*shuffles in, a slice of berry pie in one hand*Leveled up my staff, which allowed me to kill my first bat. It almost killed me in the process though. I was able to level up. Feeling rejuvinated, I killed my first goblin. That one didn't manage to kill me, but it did a number. So, I was able to find that last berry, and the pie has helped out a lot. Phew...
Think I'm done fighting for the day. :)
1 potion token is good for ANY potion from Jack's right? (excluding ones I haven't unlocked in quests)
Alyssa wrote: "1 potion token is good for ANY potion from Jack's right? (excluding ones I haven't unlocked in quests)"That's correct. Best to save them for the most powerful and expensive potions:.
• Pet Plus Potion - 12 Gold(must be unlocked through Alchemy That! quest) - Doubles the effects of any pets of the hero for one week.
• Shield Potion - 15 Gold - Halves the damage taken by monsters for a single turn.
• Growing Strength Potion - 15 Gold - Every turn increases the attack power of both weapons by 1. (First Turn +1, Second Turn +2, Third Turn +3). Lasts for a single battle.
Use your scrounger items to create other potions or spend gold for things like damage and enhanced weapon potions.
You may be anxious to use the token right away, however I have learned patience in this game and do larger attacks when I have gathered all the necessary ingredients to do multiple attacks -- thereby gaining the double benefit of long lasting potions and the continued services of mercenaries.

Sounds like a job well done. * hands Rylie a tankard of ale*. This should help revive your strength
You know, it's too bad we can't just use a book we personally hated for the awful book. That would have made it a bit easier
Would the Hat Hat give x2 Merely Kat pelts when they're killed? Or is that just something that will take the full 10 months to get 10? (Figure no find items potion since it wasn't noted on the quest for the comforter.)

I was like.....5 months if that works, and 10 if it doesn't, so I was wondering if there was something in the works. lol. I'm likely to forget to battle the weekly stuff so I know I'll forget the monthly. haha. Seems like a long investment for +1HP/week.
No worries either way. Not like I'm going anywhere. lol ;)
Thanks!
Won't hiring the Twins double the pelts?• Doubles drops from common and timed monsters. (If Hat Hat is used, drops will double from the double when applicable.)
Merely cat's are 1/mo therefore timed. But hat hat wouldn't apply.
So hiring the Twins (hadn't seen that addition) 5 months in a row would = 10 merely kat pelts with 5 kills?I guess you'd get the extra bonus for the commons as a side bonus.
I had a backlog of a month and a half of books I hadn't added, so I caught up slowly while helping take care of my newborn nieces. haha. Very slowly. Got the first one and a bit of intermediate out of the way. You'll get them soon! You and Reva read more than I do and I thought I read a lot. haha. That's one thing I love about goodreads. No one is really like YOU READ TOO MUCH. They're just like YAY BOOKS! READ MORE! :D :D :D
Teresa wrote: "Nevermind - it's the intermediate tracking...ugh, I'm still working on obedience!"
Yeah imagine my surprise when I was all set to go after Correction Fluid and discovered I needed intermediate tracking.
Had to do a lot of scrambling and raiding other almost completed quests and scrounger items to come up with the right books. UGH!
I'm afraid to cash in Essential Oils because it keeps proving to be such a treasure trove of books with the right qualifications for whatever new quests come along. :-)
I feel like I'm moving so slowly... Everything is taking so much time and I have so many partially completed quests. I'm just not sure where to focus my books on. Do I complete the relay? I am 1/2 done... do I get my puppy useful? Do I work on my bed? Finish my Laser gun? Level up my staff? work towards the final Hydras? I'm nowhere close to the Queens or other monsters and still have quite a bit to do to even get the last hydras. I would like to get the slingshot and a squirrel, I would also like a HatHat and a wizard hat, but I spent all my gold on the hydras I just defeated.
I also have some purely XP quests I am close to finishing but think re-purposing the books to other quests might be a better idea... So many decisions!!!
Teresa wrote: "I feel like I'm moving so slowly... Everything is taking so much time and I have so many partially completed quests. I'm just not sure where to focus my books on. Do I complete the relay? I am 1/2 ..."I've found that I like moving 5 or 6 quests I want to focus on in my top quest posts. I try to fit books into those, and when I can't fit them there, I then move down my open quest lists until I find somewhere to pop them.
I did buckle down and completely leveled up my puppy with all certificates finished last week! It made me super happy to finish that final Hidden quest. I promptly took my pup out and we tracked down a Merely Kat together. It felt like a real hunting part because I got to bring my pet rock, kitty, puppy, and the twins. We had a grand ol' time.
Teresa wrote: "I feel like I'm moving so slowly... Everything is taking so much time and I have so many partially completed quests. I'm just not sure where to focus my books on. Do I complete the relay? I am 1/2 ..."Don't waste any time or Gold on the squirrel. You can get acorns in the market and by fulfilling the monthly acorn thingy. Unless the mods give it more purpose (s) it's just not worth it.
The slingshot is only 5 books BUT after most of my battle scenarios , I find it rarely makes a difference and I don't bother wasting the acorn.
My staff has a base of 17 and after all the mods and potions gets me an attack of 36-40. That's where I concentrated first but I like the quests too.
Save the relay for throwaway books that don't fit any of the quest criteria.
Getting the puppy to Intermediate combat is the best deal. Coupled with the pet plus potion, it gives you +4 EVERY ROUND.
I have the first hat which allows me to attack commons every 6 days. I can see getting the Hat Hat to accelerate rat tails for sheets. Less so the Wizard hat. It gives you the attack of a horse for almost double the book equivalent SO MUCH GOLD!!
Yes they are tough decisions. :-(
Just checking....with the growth bauble" we can use that every time right? Not just a one battle use?
RebeccaS wrote: "Just checking....with the growth bauble" we can use that every time right? Not just a one battle use?"Yes. It's yours forever unless like with Correction Fluid they take away stuff that you could use.
The Bauble coupled with the growth weapon potion are awesome for the longer battles.
Hi all,So I have a question. You have common monsters, that respawn every week. And then, you have the timed monsters, like the drop bear, that reappear on Sunday. So, what's the difference? It says that once the week is over, the drop bear is then not available. So, if I forget to kill a sewer rat for the week, does that give me two of them that I can kill next week? Because if you can only kill one per week, aren't they the same as the weekly timed monsters? Or, can you only kill the drop bears on Sundays? Confused...
Also, I have a suggestion. :) I have a whole entire backlog of books I read in 2015. What if there was a potion, kind of like the duplication potion, that allowed you to take one book you've read from the previous year and put that toward a task? It would help to curb the disappointment of coming in to this challenge 2 months late, thereby locking me out of 2015 books completely. Which is why it could be the same as a duplication potion, which would either take money or a token, and it would keep us from grabbing every book from last year. And, for the people who are allowed 2015 books, maybe it could give them a chance to pick a 2014 book to use. Just my mid day thoughts. :)
Rylie wrote: "Hi all,So I have a question. You have common monsters, that respawn every week. And then, you have the timed monsters, like the drop bear, that reappear on Sunday. So, what's the difference? It s..."
On that thought, I starting thinking about the double experience potions from my MMO's games. They generally show up in games after they've been out for awhile to attract new members. What if had a quest for members that would give them a double experience potion that can be used when turning in a quest. Maybe make it a repeating quest of a couple books or drops items or recipe and those joining in 2016 or beyond get double potions?
Daphne wrote: "Rylie wrote: "Hi all,So I have a question. You have common monsters, that respawn every week. And then, you have the timed monsters, like the drop bear, that reappear on Sunday. So, what's the di..."
I like that as well. :) Any way to make 2016 players feel like they're not being left behind. But, that's why I really like the 2015 thing. There are so many books I read in that year that would help, but I just can't use them. I wouldn't want to use all of them because I'd feel like I was cheating some how, but any way to use a few of those books would be awesome.
Also, a double experience potion, or doubling something or any other way to make it so that a 2016 player could be proud of being one. Every game needs new people. :)
Rylie wrote: "Hi all,So I have a question. You have common monsters, that respawn every week. And then, you have the timed monsters, like the drop bear, that reappear on Sunday. So, what's the difference? It s..."
The rat, bat goblin, greater sewer rat and logophilic lemur can be attacked any day of the week then disappear for a whole week. So if you attack today 18/2/2016 you cannot attack them again until 25/2/16 or any day thereafter.
With 2 exceptions:
If you want to sacrifice a book, you can attack again earlier than 1 week.
If you purchase and wear a "Blending In Hat" during your attack, you can attack every 6 days. This prevents you from wearing any other hat. (ie the Hat Hat or Wizard Hat)
The Drop bear can only be attacked every Sunday. The Merely Kat can only be attacked 1/ month.
Reva wrote: "Rylie wrote: "Hi all,So I have a question. You have common monsters, that respawn every week. And then, you have the timed monsters, like the drop bear, that reappear on Sunday. So, what's the di..."
Aha! The attacked every Sunday, or first of the month clears everything up. Thanks. :)
I think the newcomers got a raw deal. If someone joined December 31/2015, they got to use any of their 2015 books. If they joined after January 1, 2016 they got bubkas. We talked about Welcome Wagon baskets for Newcomers but nothing was ever done about it.
Any thoughts on giving the Newbies a leg up?
I agree with you all in terms of newcomers. I think anything we can do to encourage newbies to try this quest and give them something for missing out on a year of books!
Reva wrote: "We talked about a Welcome Wagon baskets for Newcomers but nothing was ever done about it. Any thoughts on giving the Newbies a leg up?

They do get the advantage of being able to choose from some of the later quests that have better experience or item ratios.
I think maybe I'll do something for March.

Exactly. I was pretty bummed I joined 2 months too late. I couldn't imagine joining a day late. It hasn't dampened my spirits or chased me away or anything, but it would be nice for the 2016-ers to have something. :)

Maybe us heavy players could make a gift basket or something. Like a couple Mouse Meatballs and Drop Bear Steaks. :)
Kelly wrote: "Reva wrote: "We talked about a Welcome Wagon baskets for Newcomers but nothing was ever done about it. Any thoughts on giving the Newbies a leg up?

Small consolation.
Giving them credit for 25 or more 2015 books, extra time walking potions to open up expired quests etc a few minor heal potions and some gold would be a nice gesture and it's to all our benefit to attract more members to the group. (BTW, in the next newsletter use pictures to grab possible newcomers' attention. )
It might be a good idea to resurrect The Academy Quest or at least encourage members to present something in the Theatre. Those were fun presentations.
Oh, wow! I love the discussion on newcomers. I joined Jan 3 and I remember being super bummed I hadn't found the challenge just a few days earlier. Not that I'm going anywhere - this is the awesomest challenge I've seen yet! But I sure could have used some of my books from last year to make a dent in my progress. As it is, it will be a very long time before I ever end up with any books in reserve - everything I read is earmarked to help with one quest or another. I don't mind, but reading for pure pleasure is suffering because I'm more focused on trying to progress by finishing quests or upgrading weapons than on enjoying my reading.I hope that made sense. I'm half asleep today!
I know the only reason I've gotten this far is the volume I usually read on a yearly basis and the fact that I keep reading what I want to read and what I'm in the mood for and slotting things as I'm able to do so. ;) Keeps it from being "work" or lessening my enjoyment. If there's a cover item I just look in books that I have on hand or my wishlists at the libraries I use for kindle/audio and then my TBR. It took me longer to get certain things, but it's all stayed really fun.
As for the newbies, when it started last year I wanted to use all my 2014 books so bad. lol.

The merely Kats can be attacked once per month, not just on the first of the month. In fact, to take advantage of my potions and mercenaries, I attacked Kat #1 on 31/1/2016 and Kat #2, on 1/2/2016. -- before I saw the posting for the twins. GRRR Won't make that mistake again.

Have to hog heal potions like crazy and boost my attack power enough to take down the hydra. Merely cats have to wait.
As for reading I have on and off weeks. Depends on my work load. I read a lot at work - legal documents, laws, contracts. There are days I get home in the evening and don't feel like reading anything.
Teresa wrote: "I feel like I'm moving so slowly... Everything is taking so much time and I have so many partially completed quests. I'm just not sure where to focus my books on. "I know, Teresa. So many quests to choose from. It's crazy!
I made a list of quests I really need to complete and items I really need to get. I try to work on the older ones first, cause I think that the time when Kelly re-starts to expire quests is near.

Yeah, I'm all for that. A "Welcome to the game" basket would be nice.

I agree about the essentially oily. I was all set to turn it in, but was thinking that for the 11 books I used it wasn't worth it to be for just 2 potions.

Both the dog and China Dolls qualify. -- any smile with teeth showing would work.
For Alchemy That!: 2-4/ Each eye of newt (total of 3) may be found in a book with an O anywhere in the title.Does it need to be only one "O" in the title or is more than one o.k.?
e.g. Would Everything I Never Told You count eventhough there are 2 O's?

100pages and not single book on my tbr. :)
