closer and squints at the word etched in the edge of the pommel - Sony.
A muttered oath escapes her lips. Not again!
[Note: I started this challenge in 2016 under a different username. I had to quit due to crazy life happenings. I've been itching to get back to it, but have decided to start fresh under my new GR username. For my old progress, look up Lady Ray's Adventure thread.]

I love it! Wonderful tale of how you arrived 😀
I understand about returning some time after an initial start - I too have done that.
I think I have bitten off too many quests at once though - getting a bit overwhelmed.
Have decided to just work on one at a time for a while 😀

Fantastic introduction! Welcome back, Sir Mel!

I think I have bitten off too many quests at once though - getting a bit overwhelmed.

It can get overwhelming pretty easily. But I like the fun of planning out what books I need to read to accomplish the quests and reach my goals. By queueing up 4 or 5 books at a time, I never have to wonder about what book to read next, I just start in on the next one. I guess I'm a list-maker at heart.

Are there any caps on weapon upgrades?

To answer your questions:
1/ You can combine books by glueing them together, there's a special quest for it:
When Two Become One - Repeatable
Mix: 1 Egg, 1 Goblin Bone and 1 Book with a main character whose first or last name starts with S.
Reward: 1 Book Glue. Glue 2 books together to make a bigger book with the combined total of pages.
So it's not as easy as putting two books together and saying that they are combined. You need to get the glue before you can do that. And you need new glue everytime you're combining books. It's helpful if you're trying to upgrade your sword to higher levels, otherwise I'd say it's a waste of a book and other resources (to obtain the glue).
2/ Glueing together works only for page count. There's no way to create a book that's a certain number in the series.
3/ There's no cap on weapon upgrades. But as you'll find out the higher the level the more difficult it gets (because it "costs" more books). That's why even players who play from the beginning rarely have higher level weapon than 15-18.
e.g. My staff is LVL 16 - I would like to upgrade it to LVL 18 - but it would take 35 books (17+18) - books I can use elsewhere. Not to mention that you don't need such a high level of weaponry to attack rare monsters - I remember attacking "coloured" dragons with level 9 Staff and level 3 sword. It can be done and I'd say it's more fun to do with less and plan every move, potion, mercenary, magical item you'll have to use to be successful in your attack.
I hope this helped. :)

I’m not sure mods are checking the apprenticeship thread - there are two people in there, a hero and learner, who could be matched but haven’t been from the end of January.

Anyway, a PM to Mod's account might fix that. And because there's a spare experienced hero, if Lysa decides it's something she'd like to try she won't need to wait.

OK - thank you - I’ll know next time.
Working through my bunny quest right now - while training my naughty puppy 😀

The first task was to check out the goodreads blog - something I was aware of but have never visited. I only needed to check out 3 articles - but ended up reading many more.
One article that lead me to another goodreads feature that I was only vaguely aware of was this: Bestselling Authors' Exclusive Insights on Their Biggest Books: https://www.goodreads.com/blog/show/1...
I haven’t used this feature (kindle notes and highlights) although I have been aware of it - but it was so interesting to see what as well as other goodreads members think of books outside their reviews, but discovered that well known authors also wrote their thoughts about quotes and characters of their own books.
Can see me exploring so many more now I know it’s there.
